I never thought about the Fleischer cartoons for White Pearl - she reminded me a lot of Metropolis as well. That's probably because, again, her style is very heavily influenced by the 1920's fashion styles that were the rage during the height of Art Deco (about all that was missing was the cloche hat), and said styles were prominently featured in said movie.
Kinda has me up for a rewatch of Metropolis to prepare and see if any themes from that movie will end up being mirrored further in SU.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.Rebecca Sugar was recently on Talking Simpsons, along with Ian Jones-Quartey and Toby Jones (who were there a second time), discussing "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show".
It's a very long (~3 hour) episode, with a lot of talk about how the episode's depiction of cartoon creation relates to and informed their own experiences. Sugar particularly finds herself constantly thinking back to "magic xylophone"/"genius at work" and "everyone should be asking 'where's poochie?'" As far as talking directly about Steven Universe:
- While doing a recording, Erica Lutrell (Sapphire) gave Charlyne Yi (Ruby) some advice on how to breath to make a laugh sound better, which caused Sugar to think "Did Sapphire just teach Ruby how to laugh?"
- They tried to have Steven's pilot design cameo in "Steven and the Stevens", but that turned out to be much harder than expected, and it ended being almost impossible to distinguish from the others.
- Ian Jones-Quartey noted that cartoon version of him was used as an extra a lot more after he left. In particular, Lamar Abrams boarded one shot of a crowd with a giant arrow labelled "Ian".
- The one scene the whole roomed disliked was Bart arguing with Comic Book Guy, which they found petty on the writers' part—telling your audience they owe you is not a mentality they endorse. Someone pointed out Lars and Steven's conversations in "Tiger Philanthropist" were similar, but Sugar and/or Jones replied that Steven just wanted to give Lars what he wanted, and Lars just didn't know. (Personally, I think that's glossing over how bitingly entitled Lars acted the first time they were talking.)
- In his other appearance on the podcast, Jones-Quartey confirmed that Cookie Cat was based on Cookie Puss (in particular, the idea of an ice cream cake have backstory).
Watched the whole thing. It's a pretty even-handed video about how Cartoon Network isn't doing a good job of scheduling its shows. He starts off by talking about how much he dislikes rant videos since it's much more fun to talk about something you love than talk about something you hate, but there is also a catharsis and he basically needed to vent a bit.
He talks about Steven Universe's airing schedule in detail, and about how month-long hiatuses aren't too bad when there's Stevenbombs followed by weekly episdes in between. He has come to the conclusion that the Summer of Steven basically killed Steven Universe's airing schedule, since it used up 6-7 months worth of episodes on a weekly schedule that were sorely needed in the hiatus between Lar's Head and Dewey Wins. He also says that Cartoon Network's poor and lazy advertising didn't help the show, either.
Hmm, I think I might check that video out. 23 minutes is a biiiit long but I'm also not a fan of how Cartoon Network treats Steven Universe.
When we're done, there won't be anything left.Thinking about it, Homeworld leaving the jungle moon mostly undisturbed has some odd implications. Apparently there are planets that can support organic life but not gem production. Are there any planets that are the opposite? Is this any correlation at all, or is it just a coincidence that some do both?
They can probably colonise any planet and expect to produce Gems, what they probably want is the maximum output from their Kindergartens, with the Jungle Moon they probably abandoned their efforts once it became clear the planet was'nt going to produce Gems in the numbers they needed
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverThis is a thing that happened, truly it's better than life itself.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Sugar mentioned that having a gemstone in a place of an eye might impair a gem's vision but also give some sort of extra sensory ability that makes up for it. That makes me wonder: can the numerous gems without noses (Sapphires, Rutiles, Aquamarines) smell things? Peridot's calling a nose a "scent sponge" does imply most gems has a sense of smell (rather than it being something the Crystal Gems imitated from humans like eating or sleeping), and use their nose to do so.
I mean Topaz can hear even though Lars points out her gemstone should cover her ears, while the Rutile Twins don't seem to have ears at all.

I've always wondered if the placement of the gem on the Hard Light body was a deliberate choice on the part of the Gem, or if it's something they can't control.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI imagine Pink would have moved her Gem location entirely if it was possible. The best she could do was change it's orientation.

The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.

I still really like White Diamond's and her Pearl's art designs. They really act as a contrast with the rest of the characters by bringing to mind older forms of media. White Diamond looks like something straight out of Metropolis, while White Pearl looks like an old black and white Max and Dave Fleischer cartoon.
