That would be amusing, fanart of Connie falling for Centi, if only because it's the closest approximation to Naru.

Painful, and ending next week.

Watched the Jasper's Corruption marathon today. Cried a little.

I got around to reading the description for the upcoming episode:

"When Steven has his autumn visit to the barn, he brings a new stranger into his life."

With that description, it's likely that the "new stranger" is something totally out of the blue, and being downplayed by calling them a "stranger.

I have three guesses for who it could be:

  1. A new Gem (probably a one-time character like Bismuth) living inside of a non-Gem body, thanks to Steven's powers. Maybe they're a lead to the cure for Gem corruption? Plus it could make for a sad moment if the new body starts to age/decay, and Steven has to tell them about aging and/or death.
  2. One of the regular Gems (one of the three moms, Peri, Lapis or even a cured Jasper) loses their memory. They're a stranger to Steven because they don't remember him. I would think, if this is what happens, that the one who would be the heaviest hit if they lost their memory would be Pearl or Jasper.
  3. Rose. As in Rose's subconscious takes physical form outside of Steven, and the episode is all about him meeting his mom for the first time. That would make the double meaning of "stranger" super poignant, since Steven's mom is technically still a stranger to him.

If I'm being honest, 3 is the one I most expect to happen, or at least the one I most want to happen. Plus, the scene of Steven violently stabbing the pumpkin without thinking how the Pumpkin Dog sees it could be some excellent foreshadowing to "Rose" showing Steven something she finds normal that he finds horrifying. Maybe it will be have a double meaning with the title as well, and what Rose shows him is what Gem harvesting is. Who knows, maybe the Gems used a form of Human Resources.

Honestly, I expect the description to be a fakeout. It seems to be describing the pumpkin dog, but I feel like the actual episode won't deal with the "stranger" too heavily.

And I've heard a few people propose the idea that Jasper will lose her memory if she gets uncorrupted, and that idea really rubs me the wrong way. I'm always bothered when someone bad losing their memory is treated as a chance for redemption, because it's not even the same character at thar point, plus it cheapens the redemption.

I don't think anyone specified that Jasper losing her memories would be a good thing. Maybe have her notice how hard Steven is working to restore her memories, and when she gets them back she has two conflicting sets of feelings regarding Steven. Either way, I'm not seeing her being open and willing to listen to Steven with her current mental state anytime soon, even if she's uncorrupted.

I still dislike memory loss related redemptions for a slew of reasons.

Either way, I figured out what Gem Harvest will be about. The new Swordsday promo spoils it in a freeze frame.

Nobdy likes Memory loss redemption...it's cop-out writing. It avoids having to develop character by taking the easy way out.

Pretty much. You're writing a blank slate at that point, not Jasper. You aren't having Jasper learn that she's been doing bad things, and you aren't seeing Jasper deal with her self hatred or anything. There's so much story potential from an actual Jasper redemption, like finding out more about what homeworld's side of the war was like, or what it's like to come out of a fully operational kindergarten, or even dropping more bombshells about bad things Rose and the Crystal Gems have done.

Amnesia redemptions just aren't as good.

For what it's worth, when i saw "new stranger", and considering the preview clip we had, I assumed it was just the pumkin pet Steven made.

I think there's potential for memory-loss redemption. Though not in and of itself. I would say it could work as a means to redemption. For example, let's say the memory-loss gives the character a chance to experience things they never would otherwise, then once their memory is restored they're left pondering whether or not Good Feels Good. They don't turn good because they lost their memories, losing their memories just offers the chance to turn good they may not have had otherwise.

In this scenario, Jasper loses her memories so, while powerful, she is not inherently hostile. Steven tries to use this chance to show her good things in life and on earth. When Jasper remembers, she also remembers what happened while she was amnesiac. The experience might curb her hostility, or you could even go the other way and make it an Ignored Epiphany.

I didn't think they would use the memory loss to redeem her when I made that theory, but I guess that would be the only thing that could happen if it was jasper.

Maybe my other guess, would be better, and Pearl would lose her memory, and have to learn that the Rose she knew no longer exists all over again.

Or maybe memory loss isn't that great of a character device in the first place. I just wanted three theories, and I doubt that will be what happens. sad

EDIT: I really want the "stranger" to be Rose, though.

I'll put it in a spoiler tag in case anyone wants to avoid it.

The person flying the biplane, if you pause the video at the right spot, looks just like Greg's aunt from the picture of her and his uncle in the barn. The stranger is Greg's aunt.

Which is why some are speculating that Steven's dream hopping again, and that he's contacting Jasper. Would certainly tie into Peri's comment about Quartz soldiers being grown. The pallete is orange and yellow similar to every other Gem's mindscape matching the color of her Gem.

I don't know maybe I'm just being inundated with people on Tumblr who want to see Jasper again.

I dunno, I'm just not optimistic for Jasper's redemption happening at all anytime soon at this point. I've been disappointed so many times that they could literally announce an episode titled "Jasper gets uncorrupted and begins her redemption arc" and I'd expect it to be about Mayor Dewey teaching Steven about stamp collecting.

Also so that I can say TOLD YA SO and then laugh at everyone on Reddit who said otherwise.

We've said this how many times? It would be completely uncharacteristic for the show to just drop Jasper like a hot potato and never uncorrupt or bubble her ever again. Seeya Jasper, we'll never, ever, ever be seeing you again. Seriously? Come on, she'll be back.

This show hasn't dropped a single plot thread yet. They've planned all this out ahead of time, they know what they're doing. Sure, it might take a while, but it's only been ten episodes.

Look at Centi. She took 70 episodes to come back.

More ontopic, I'm looking forward to seeing them, it'll be nice to get to know what a previously unexplored character is doing.

[up] While I agree, I think a broader point can be made about the show not keeping plot threads around for long. Sure, Centi came back, but she was literally in two episodes before getting put on a bus again. Bismuth got bubbled at the end of her episode and could come back literally whenever. The Cluster seemed less like an urgent thing that needed to be solved and more like an excuse to change locations (at least it was treated more like an overarching threat, but not for long). Malachite was only mentioned once (Chile Tid) between when she was formed and when she was defeated. And everyone likes to joke about how unceremoniously Jasper was put out of the story until they needed her again.

Again, this is one of the only flaws I find problems I have with the show: While it never forgets about a plot point, there are some pretty large gaps before it's mentioned again, let alone solved. I've heard that happens a lot with anime in general, but I wouldn't know.

I don't know if "Bus Depot" is a trope, where characters come back only to be put on a bus again, but it would definitely fit this show.
