Rewatch, Day 8
- Odd little freeze-frame to show Amethyst's cannonball form. Seems like something they only realized was necessary during animation.
- Why in the world is only Garnet allowed in the burning room?
- Why is Pearl so afraid of Garnet finding out the shards were loose? Steven was playing with them in "Frybo", and Pearl only cared that they be kept away from clothes.
- I'm realizing my claim the show barely ever had text on-screen was pretty off-the mark—there's more in this episode, and as recently as "Lars of the Stars". It was really just the two time cards that stood out.
- Panic never stopped Amethyst from shapeshifting after this, but then she barely ever shapeshifts in combat.
- Steven seems to really be discovering the concept of dishonesty.
- I like these moments of Fryman and Steven. "Steven, are you in a gang?" sounds like such a Greg line.
- What was Sadie already on edge over at the beginning? Long shift? Missed sleep?
- Sadie came up her plan to hide the Warp Pad literally the moment she arrived.
- Lars plugs up his ear to listen to the phone better, but it looks more like
◊ he's sticking his finger in his earring hole.
- It's quite disturbing how close Sadie came to suddenly being pulled into the water and drowned/eaten by a fish.
- There were some edits debating whether those lines on Sadie's leg are more scratches or hairs. Looking on a big screen, I'm almost sure they're hairs because the scratches are all reddish and much thicker.
- Sadie and Lars making out clearly had to be framed with both of them sitting down to bypass the enormous height difference.
- Between the spooning and make-out session, this easily remains the show's steamiest episode. Ruby and Sapphre's Anywhere but Their Lips thing before "Reunited" wouldn't have been nearly so noticeable if that one scene didn't make such a contrast.
- I love moments, like after Sadie and Lars kiss, where it seems we're outside Steven's perspective, but he was actually watching all along.
- Surprised the wording "so you could come on to me!" made it into the episode.
- Besides sticking everyone on the island, Sadie also pushed Lars into that pit. It's sort of surprising saving Lars once made it up to him, considering she endangered him twice.
- This episode had a lot of the Molisee/Villeco team's best boarding.
- It's still weird to notice Ronaldo and Peedee both have distinguishing instruments/music, but Lars didn't until "I Am My Mom", and Sadie still doesn't.
- One of the articles Ronaldo collected says "Fry Codone", and is likely about Frybo. It's almost certain a typo (and not the only one on the board), but what in the world was it meant to say?
- Ronaldo also links the "Ocean drain" to Snake People. Did he think Garnet lied/was wrong about Lapis doing it, or that Lapis was connected to the Snake People?
- Adjacent symbols include the diamond, pyramid, and turkey (which Franklin did not suggest as national animal, though someone may have).
- The "SNK-00" tank and fighter jet in Ronaldo/Steven's Imagine Spot are the only human military vehicles I can recall seeing.
- Considering the gems' negligence in the last episode, Steven specifically saying "I'll be back in an hour" after mentioning Ronaldo is real convenient.
- Peedee covering his face with his apron is adorable.
- Amethyst's foot just comes right out of the corner of the screen.
- In this episode, Ronaldo is more durable than Steven, the kid who survived this
◊.
- Glad to hear McGlynn's Shatner impersonation.
- Connie slips the glasses on even when talking to her mom on the phone.
- There's a real rimshot-style drum beat for Steven and Connie reacting to Garnet on the phone.
- The cheese balls and bag of chip have the same brand.
- I love Amethyst's "can moms be gross"-up. Seems like Villeco's the only one who does weird closeup nowadays.
- Steven has a real lopsided estimate of mom-itudes: "You never talk.", "You're disgusting.", "You're amazing, but would have to come up with some excuse not to eat."
- That's a very nice restaurant with exactly one outdoor table. That's either very fortuitous, or Greg/Steven/etc. booked.
- Steven says his "mom" picks apples. I would have said "pest control".
- Odd that none of the parents introduce themselves by their first name.
- There's a waiter for exactly one scene. Sort of like the ones in "Mr. Greg", but bald.
- Garnet bonking Pearl and Amethyst on the head with her gauntlets is rather excessive.
