Thing is though, Steven was only temporarily caught up in the illusion. He acknowledges this before he conjures her up, and gets lost in it for a bit, but it's short to last. Unlike with Greg where he had a reasonable approximation to talk with for a minute before he started saying nonsense and then Cloud Connie. Want want want want want want want want want

Since the room is capable of summoning things based on wants I'm now wondering what Rose would have conjured up based on her desires, unless the room' has an altogether different function aside summoning from up things you really want.

I really liked last episode, because even though it didn't add anything new, it made me change how I saw what was already there, I always though that it was Steven's responsability to dealt with the gems, but I never thought about how he may feel about it, whether he's ok with that or not.

Now after seeing the episode I seems that for steven Rose's for Steven like a parent that left a lot of debts for their family to pay.

It's not his responsibility as a birthright, but it became one through his own actions.

I was watching "Historical Friction," and now I want to see a mash-up of this scene and this one.

I finally got around to watching the last ep...

I think the part with Connie's mom was a little drawn out, but it did help set up the episode proper. Also, I feel good about predicting the mundane reason for her absence.

I too liked the Peanuts reference, particularly with the sampling of some of the original sound effects. I kind of wonder if the lower fidelity was dissonant for viewers not familiar with the reference, but I appreciated it.

For what "actually" happened... I think Rose's room is, at least at this point, primarily a mental projection - Steven sees and interacts with it solely on a mental level, which is why he can't take a picture or anything while inside. It's literally all in his head.

That said, in a way, I don't think the Rose that Steven met in there was solely his imagination. I have a hypothesis, based on what Rose said in the tape she left for Steven in Lion. Remember how she said "...every moment you love being yourself, that's me, loving you and loving being you."? Maybe that part of Rose within Steven isn't just loving being him; maybe part of it is also her self-loathing.

I mean, ever since the flashback from when Greg tried to fuse with her, I've been convinced that Rose really hated herself. Particularly when she said that it was "a good thing" that Greg didn't know her past (and Greg confirmed that she generally tried to avoid discussing it - I generally got the impression that Greg probably got much of the information about the Crystal Gems' past from Pearl, who would talk romantically about Rose's prowess any chance she got) - for all that Rose tried to help and live in the moment, I think she was filled with regret. In particular, I have the feeling that she felt that her greatest failure was what she had to do - the shattering of Pink Diamond. I mean, Rose could only win if she betrayed one of her core principles. And as unfair as it may be, it can be really hard to forgive yourself for doing the right thing if said right thing means betraying a belief you hold dear.

My point is, maybe Rose never did. And if part of Steven's love of life and other beings is hers, then maybe the same can be said of the resentment that he feels towards what she did. It's kind of sad to think about... but then, think of carrying that sorrow for over five millennia. Maybe Rose was just the saddest and most damaged of all the Crystal Gems, and the others just never knew.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

So for a different discussion, because I've been binge-watching Adventure Time clips on You Tube and it's giving me ideas, if it came down to it, how does Finn measure up against Steven? Because the way I see it, they compliment each other very well and it would be, if nothing else, fun to write.

Finn's specialty is the sword where Steven's is the shield (We've recently seen that Steven is strong enough to lift Rose's sword but that's obviously more Connie's weapon than Steven's).

While Steven has a lot of powers (the bubble shield which now has spikes, super strength, super speed, healing spit, and some form of flight), Finn mostly relies on his ingenuity, skill, acrobatics and toughness to win any confrontation.

Finn has the most experience by far, as he was kicking ass from Season 1 Episode 1, while it took Steven three seasons to reach "Competent."

Assume it is current Finn with his robot arm, not the grass-sword-arm-of-murder. No Jake Suit, no Smoky Quartz or Stevonnie.

My various fanfics.

Shield, Finn without grass sword can't penetrate bubble shield.

> I've been convinced that Rose really hated herself

I think so too, probably had survivor's guilt driving the intense self hatred, even though they drove the Homeworld gems off Earth and 'won' the cost was lot of gems corrupted beyond her healing powers, which let's be honest would make anyone despair,it's probably why she hid things like her sword and Lion away as she could no longer bear to look at the things that made her the leader of crystal gems.

I wonder if we're ever going to see the Rose, Garnet, and Pearl during the corruption or the immediate aftermath.

Probably not, since unless we start moving towards episodes that don't feature Steven someone would have to tell him what happened.

They have to...unless they want another outburst like in "Steven's Dream"...

This one at least has no negative impact for future warning...

Exactly, and I don't think Steven would even think to ask because he knows how painful it would be for them to recall how everybody they knew aside from Rose was horribly mutated

With the corruption wave we're only likely to see it in some sort of season final along with whole bunch of other stuff they've been setting up for

You're not wrong. People only ever seem to tell stories about Rose when she was at her best.

Bismuth's and Eyeball's rhetoric about rose was refreshing for this reason. Gosh I'm looking forward to bismuth inevitably being unbubbled. It seems like Steven's in just about the right place in universe to try it. Mostly because he wants more info and he's exhausted what the crystal gems are comfortable telling him.

I could see Steven seeking out Bismuth for one simple reason. She's the only person I can think of who has flat out said he's better than Rose
