I actually find the idea that Steven would fuse with Lars (or Greg) unlikely just because the resulting fusion by all rights would just be straight up male, and I get the impression they don't actually want to do that. It goes along with the no "male" gems thing.

But Steven's a male gem. I don't see why a masculine fusion would be a problem. I don't see them being against it just to enforce One-Gender Race.
They should have an exception for that circumstance...

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. Why not, as far we can tell Stevonnie and Smokey Quartz aren't as explicitly female as the other fusions are, because of him.
I don't see why this wouldn't count. I don't necessarily have a problem with it either way, this is just my impression of their reasoning of the matter.
Maybe it will happen.

This goes beyond a specific fusion and more just a general element about the show.
Maybe it wouldn't "count" to them, but seeing how these things have been treated so far I'm not sure why not. Or they could change their mind. I'm just giving my impression off how things currently seem and they're previous statements.

Basically right now the idea of the Gems as an all female race that tilts the gender balance of the primary cast way over to female characters is as much a stylistic choice by Sugar as it is a statement/attempt to work against the idea of "male as default gender" that's dug its way deep into pop culture. That being said, fusions are weird and different. I think that both Smokey Quartz and Stevonnie, despite not really having a gender, are definitely both female-presenting, and that's really important to note.
I don't really think Stars would break that though. Because of how small the pool of Steven-male fusions are (it's basically Lars and Greg, that's it), fusions and gems would still be overwhelmingly female-presenting. It would also imo help break the idea that fusion is just a thinly worded metaphor for sex by showing Steven fuse with a 100% friend and parent respectively (I mean technically Smokey Quartz should have disproved that but I digress).
Yeah a Steven/Lars fusion would be more human than not. I agree that the purpose of the Gems being all-female with the exception of Steven is more about providing a Watsonian justification for combating Western media's tendency for androcentrism. Now that we have established all these female Gems a Steven/Lars fusion wouldn't go against that.
The fusion as sex (or rather always/only as sex) thing never made sense when looking at a lot of the relationships between the fusing characters anyway. That didn't stop people from seeing it that way with all the characters.
I remember someone here mentioning they were creeped out by Smokey Quartz because of that.
The thing is I don't think they've ever spoken of it as a rule or element or whatever. When they've spoken about this it's been about it just being the facts of gems as they are currently. It's doubtful they'd have another person like Steven running around, obviously, but fusions resulting from Steven being a part of it wouldn't be that out there.
Especially since fusions weren't really part of the question when they were talking about it.

Alone Together has a lot of sexual connotations to it. It's part metaphor for puberty, yes, but there are definitely elements of sex in it as well. I mean obviously it isn't straight up a metaphor for sex, because Steven's like 15 (and honestly mentally closer to 12 or 13 with some sufficient degree of mental trauma) and Connie's like 12, but it's there to some degree.
Fusion IS a metaphor for sex, it's just also a metaphor for a lot of things that aren't sex. It's just natural that the embodiment of intimacy between two willing participants as a way to deepen their relationship with each other will have some overlap with irl sexual acts. It's just that we tend to see fusion in romantic contexts due to how things just line up.
BUT MOONSTONE. LET'S TALK ABOUT MOONSTONE.
He was 13 at the time...

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Wondering what Moonstones do. Obvious they have some role in Homeworld's legal system.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.

Also if Steven and Lars fuse I guess their fusion name would probably be "Stars"?