- Curious if the parents did any talking offscreen when Connie ran off.
- The bus must have been reading the script, 'cause it showed up five seconds after Steven and Connie decided to take one (and were already at the bus stop).
- Even assuming Steven and Connie are the only passengers, you gotta feel for whoever is driving. (Kind of hypocritical to lecture Steven on endangering himself in traffic; pulling a moving bus off the road is absurdly dangerous.)
- Connie's punishment isn't mentioned on-screen, presumably because Priyanka and Doug preferred to talk about that at home.
- Forgot that while Doug pushed Steven and Connie apart, Priyanka was about to do it herself.
We were talking about Goku's height growth over in the Dragon Ball thread, and Randomness linked this image
of Kid Goku in the 21st Tenkaichu Budokai vs him at the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai later on, and the difference reminded me a lot of Steven's redesign in the new movie, especially the "Steven has a neck" joke.
I wonder if it's a reference to or took inspiration from this shot in Dragon Ball. Wouldn't surprise me, a lot of Steven Universe directly references Dragon Ball.
Here's a one hour interview with Rebecca
, and Tumblr post summarizing a lot of it
.
![]()
With Goku, it's as much the art style changing as the character growing. Later illustration of Goku have the more obvious neck, even when he was still twelve (or a baby).
Rewatch, Day 9
- Whereas the various Pearls sound like the same voice speaking differently, Magno-Hall uses a more different voice for Hopper.
- Completely forgot the MacGuffin in Steven's story is based on the gem Garnet brought home in a bubble.
- Garnet looks good in a tank top.
- That poor hill!
- Like how Ringo putting the gem in his hair sounds like a gun cocking.
- Losing her hair makes Garnet look like a LEGO minifig.
- Eating a treasured photograph is a pretty good evil move.
- Garnet at the end turns Steven's shade of pink, I guess because Steven was inspiring her.
- As Zach Callison pointed out in an interview, Steven's narrates the ending in his natural voice. I have no idea why that would happen, even by accident.
- I sort of wish they'd do another format break like this where the whole story is made up and animated in a different style. The closest we got were "The Answer" and "Your Mother and Mine", which had even more aggressive style changes, but they didn't last most of the episode.
- Is "I'm Amadeus" a specific reference, or just a random name?
- Greg hurts his back just by leaning down while standing. He's able to play tennis by "Letters to Lars", though.
- Steven pulls a real Seed Death Blossom.
- A crown, for a kid whose name means "crown"
- Baby Melon being able to stand up on its own should have tipped Steven off they could move.
- Steven's voice goes to Callison's natural voice for a little bit during the boardwalk scene.
- This episode and "Sadie's Song" as the only times Sadie wears a dress.
- POV Break: We see Ronaldo's "dissection" through a livestreaming screen even though Steven was there in person.
- Again, the Crystal Gems are big fans of murder. The melons only hurt one guy, not badly, and Steven already got them away to the edge of town.
- Abrams and Jo are probably the storyboard artists who've gotten the most complaints, but this shot alone
◊ is enough for me to love them forever.
- That wasn't just a punch Baby Melon threw, it's practically
◊ a Galactica Phantom.
- Steven tells the melons "Don't come back until you understand what [Baby Melon] did for me, for all of us!" I wonder if the ones on the island will ever try to come back, if only for a pilgrimage.
- If I tasted as good as a watermelon, I'd be OK if they served me at my funeral.
- The ending for this episode has some real nice drumming
.
- Lion just gets to hang out inside the Big Donut.
- Blobfish Sadie
◊
- Sadie just let her bag lunches pile up in the store fridge for months. That has got to be a health code violation.
- The question that gets Lion to get Steven to the video is "I wonder what kind of lunch my mom would've made me." Rose almost certainly ate, but did she ever learn to cook?
- Like a true cat, Lion steals your seat/bed.
- People being unable to breathe in Lion's mane is still the most arbitrary thing to me, especially once Bismuth talks in there anyway.
- Did Lion really not understand he was suffocating Steven? Pearl's creepy staring was necessary to save Steven's life.
- Dogcopter sounds so manly.
