"Watermelon Steven" explains a later episode. I saw the one where the Lapis/Jasper fusion resurfaces and an island full of weird watermelon-people help bring her down. Now i understand where those people came from.

Also gathered that this was the same island from "Island Adventure."

Now Island Adventure was an interesting episode because of how easily (relatively) Sadie took down that gem monster, suggesting that aside from The Masquerade humanity might not need the Crystal Gems to protect them.

Of course, this isn't the kind of show that gets into that worldbuilding, but it's still something that often goes assumed in speculative fiction, that muggles are helpless against the supers of the setting.

Most humans just don't seem to know or care.

And corrupted gems seems to normally ignore humans and just go after uncorrupted gems (though they can cause collateral damage along the way).

Peridot's first appearance was insanely brief.

Better get used to it, she doesn't become a major player for a while.

I've seen an episode with Pearl and Amethyst but no Garnet, and an episode of Garnet and Pearl but no Amethyst. Is there an episode with Garnet and amethyst but no Pearl?

Sorry to barge in on the thread, but was recommended this elsewhere, gave it three episodes, saw nothing special and forgot about it. Then was recommended it again, and again but I dismissed it as the standard hype for better than average western animation. And then I was recommended it again.

So I decided to pop in here and ask if there's a relative consensus on when this show gets good. Understanding the subjective reality of good, I'm not looking for a hard episode number, but some vague idea would be good. How many episodes should I give this before making my mind on it?

I'd say it picks up around 12 or so? The episode Giant Woman. And then it really picks up after 25/26.

Oh really when?

Seconding that. Giant Woman is where the show first starts introducing big stuff, though earlier episodes do set up some foreshadowing you'll want to see. Then the episode Mirror Gem is where the show finally breaks into what it is now.

Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem is basically the start of the show's plot, with everything before that serving as scene-setting.

Note that Bismuth, while one of the high points of the series, is a much later episode.

On Reformed, Pearl herself is mostly absent, but her shadow looms large over the episode.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

I can't remember, why didn't they bring her along?

Also yeah, the obligatory 12, then 17, and 25-26. That doesn't mean skip ahead though, as others said there's important scene-setting and foreshadowing.

17 is the big indicator of the plot and is a critical episode, and the two-parter "Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem" is when the payoff is rewarded.

Pearl was helping Gregory fix the van...Amethyst tagged along because it was her room, and Steven tagged along because he was already pestering Amethyst about that online test.
