Well if you rip that thing out of him, at the very least he'll bleed copiously. Especially now that we know it goes deeper than we thought.

And that's not even getting into the fact that part of what he is is that gem.

So he'll cease to exist in the sense that he'll die

[up] He'd die, yes, but it could end up being a Disney Death if Pink/Rose regenerates as a result due to resurrection tears; that's something that could conceivably happen in the show, even if it would be kind of cheap.

[up][up]Does Steven bleed? I don't think we've ever seen him get hurt like that.

I imagine if you pulled out Steven's gem, half of his biomass would go with it, and he'd collapse into a smaller, lifeless, and misshapen blob of flesh with a giant bleeding hole in the stomach.

They've said before, the gem contains half of what's basically his DNA, I think. Even if he could survive the drama of it being pulled out, he'd basically only have half the DNA of a person or something. Not a pretty thought.

This is what I imagine happening if Steven's gem is removed.

I'm gonna be a rebel and guess that Steven can probably survive the removal, if he gets immediate treatment.

But all his powers would be gone for good, and considering how being a gem is such a big part of his psyche, the physical and mental scars of such trauma would never leave him.

I don't think it'd make sense for Steven to survive. Like... that gem presumably sustains half of his genetic make-up. I don't see how he could logically continue to exist without it. It'd be a borderline plot hole for him to not die without it, unless they came up with a really good explanation.

I'm just going with the headcanon is that removing Steven's Gem is impossible,

Unless this show gets much darker we have basically zero percent chance of seeing it happen, even if he could survive it.

That doesn't make sense though, what we eat becomes our body, not just half of it, I don't know whether steven could survive gem removal, he's not entirely human so maybe it plays the role of keeping it all together, maybe it is what gives him his life energy (does this make sense?) or maybe it replaced what humas use to regulate their body functions (why? because maybe it does the job better) and ripping it off would result in a state similar to brain dead.

I just don't think him (or his body) losing half of everything is the only possible result, but don't quote me on that; tho, if true, that would mean he would give all of his babys the same genes, barring for mutations, or be sterile because none of the genes from his gem side would survive separated from it.

@LSBK: With good use of Gory Discretion Shot / Bloodless Carnage they could pull off a Disney Death for Steven.

Jones-Quartey said... something about this on a recent podcast. I don't remember if he mentioned DNA, but the gist of it was that Steven's body and gem were tied together (besides just being attached to each other).

That doesn't make sense though, what we eat becomes our body, not just half of it
What we eat, yes. Steven has already demonstrated enough Shapeshifter Baggage to revert an infant. And even if Steven's body isn't physically dependent on his gem, at least part of his mind is probably located in his gem.

Yeah, putting a hard line between the "physical" and "mental" ignores that thoughts are created by a physical organ, but fiction in general does that.

I think Matt Burnett answered this on twitter at one point, and said he'd just die.
That was asking if Steven could be poofed and regenerate. He also deleted that post (among others).

Come to think of it, i think Pink Diamond has some power to create organic life and that's how steven came to be.

I mean, Rose and Steven can create plant people. I know it's not the same thing but close enough.

She created Steven in the same way other human beings are created. Her powers came in to play by her shapeshifting the necessary plumbing to facilitate procreation. And holding that form for months. Which makes a lot more sense after we found out she more or less spent thousands of years in a form different from her original one. Diamond shapeshifting is presumably on a whole other level.

In a more recent interview Sugar described Steven as "human cells held together by Gem magic". Given that description turning Steven into a blob seems like the most likely outcome of removing his Gem.