- How did the sword get back in Lion's mane and on the island if Steven hadn't been there before?
- Sadie has to have gotten really confused by some of what Rose said about becoming Steven.
- When Steven came to the Big Donut, Sadie said donuts would be ready in an hour. When the video was over, Lars said they had to open up. That makes me think the "For Steven" video lasts a lot longer in-universe than it does onscreen.
- The board artist insisted on this episode coming before "Story for Steven". That was definitely the right move—it makes way more sense to hold off a flashback with Rose until Steven had heard her voice.
- Does Pearl know what an "antecubital fauca" is from reading up on human biology, or because gems constructs also have that body part and that same specific term for it?
- I hope to see the dimension the Warp Pads take you through again. It'd be a crazy place to fight in.
- Macaroni cheese seems too mild for Amethyst to eat.
- That's kind of mean to take away Steven's cookies for something he did accidentally when waking up.
- Machines like the robonoid can be made to activate gem tech. Makes me wonder if the Off Colors rigged up something so Lars could actually work things.
- It's crazy that this is already the second episode with a whole act devoted to revisiting the events of previous episodes.
- "These are the warps that once connected us to other planets. If something tried to come from space, it would be through here." Excepting the giant eyeball that came out of the sky less than a year ago.
- The Robonoid "attacks" Steve by spraying the goop on him. That seems very wasteful.
- Nice touch that Garnet stops a tear under her glasses before we actually see it.
- Even assuming the repair gel only works on Warp Pads, the Crystal Gems really should have used what Peridot left lying around to fix the broken ones on Mask Island and the Communication Hub.
- Rabara's Peridot voice is quite different in her first appearance. It's lower and less nasal, even compared to moments later on where Peridot is speaking calmly.
- Why were Pearl and Amethyst raising their hands?

Lion probably has to let air into his mane...the tree leaves would just be more fur even if they don't look like it.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I can't imagine they're going to be problems that are going to be seriously addressed. At most, I could see Lars finding out about Lion living for so long and he and Sadie have a conversation about the future. I don't think Steven Universe is going to go on long enough for Lars' aging to ever directly impact his and Sadie's relationship.
Note to the public: I appreciate all vigilance in keeping the recap pages clear of spoilers from later episodes, to counteract the constant stream of hoosiers who can't take a hint.
Rewatch, Day 10
- Steven and Amethyst laughing together as they dance, despite Pearl thinking they're doing it wrong, is a pretty good sign that Steven would fuse with Amethyst first.
- "We Need to Talk" puts Pearl's skepticism that Steven's organic body can fuse in a new light.
- Connie and Steven's dancing is good in that it's completely amateur, but not in a comically-terrible way.
- That green "shirt" kind of clashes with the rest of Stevonnie's colors. I get why it's usually just Connie's jacket that goes over Steven's clothes later.
- Many of us chuckled at "Or at the very least inappropriate.", thinking that's Pearl being a prude, completely missing that it's actually her being racist.
- Garnet may as well have told Stevonnie "Let the legend come back to life!"
- Kevin's voice is much more hushed than later on—which is odd considering he was on a loud dance floor.
- Putting his general... personage... aside, Kevin is a pretty good dancer
- It's really made clear that Kevin is disrespecting Stevonnie's space, even if he never actually touches them—ironically, Stevonnie grabs him (by the hand to get on an open part of the floor).
- Connie sounds kind of unhinged. If if weren't for the glow sticks, that ending could come off a sort of disturbing (even the music is ambivalent).
- "Non-Invasive Operation" is the clear winner with all those board game names.
- They avoided calling the "moon goddess statue" by the name, though that name is back when it appears in "Buddy's Book". (How did he know that?)
- That's a pretty hard shift Steven makes from feeling like a failure to excitedly insisting on a new test.
- For the second time, a star iris is used as a wipe instead of a scene transition.
- Did they make the danger rooms physically, or can they control the whole temple like Sardonyx controls her room?
- The test being impossible to lose should not have upset Steven as much as if they were genuinely dangerous. In particular, if he landed on the invisible floor, he should have gotten the message "You failed the test, but I'm not letting you get hurt over it."
