@Alderic and Karkat, it helps that the Gems are confirmed shapeshifters.

Excuse you, the Island miniseries was good for worldbuilding. I quite liked it.

Also, guess we won't be getting a 'save the Zoomans' plot any time soon.

So there's no confusion, I meant the TTGO Island Adventure filth. That's what I saw recorded instead of Room for Ruby.

Anyways, this episode has been probably one of the best ones in a while. When was the last time since the Out of this World bomb that we had something this good?

I thought it was alright, though I'll confess I was somewhat spoiled by some leaked stuff.

I'm more interested in what will come from this...

@Adric De Psycho: What ideology would that be? Could you explain it to me?

@47723: ... Cartoon Network US using Brazilian memes? What is this thievery!?

That aside, I... think Cartoon Network Brazil is very memetic. Or at least it tries to, I don't pay much attention to its social media. I know Regular Show has a gaming channel, and they frequently post images with captions on their Facebook page, emulating memes but not necessarily using them.

Holy crap this episode. Season 4 redeemed.

I'm half expecting Leggy to show up and try to bite Amethyst's face off with the way these Rubies are going. Not just wanting her ship back, but going out of her way to deliberately hurt Steven for no reason other than shits and giggles. She's almost as messed as Eyeball. Up until the last second I was convinced she was just gonna be innocently doing wrong stuff but she's just a stone cold mofo.

Now this is how Lapis should be rather than that crap in New Crystal Gems. The bitterness and anger in seeing other people be happy and wondering why you're so broken that you can't do it is so real to me. That crazy laugh at the end where she's proven correct; that she's right to be broken and Navy is just as broken as her, speaks volumes. Probably the best Lapis has been since Alone At Sea.

More excuses for Lesbian Farmers Peridot and Lapis is always good. What was up with Lapis' epic pompadour through the ep, though.

Jeez. I had a feeling something bad was gonna happen, but I thought it was gonna be like, Pumpkin dies or something. Also, I totally called Navy having a Beware the Nice Ones moment!

Also, when do you think she came up with that plan? While she was floating through space, or when she saw Steven and Garnet?

[up][up][up]

Giving you the short version: imperfections are OK in animation. Bakshi was a famous animator and the mentor for Ren and Stimpy creator John K, his style was really crude and gritty as a way to defy the Disney style (hell he once fired a guy who got onto him for being off model), and he's a big influence on a lot of today's animators for TV thanks to kickstarting storyboard driven cartoons with The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse back in the 1980's.

Lazuli is jealous of easy adaptation...

[up][up]To be honest, it felt like she could've came up with that plan at any time...like the moment Steven told her where her ship was.

The art wasn't that bad in the last few episodes...too bad they weren't the important few. All the Rubles will be creepy/charming in their own way...

That's true. Tiger Philantropist and Rocknaldo looked perfectly fine. They looked good. This was just one of the weird ones. Like, the last three Barn Buddies episodes were like this. Not my style.

But! The episode itself was really good. And yeah, I can see how Navy was supposed to be creepy, but she's just as charming while she's trying to be creepy. I like it. evil grin

I like bitter-but-not-taking-it-out-on-others Lapis a super lot, too.

I do worry that they did just put the Rubies back on a bus, but I'm really okay with how they resolved it. Even if they never become regular characters, at least Navy can rescue them from the cold, lonely grasp of space. It's a good resolution.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

there are some complaints about the storyboards and Off Model in general
The whole argument in that last post was based on assuming inconsistent scale and proportions came from the lead animator being lazy and/or deliberately pushing their own style over that of others.
Part of your job as a lead animator is to be able to stay on model.
How unfair is it to everyone else that YOU want to use your “artistic freedom” instead of your job while everybody else does what they were hired to do?
There's no clear evidence that's true. There are dozen of episodes with storyboards posted, and you can see the animation . If the animators tried to alter things for more consistent scale or character designs, that would be ignoring their job.

I just subscribe to the Ralph Bakshi ideology of animation and don't give a shit if it's off model, to be honest, depending on the series.
And Ian JQ's policy is "if you can recognize the character, they're on model" (and something like "throw your 3/4 model sheets in the garbage"). He's not on the show anymore, but I doubt this opinion varies tremendously from the rest.

Seriously, if you think the drawings are bad just say they're bad by their own merits, not because the diverge from some design you arbitrarily consider best because it's on some piece of official art.

Honestly, complaining about the show getting off model and shit is like complaining about Ren and Stimpy going off model. Sometimes that off model feel works. Somebody once pointed out how Steven looking so short in some shots of Alone at Sea helps to accentuate just how friggin' massive and terrifying Jasper is. If there was consistent models, it wouldn't have worked nearly as effectively.

Well one of them did try to kill Steven and another pulled a can on him. Though I'd have a feeling the next time they show up, it will be as a group hellbent on revenge for being messed with several times.

I mean, if it's intentional, it's okay if animation isn't "perfect". That doesn't make it good, nor bad. It's a stylistic choice.

So far, I think one occasional problem that bugs me is when eyes are drawn as commas (a black ellipsis and eyebrows). I don't have a problem when it seems like it's done intentionally - such as when the characters are far away from the camera -, but I think I've caught some scenes where it wasn't. Or, if it actually was done intentionally, sometimes it feels out of place to me because I think the characters don't seem far away enough from the camera. In short, it breaks my suspension of disbelief regarding the visual style of the show.

I'm interested that Garnet seems to imply that Navy could have gone the other way

Also that the panic and dump button is far away from the pilot is weird.

I'm still holding onto my theory that they'll show up with the rest of Homeworld. They're probably gonna end up going to talk to the Diamonds about their mission ending in failure, and if Eyeball talks about how Rose Quartz is still alive...

Maybe she will once she's alone in space and can't find the others rubies and she can't return to homeworld alone because they don't have jasper or the rest of her squad

So she goes on a space adventure!

Edit:Would the diamonds listen to them though?I can see them having an 'Aw crap' moment when they find out the rebels are still alive along with leader, and since homeworld is currently facing a resource shortage they may not to immediately want to attack earth again if they think its crawling with rebels
