Well...that wasn't a bad episode by any means, but I admit I found it a bit underwhelming. This is the soonest we've seen the Gems after Steven was born, but it felt like it was only the last few minutes that offered us any real character insight. In fairness, showing how the Gems dealed with Rose's "death" and coming to love Steven is something that could take up multiple episodes.
Amethyst not understanding that Rose wasn't just shapeshifting reminds me of a very young child not understanding the concept of death, and just seeing it as the person going away for awhile.
I was surprised at how cheerful Garnet was at the start, until we find out that even she didn't understand what Rose was doing. I know she's not very human-savvy, but I always imagined her as understanding better than anyone what Rose's sacrifice meant.
Pearl was being a defect again, no surprise there.
In closing, Amethyst's face was drawn weird for half of this episode.
I agree that it felt like the episode was just biding time until they could get to the serious part of "The Gems don't know what they're doing", but overall I still liked the episode.
Like I said in the subreddit, other sci-fi shows usually take the concept of "aliens don't know how humans work" and play it for laughs. This show actually took it semi-seriously, and it benefitted their Character Development for it.
Also, imagine if Pearl actually did pull out Steven's gem. Losing someone you're in love with to someone else is one thing. Having them turn into someone completely different is another. But imagine killing them in an attempt to save them. That would be horrifying for her. Although, would Rose's gem be unable to work if it was pulled out of him? I know what would poof a Gem would just kill him, but what about pulling it out?

"The cruelest thing you can do to an artist is tell them their work is flawless when it isn't." -Ben "Yahtzee" CroshawSugar did another interview
, this time about song-making.
Some other stuff:
- “I Could Never Be (Ready)” was written in a day, but some other songs take much longer—"It's Over" "took months" and many rewrites.
- "Love Like You" had the melody written first by Aivi and Surasshu, then Sugar came up with the lyrics.
- It was mentioned previously that Estelle contributed to "Stronger Than You", but Sugar also says Kate Micucci (Sadie) came up with the bridge and idea for the lyrics of “Haven’t You Noticed (I’m a Star)”.
Missed episode...3 Gems and a Baby.
But today is thursday, so it's my fault.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. There's just not a lot to talk about in this one. I feel it could have been great if it were longer, or they spent more time focusing on certain parts. I'll say that I laughed hard when Steven started crying when Garnet unfused, that is exactly what a baby would do
Me and my friend's collaborative webcomic: Forged MenSeeing OG Pearl drawn on model and...significantly thicker thighs (for some reason) looks really weird, bein' honest here.
Change is weird. That style needs to stay in off-model town back in Season 1A.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I think the cutest thing for me in this episode was Pearl making Greg tea. Friendship!
My various fanfics.I liked it. It's not a massive episode, it's a quiet, contemplative look at what happened after the kind of event we were expecting.
Again, the show takes its time. Be patient.
I like that it highlights just how confused and lost they all were. You get the feeling Rose really couldn't have imagined how hard this would leave her friends when she did this. Or if she did, she believed the massive changes that would bring would be worth it in the end, which is what I'm thinking of at the moment for her main motivation.
Change through growth is a definite theme the show's been building up throughout its run.
Anyone else think Steven losing his Gem might come up soon? "Bubbled" went out of its way to point out the concept, and it shows up again here through implication.
She waited until after he learned about the concept of fusion...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I would imagine Steven losing his Gem would, at best, result in a huge bleeding hole in his stomach and a complete loss of his magic powers, and at worst, 50% of his genetic material ceases to be projected, he loses half of his biomass, and he dies instantly in a small, unrecognizable blob of incomplete flesh.
Yeah I can't see Steven losing his Gem under any circumstances. Best case scenario it's a massive change in the show's premise, worst case scenario our protagonist is dead.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.![]()
That sounds dark as dung,
Too bad the show won't go into the specifics of it, a nice idea though.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I'd be extremely surprised if he could survive indefinitely with the gem removed, the real question is if he would die instantly or could recover if it was put back fast enough.
Having to recover from such a thing is an interesting idea. It would be another "Steven needs to control his powers or they'll ruin his life" plot, but would be a good opportunity for self-examination because it would probably be harder than "stick the gem back in the hole". And Steven being metaphysically split in two and then pulling himself together Dr. Manhattan-style sounds freakin' dope.
Instant death is not something that going to actually happen, for obvious reasons. But that could reasonably be concluded in-show as the most likely result—or at least one likely enough that they (successfully) decide to avoid testing their hypothesis. That would at least be better than never discussing it.

What a lovely episode. <3
I'd missed good episodes.
Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.