- Since the POV is fixed on Steven, the writers clearly know that eavesdropping is an excellent writing tool.
- That was an unusually good lie from Steven, but it probably helps that he just describes the traps. "This was just what I needed."
- Garnet could have taken that ball off the stairs instead of catching Steven when he tripped on it. Did she not so he would learn to pick up him, or to take the opportunity to show off?
- In this stretch of episodes, Callison seems to have some trouble controlling the volume of his voice while still sounding like Steven.
- Garnet phrases her Future Vision as being some kind of super-analysis power, but she sometimes clearly make prediction about things that she will not see until later, or even distant things she never ends up seeing physically.
- In that one reality where Lars gives Steven a high five, I expect it to either be sarcastic or a lead-in to a prank.
- Garnet sprays that hot coffee all over the restaurant to get it off herself.
- Falling in a manhole is unlikely to kill Steven .
- I love when the regular cast members voice ridiculous imaginary characters, like Moy voicing the wasps.
- Steven wore the bike helmet more than once. It's a little less random that the video games keep making it an item.
- A point of contrast I make between Garnet and Nicole Watterson is that, while Garnet tells kids to stay off the roof in a lightning storm, Nicole hands them a golf club and says "go at it".
- "Steven, we are not like the No Home Boys. We are literally standing in your home right now." I'm a sucker for jokes that are "[x] is not true. We are literally surrounded by [opposite of x]".
- I listen to a podcast who define Amethyst's character by the line "Sometimes your big sister has to let you get attacked by a raccoon."
- Steven is right about hay being terrible bedding. I'd rather sleep on the (anachronistic?) wood paneling.
- The Kindergarten is so conveniently located, I can't tell if it was where Amethyst intended to go the entire time.
- Steven has no idea what the Injectors or emergence holes are, but assumed gems were all "made" in space, not "born" there. What did he know or imagine before that point? Greg gave him The Talk sometime that may have been before this. Maybe he or Pearl at least mentioned that gems didn't reproduce sexually.
What about the one time when Stevonnie only had Stephen's clothes? That was pretty weird.
The gems could've easily made less challenging tests...but it should've been less about the danger and more about being actually able to complete them.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Rewatch, Day 11
- Lars really is even worse to Ronaldo than he ever was to Steven.
- "You're... eating... my... leg..." sounds exactly like Jones-Quartey's voice as Radicles.
- "Skeptic of mortality" is a great way to describe believing in ghosts.
- Lars and Ronaldo remain the only characters with a different voice actor portraying them at another age.
- Looking at young Lars' big hair
◊, I have to wonder what present Lars would look like if he didn't shave the sides of his head.
- That picture
◊ is Ed Edd N' Eddy as hell. But did Molisee draw it?
- Ronaldo was actually interested in that gemstone as Steven sent it away. The true genesis of "Rising Tides, Crashing Skies"?
- It's bizarre how everyone but the main four actors are always "additional voices" even when there's only one "featured voices".
- Steven, you have a phone, you can just show Connie a video in the van.
- Connie and Steven are very close if they understand slowly shoving a snowball in someone's face as a playful act.
- Lion isn't just absent in this episode, but every one set in fall or winter. Coincidence* , or does he dislike cold weather?
- Greg has a star shirt in his van, as they probably already had an idea where Steven's shirts come from.
- The screaming behind the windshield is the show reaching .gif
- Why didn't Doug call until he was almost in Beach City?
- Think we'll ever learn the name or approximate location of the town the Maheswarans live in?
- "I don't have anything!" is one of my favorite Crispin Freeman line reads.
- The first time I saw Connie just trusting Steven, even when he made himself sound like a total lunatic, I thought "Dear God, they are the best."
- Love the implication that Doug was holding his ear up to Connie's call with Priyanka.
- Dear God, using the Shooting Star that way was a horrible idea on so many level. Ironically, though, I'm thinking of a few occasions later on where they maybe should have considered using it.
- "Entire inch of snow" is likely meant to says Beach City doesn't get snow often (regardless of whatever it's like on the real Rehoboth Bay).
- Does Greg ever get star eyes again?
