It's either that, or the seasons are deeply fucked on Stevenverse's Earth and have much shorter or erratic lengths. Given that it appears plausible that the planet might be so different as to be rotating on a different axis
, that doesn't seem, uh, implausible. Yes, this should be causing massive ecological catastrophes constantly if this was the case, but then, pulling all of the Earth's ocean's into an orbital tower should've been straight up apocalyptic. So, basically, don't worry about that part of it.
We discussed this before: the show's calendar progression was almost real time for the first season, but then slowed down a lot. They're just now reaching the end of the year that began in "Maximum Capacity".

what seems the be, by far, the earliest (~2012) sketches of Rose and Greg, plus more pilot Pearl.
I think the big thing is that Rose looks physically smaller, while only being slightly thinner.
Me and my friend's collaborative webcomic: Forged MenThey probably changed Rose's figure to avoid stereotypical beauty tropes. Canon!Rose is beautiful, and she's also fat (and tall), which isn't something you see much in western media.
Steven Universe is pretty good at depicting fat people. Amethyst is fat, and she's a big eater and a slob, who happens to be one of the most powerful warriors on the planet. Steven's fat, and while he's not a healthy eater (donuts and pizza) he's not constantly stuffing his face and he's not sedentary either. Greg's fat, and I don't think we see him eating that much. Rose is fat, and she's the Big Good, brave, strong and attractive. Sadie's pretty chunky, and she took out a corrupted Gem with a stick. Mystery Girl is big and tall.
Maybe a belief that they should unify the Quartz designs a little bit. Rose as she stands is a taller Amethyst, and Steven is also chubby.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.True. Hmm... I wonder what pilot!Peridot and Jasper would have looked like. And Lapis. And basically every Gem character.
Me and my friend's collaborative webcomic: Forged MenFundamentally, that would just mean a more detailed version of early character designs (check wikia yourself because I'm not making these links on mobile):
- Lapis Lazuli, Sapphire: Pretty much identical.
- Lion: Really creepy, old, and mangy-looking.
- Peridot: As tall without the limb enhancers as the final design is with, and toes and heels not covered by "socks".
- Jasper: Extremely blocky and sort of gorilla-like with a simpler face.
- Ruby: The same, but with a different outfit that looks (more) like a martial arts gi.
- Bismuth: Same silhouette but with inverted eye color (black sclera and white pupil) and her crystal's pattern framing her face.
You know, as much an improvement I think the final design was, I really like Jasper's concept and think it would be good for some other quartz/warrior gem, even just an extra. Same goes for Bismuth's creepy-cute design.
Comparing how Steven originally was in the pilot as a snarky, somewhat vengeful kid to the sweet, optimistic, but still mature and capable fighter he is now, it's hard to believe it's the same character concept. The show would be extremely different if his characterization hadn't been softened from the transition.
Which is interesting, because most kid protagonists get meaner or angrier as their shows go on. While he's willing to express himself more freely with a slight bitter edge when pressed, his experiences have only served to temper his flaws and make him a harder, stronger character in the process.
I want to say the poofy hair from the "Water Witch" cover and the Monochromatic Eyes in Lapis's flashback to Bismuth were references to how they looked in sketches.
@Alley Oop, you can avoid drama by not bringing it up at all entirely, there I said it.
EDIT>The Drama, not the Rose drawing, I wanted to make this clear in case Im misunderstood, if you just said "Man, look at this drawing, she looks kinda thin though" no drama would have been brought up.
That said, Im glad Rose is fat and beautiful.
