That would be so seductive.

Interesting rough start.

Normal cartoons do not start with reveal that team leader sacrificed her physical form to give birth to protagonist.
(¯–¯): Neither did this one, it was the 2nd episode.

x3 I don't think the first episode mentioned any of that. And although Laser Light Canon talked a bit about Rose I don't believe it told us much about her. Plus lots of kids shows that are on the light side involve single parents, that doesn't always tell us that the show is gonna be deep or anything.
And even if it did mention that stuff, the way it was mentioned was probably casual in a way that we didn't realize the serious nature of the matter.

Well, that's not quite wrong.
Greg never really struck me as a hippie, though.

Oh God! Natural light!I came in knowing very little about the show, aside from a blogger I followed expressing her love for the character development. I caved in and gave it a binge.
By the second episode I was already getting a sense that things were a lot more structured than AT, and they had an idea of the mythology going in. I also found Steven to be a lot more likable when you could see how earnest he was in spite of his messups and see him slowly improve as apposed to the out-of-context clips in commercials.
By "Lion 2: the Movie", I knew there was going to be something big with the plot coming up. The stuff with Lion, the command-based instructions he was following with Steven, all the destiny discussion, pulling out what was clearly Rose's sword, etc.
Actually, the fact that Rose was brought up constantly, even in the early episodes was an indication that there was a coherent backstory and a method to the madness. The new abilities and limitations that were explored with the Gems grounded what they could do.
One of the things that confused me when I first heard about but didn't watch the show was that the Gems just seemed to be there. That there was so very few of them around and his mom was one seemed an odd setup at the time.

He seemed like a middle-aged hippie to me, what with the long hair, the living in a van, the outlook on life he has, and the fact that he's a musician.

I think everyone realized the actual meaning of that statement...the reactions were pretty tight to make notice and speculate.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice."Laser Light Cannon" aired at the same day as "Gem Glow", you nitpickers. And most shows with single parents ignore existence of the other one, not make them a major plot point like that.
Besides there were other stuff. For example, gems left by poofed monsters that girls warped somewhere clearly hinted something more or they would explain it in first episode. Really, nothing about it sounded like random fun idea to put in show that won't have an arc of secrets or anything.
That episode was a two parter...I didn't know that.
"Nitpickers" that's what should've been in those parenthesis.

I'd say that there are features from the pilot designs that I wish carried over into the main show. For example I don't miss Amethyst's fanny pack. But I wish Pearl and Garnet kept their hair. I also liked their skin colors in the pilot. The stars are incorporated better in the main show designs, though. Overall, each of them have features I miss and don't miss.
In looking for what they looked like in the pilot, I found this cool post