- Greg, you should really remember "one thousand years"—several different people mentioned that part.
- I wonder if Space Dog is meant to be a Pug Davis reference.
- Lesson: Don't watch TV in a room with no windows at all.
- Did Greg really spent over 24 hours straight without sleeping, drinking, or eating anything but a bag of fries?
- Pearl in a sweater is still adorable.
- More eavesdropping!
- Amethyst takes Greg's form, but still has a full head of hair.
- I wonder if we'll ever see the Greg pile in Amethyst's room.
- So does Greg just have an empty storage locker from this point on, or does he sell/stop renting it?
- Is the "crack" sound the Robonoids make supposed to be them exiting warp?
- Pearl's worry about the repair goop is all Amethyst needs to spread it all over everyone. I've long wondered if any gem technology is toxic to humans.
- How in the world could you see it was heading to Mask Island from the Temple?
- Again, Future Vision is allowing people to see arbitrary things across the entire world.
- Why would a Robonoid possibly need to go to the Kindergarten by Warp Pad, instead of landing there directly?
- Although switching them wouldn't make sense, Connie's mind breaking at Steven's out-of-order reading is a way higher escalation than collapsing when he doesn't get what a familiar is.
- I think this is my favorite B-plot, even though it's almost completely detached from the main.
- The writers seem to like finding ways to reuse sets. Not that I'm complaining when they're this nice.
- Kind of odd that Pink Diamond didn't know (and couldn't find out about) the secret floor of the Kindergarten.
- The Crystal Gems also didn't bother to look around the basement after Peridot's console was destroyed.
- Already a mention of the "prime kindergarten" more than two seasons before that became relevant. We never learned if Pearl or Garnet knew there was a second.
- This is my first time assessing "the records say that Gems were wiped out on Earth" since we found out the full truth of that situation.
- Expanding star to black!
- Hindsight: Not only did Steven give away the Crystal Gems' survival, most of the new information they got (like Peridot sending the Red Eye or Homeworld assuming they were dead) wasn't very useful or was misinterpreted—they were totally wrong about resuming gem production, and may have learned her real mission if Steven waited longer. All of that on top of giving away the list of humans. Mission summary: massive failure.
I know why, but even in a vision...why would they use the Shooting Star in the house and not the other place?
Did you do Rose's Room already?
I can't see.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Rewatch, Day 12
- Keeping "Lion 4" in mind, I think Rose may have kept Lion a "secret" from Pearl in that she just didn't think he was worth mentioning.
- Conversely, I've no idea why Rose would have shown Lion where her armory was located.
- Nor how Lion would know Pearl was taking the sword and scabbard to where she swore to fight with Rose. Is Lion secretly a super-observant Warrior Therapist, did Rose constantly talk to/around him about all her friends, or does he just an innate sense for where Rose's crap is?
- This is another episode that seems shorter on rewatching—most of is fast-paced to make room for the climax and montage. Which just makes it more impressive.
- The last book Steven was reading had already came out back in "Marble Madness". I'm surprise Connie was still interested enough to recommend it.
- Dammit Connie, waiting around in front of someone finishing a book then jumping on them for their thoughts is like the worst thing to do to a friend you introduced to it.
- As absurdly indulgent as the book's ending sounds, Connie's kind of got her head up her ass. She's so stuck on the idea of the protagonists as cultural rebels (which is blatant wish fulfillment on her part), she seems to dislike them having any lives outside of that.
- The overalls really make Connie look taller
◊. Which is to say... more realistic?
- If Steven could order the Room to ignore his orders, he could have probably just told it to defer to Connie's orders.
- I misread "Sew & Sew - Tailor" as "Sew-Sew Tailor".
- Lisa lost an iron sword? Maybe because it went obsolete about seven thousand years ago.
- It's very Steven that his best idea to substitute a wedding is becoming caterers.
- Cloud Connie knew which book that creature was from. Either it was bluffing (and repeating Connie's previous mention of "book four"), or that—even more than it knowing how Steven felt about the ending—is proof the room can outright read Steven's mind.
- Steven learns the sadness of a one-sided improv session.
