I remember thinking that at the beginning that it was just trying to be another show like Adventure Time, and not succeeding. even though I did enjoy it. But I held AT in very high regard at the time. It's funny because now I enjoy Steven Universe so much more than AT.

I'm not sure that's possible...
It's best to drop the comparison mindset early on...

Probably not. But unlike organic creatures, they aren't constrained by physical needs and have a potentially endless life span, so if something else did exist before them, I wouldn't be surprised if those species are all gone.
Edit: And I do agree it's best not to compare Adventure Time and Steven Universe, even though I enjoy Steven Universe more. They don't really go for the same thing.

I still consider Adventure Time to be just as good as Steven Universe. Saw a bit of the show, namely Gem Glow, Cat Fingers, and Frybo, so I knew it had potential, then I decided to get into it seriously once I saw an out-of-context clip of Garnet singing 'Stronger than You' while looking around You Tube for a rock song with 'I'm stronger than you' as a prominent lyric.

The gems are one of the original sentient beings of the cosmos?

I know you aren't doing that comparison thing now.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. The episodes of Adventure Time Rebecca Sugar worked on were amazing. So I always knew there was potential for Steven Universe to be fantastic. But I didn't know what exactly to expect from it when it started, or how much it would do. I did realize at the time though, that it would probably be one of those shows where you have to give it time to set things up and develop to get into.
x3 So how many Rock songs have they lyric "I'm stronger than you"?
x4, Yeah, I thought that's what you were saying, so my reply had mostly been for the one right above me.
I don't know why it was but as much as I liked Steven Universe as it got going, I still didn't pay much attention to the episodes, I think I kept getting distracted by my phone cuz I had a bad habit of playing on my phone while I watched TV. And then we lost satellite so I just stopped keeping up with the show. It wasn't until last year that I decided to do a small rewatch then catch up with the rest of the episodes, that was when I realized just how amazing SU was and it kept getting better.

The first Steven thing I ever saw was an ad with Let Me Drive My Van Into Your Heart that played when I went to watch a movie and sat down early enough to see the ads they play before previews.
It was nice, though a song about a single vehicle mostly tends to strike me as humorous, and I didn't think much of it until half my main Homestuck skype group suddenly began swarming the Steven wagon and I was like "lol ok".
I had the misfortune of being spoiled on Garnet being a fusion, back when it was a big deal, but I pretended to have no idea because it was more fun that way.
moved to Oceanstuck because this handle was starting to bother me my tumblrHell I was on board from the start (I started this thread!
) I always kind of expected that the show would be mainly Slice of Life with all the important plot stuff only happening occasionally, though I do agree that it took a bit for the show to pick up. I actually though Steven was really annoying for the first half of season 1.
Its kinda funny going back to the early pages of the thread and seeing everyone complain about the final designs of the gems compared to the pilot's when they were revealed.

GUNDAMU GUNDAMUMostly Garnet and Amethyst.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. To be fair, SU did start out a bit odd. I remember watching Cat Fingers at a relatives house and then TTG started right after, someone commented that TTG actually seemed the better of the two and less weird. Ain't that something? I'm sure that person has seen enough of SU and TTG now to think differently, but it's kinda funny in retrospect.
I don't think it matters if the gems are older than any other sapient lifeforms in the universe. The simplest resolution to the Fermi Paradox is that the universe has multiple intelligent life forms, but they're so spread apart that multiple races could explore space for millions of years without having any awareness of each other.
I'm aware of the difference between the two (as much as there is one) but I think sentient works better for the range I was going for. As in they might predate all organic life itself.
Edit: Although, thinking about it,that might not be possible for any of them besides possibly the Diamonds.

I definitely wasn't expecting the show to become as deep and complex as it is now. I distinctly remember seeing an advertisement for it on You Tube, and I thought it looked really stupid. I don't remember what made me actually decide to start watching it, but I mostly watched it because I thought it was very cute, but I didn't have that much of an interest in it. "Giant Woman" was what got me more interested in the show, I think. And then "Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem" really excited me because I was like, "Holy shit, there's an actual plot to this!"
When we're done, there won't be anything left.I remember that when AT suffered a massive drop in the fanbase during Season 6 (the love it or hate it season according to many), there was a divide between AT fans and SU fans who held up SU as superior and AT as being inferior, while the AT fans got really defensive about it.
Nowadays the fanbases have kinda cooled, but AT's fanbase has never really recovered from the schism.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?![]()

If they weren't Artificial after all, I could believe it...but I don't think it would change much.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. The first episode I really really liked was Giant Woman, that's when I started to see the potential of the show. I was a fan after that and stuck around for a good while, but I kept missing episodes, so although I could see how good the show was getting I wasn't getting the full picture.

Personally I think the AT fandom is one of the better ones out there.

For he who asked: this
was the song I was looking for when I found Garnet singing her song.......... don't judge me.
I won't judge, but I will remember this for a while...

Anyway, how would you feel about gems being the first sentient species in the universe?
