Maybe they don't need sleep, per se, not like humans do, but do require some form of rest or downtime nonetheless to keep exhaustion at bay?

They only ever seem to get tired when it's funny. The only other time it happened was to Amethyst and Garnet when Sugilite was poofed.

There's no "maybe", that's explicitly how it works.

The Crystal Gems were all tired in "Chille Tid" from searching the ocean, but Steven was the only one who actually needed to sleep. The rest could have recovered by just going some time without exerting themselves, but they tried sleeping on Steven's suggestion.

The only other time it happened was to Amethyst and Garnet when Sugilite was poofed.
They were "tired" then in the sense of "sore from having their asses kicked"—it's the same reason Lapis and Jasper were unconscious when Malachite forcibly defused.

I know. But it seemed like they were using that thematically to end it on a joke about being sore from exercising too much that episode. I forgot about it happening with Malachite though.

Hmm... that is a possibility, given that gems presumably need some source of energy and recovery. After all, if it were limitless, gem battles would be eternal until someone was shattered. That said, if sleep (as opposed to general rest or downtime) is truly optional, I kinda wonder why Pearl engages in it - she generally disdains doing things that humans do.

I don't think Pearl hates doing everything humans do. Just eating and wearing clothes because she doesn't like how they feel, and in the former case, because what comes out is disgusting.

It seems more a matter of physical strain than energy consumption. The gemstones are a constant, apparently inexhaustible energy supply.

I think the only time Pearl's actually ever slept was "Chille Tid".
Where Steven had to explain how to do it.

While Jasper and Lazuli were passed out after defusing, the CG were also noticeably exhausted...Amethyst being face down.

Since then gems' bodies are basically solid holograms, would suck exertion be mental or physical?

@48905 It's a lot easier to explain why Amethyst mimics human behavior - in general, she enjoys doing it. Presumably, that includes sleep.

For actual energy accumulation... honestly, I always suspected that they were effectively solar-powered or run off of some other ambient, easily gathered energy source. They have a finite amount and would need to recharge, but if nothing is interfering with them, able to keep going more or less indefinitely.

I think as solid holograms their energy source is mixture of solar and light or another kind of matter humans can't identify (magic!)

I like to think that gems are also able to fuel themselves with ambient heat. Which admittedly would make no sense under the laws of thermodynamics, so that would require enough handwaves that you might as well just say "magic."

I bet there's a point where Gems could die a natural death. It's just that they're so long-lived it's rare for them to get there because they either die in combat or get shattered / bubbled for insubordination first.

Gems could theoretically survive until the heat death of the universe, although by that time they've probably already hopped to another universe

My headcanon is that Gem's power source is all the energy they absorbed while growing in the ground for decades, and that humongous amount of energy lasts them throughout their natural lifespan of tens of thousands of years.

I'd hate to ask, but since I'm new to this fandom:

What's the "infamous fan fic" of Steven Universe? You know, like how every series has an infamous fanfic that is known for being awful or affects how people view the characters?

Not really. Most "infamous" fanfics are troll fics, and people who talk about them tend to overestimate how many people have heard of them.

Yeah, fanfic's haven't really taken off in negative ways. They're either trollfics not too many people care for or have read, or some modest story-driven stuff that get small followings.
