DBZ is too light heart...

Honestly, every time I heard about the show online I thought it sounded dumb. That didn't change until a few years ago when a friend of mine recommended it. I'm really glad I gave it a chance.
Regardless of your opinion of the last American election, we can all agree on one thing- The Chinese Communist Party can choke on scrotes!Myself, the early episodes (in particular, "Frybo" and "Hamburger Backpack") turned me off (and I still find large chunks of the first season downright difficult to watch - I don't think I full-on enjoyed an entire episode prior to "Mirror Gem"), but I came back to it when the whole drama with "Alone At Sea" happened, because I just had to know what caused such a blowup (and as it turned out, I loved that ep). I had to play catch-up to get much of the series.
This show has definitely gotten better with age.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.I remember when I first saw ads for Steven Universe and what I presumed the show would be like:
Pearl: "I am a human woman selected by destiny to wield the power of the Cosmic Pearl and save the Earth from evil. Together with the wielder of the Cosmic Amethyst and the wielder of the Cosmic Garnet, we form a group called the Crystal Gems. Our lives were turned upside-down the day the Cosmic Quartz chose Steven to wield it. Never before has a male been selected by a gem, and Steven has a lot to learn, but I think one day he'll make us proud."
I'll admit, I cheated a little with that post. I knew there were three Crystal gems, but I didn't know their names, and I didn't know what kind of gem Steven had, though I did know it was in his bellybutton.
I remember seeing a few episodes here and there, but I wasn't fully onboard until I saw "Space Race." After watching that I knew I had to see every episode.

More likely they didn't know about it—it was assumed destroyed, a secret/surprise that it ever worked, etc.
I watched a couple early episodes but wasn't hooked until I stumble across Garnet singing Stronger Than You on Youtube while looking for a rock song that had "stronger than you" in its lyrics. Based on that, I decided to go back and rewatch the whole series.
Hilariously enough, that Youtube video actually started with Garnet having already refused, so I wasn't even spoiled on the Ruby/Sapphire twist, I just didn't really think about the lyrics too hard.

I saw "Coach Steven" and "The Test" (both of which I really liked), and they got me curious about this show enough to follow the trope pages. Then I heard about the big Garnet twist and how it coincided with the Stan's twin twist in Gravity Falls. So while that was on break my friends caught up with SU.