- Whatever consciousness the room has, you can tell that when Cloud Connie became its unrestrained avatar, it was thinking "Finally, now I can just teach Steven a lesson without pretending to do what he asks."
- "We only serve donuts." isn't true at all. Even discounting beverages, you can see in that scene they still have Lion Lickers. Back in "Lion 3", they also served hot dogs (with donuts or peanuts) and pretzels.
- "I don't understand it myself, but a boy's gotta have interests and ambitions." —Bill, being a good dad (at the moment)
- "Peace in the Middle East, Holmes" Well, I guess their Earth isn't so different...
- POV Break: Steven clearly couldn't hear Lars' initial muttering about the T-shirt.
- Taking a picture of Greg, and then walking away laughing, is ruder than I'd expect from Sour Cream.
- Pearl's hypno-vision is easily the craziest eyes have been drawn.
- Even the Crystal Gems themselves know they are good only at murder. (I mean until Garnet gives good advice anyway.)
- Got to love how the bodyguards both run away by going across Dewey's path.
- This episode has a lot of visual gags, which I like, but don't have much to comment on. What I will say is the best one is UG's ear just falling off.
- Pearl eyes do that same thing again.
- Amethyst turns to look at the "Y" before shouting "Why?!"
- The RV gives Steven a different color scheme.
- Amethyst's first instinct was to eat Pizza Steven. Now I'm wondering if she's ever eaten any animals alive.
- Lion's howl of sorrow is probably the most expressive he's ever been.
- POV Break: Because it's not canon, the show freely breaks from Steven's perspective to show the Crystal Gems in another dimension, as well as Uncle Granpda's list.
Speaking of Rose's Room, I've realized the "Other Threats" character page should just be "Other"—many of them (the Watermelon Stevens, Rose's Room) stick around long past being threats. I doubt I'll get any objection, but changing the index in all the other pages takes a while.
re: Lars' aging and how long he'll take to notice... I think how long it takes will be directly related to just how far along he was in puberty. 13-year old me would have noticed faster than 16-year old me (and both would have caught on way faster than 20-year old me), but that's because the bulk of puberty's major changes hit me then. If Lars was already set to be more of a late bloomer, I bet he'd notice pretty fast things like "my voice still isn't getting any deeper" or "body hair, when does that happen?"
Part of it also depends on just what his family's like - for example, the body hair thing might be moot if one or both sides of his family are just not very hairy.
As more of an odd question... I wonder what would happen if Steven used his tears to revive someone who was bald, like Mr. Smiley. I mean, I'm sure he'd still be revived, but would he still have a portal in his head? Would it be on his pate or in his mustache?
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.![]()
![]()
I completely support that move. I was actually wondering why it was "other threats" and not just "other" a while ago.
![]()
Don't really follow that scene, but this one is pretty great if you're into AUs.
Janky Bones
is also great (if really angst-filled).

Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢With Rose keeping Lion a secret from even Pearl (the same Pearl who knew she was Pink Diamond and conditioned not to tell) I think she felt Lion's existence would raise an uncomfortable questions that would effect Pearl since the answer is obvious to Pearl and she can't answer.
That she was able to keep Lion a secret for so long does stretch things slightly,it's a little contrived that Lion didn't once show up to other crystal Gems while Rose was with them, unless she had a way of keeping Lion from coming anywhere near her while she was with company
have a listen and have a link to my discord server"So why is Lion pink?"
"Well...I brought him back to life with my tears!"
"You can resurrect things with your tears now?"
"Yes"
"Have you always been able to do that?"
"..Maybe.."
"Hmmm, that's surprising, thats something I wouldn't expect a Gem to do unless they were a Diamond or something"
-sweat drop-
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverBut seriously, there probably just wouldn't be a portal, the same if Lion lost all his (mane) hair. I wondered myself if Lars and Steven having some kind of falling out it would lead to Lars shaving his head to cut off the portal.
I moved the page, made the old one a redirect, and changed the link on the character index. I'll change the other links later, but anyone else is free to do it themselves.
Technically new information, but seriously, does Hearty seem like she wants anything else?

Nearly two years, actually, so it totally makes sense that they wouldn't remember her.
