Just to cap off that whole discussion about homeworld, I find it inappropriate to call a society evil and leave it at that; any realistic society is the way it is for various reasons, some good, some bad, and most of them (at least seemingly) necessary at one point in time.

Caprase always takes the most cynical interpretation of human motives and admitably this view is more justified with Gems.
Mostly because they're under the absolute rule of a few individuals who want to mindlessly increase the physical breadth of their empire without any apparent intellectual or cultural goals besides maintaining status quo.

I disagree that modern society is fundamentally different.
Who said modernity had anything to do with it? Total apathy towards cultures seen as "others" is not a universal trait of human culture across time or space, nor is the monolithic value of material gain over all else—ethics have value even in terms of personal gain.

Do you think Blue Diamond came to Earth after Pink Diamond was shattered to take over, or was her presence there just a bit of reinforcement with her court?
I think Pink Diamond died later: Bismuth knew Garnet and I think would have brought it up if they'd already killed a Diamond during her speech.

Yeah, I think if Pink Diamond had already been shattered, Blue Diamond's security would be a lot more robust than two Quartzes and some Rubies.

I will say if the Diamonds actually think of each other as "sisters" that's going to be pretty interesting. Concepts like family seem pretty antonym to Gems, even if they do have loved ones.

I feel like they would. This is hinted at or mentioned literally no where but I always got the impression the Diamonds aren't really gems. At least not exactly like the other gems.

I get the feeling those four have been around a lot longer than the Gem Empire and other gems in general.

Oh really when?

Well, apparently every other Gem was made to serve them so that fits.

Speaking of which, I wonder how far the loyalty is supposed to extend. Like, Homeworld Gems obviously revere all of the Diamonds, but what are the limits. Like, are Pearls supposed to be more loyal to their Diamonds than whoever their owner is? And how far those a Diamond's authority over a gem that belongs to another Diamond extend?

@thatother: In my view, the fundamental issue is not that Humans Are Bastards, but rather the impersonal nature of large scale social structures makes "evil" all too easy. Human empathy does not function properly on scales beyond that of "the tribe"; that's a readily apparent phenomena that leads to things such as A Million Is a Statistic and enables perfectly normal and reasonable people to issues or follow orders which result in horrific suffering and destruction without batting an eye, or to cause harm to a great many people for the benefit of their friends and family. We've devised various workarounds that allow for large scale social structures to remain mostly cohesive, but when it comes down to it, human behavior in aggregate leaves much to be desired.

From the looks of things, Gem society is flawed in a very similar manner, perhaps to an even greater extent, which is undoubtedly exasperated by the fact that different castes of Gems have intrinsic abilities and aptitudes which set them apart from one another in ways that simply don't apply to human societies.

@LBSK: Garnet's Ruby is believed to have belonged to yellow diamond, and Blue felt no need to consult Yellow before ordering her execution, so I'd say they have quite a bit of authority when it comes to lower caste gems.

All I can imagine now is the Diamonds doing stupid shit like requisitioning members from each other's court to do random bullcrap in an effort to annoy each other.

Like White Diamond stealing a bunch of Yellow Diamond's Bismuths to build a vacation home.

The diamonds trolling each other with their subordinates is a pretty funny image.

Why is Ruby believed to belong to Yellow? I see no evidence for her not belonging to Blue.

The Gems are all just one big happy family.

[up][up] People hypothesized on the tropes page that each caste of gem is associated with a particular Diamond; Rubies and Peridots (and maybe Bismuths) being Yellow Diamond's, Lapises and Sapphires being Blue's, and so on. Much like each lesser gem would be designed to fulfill a particular role, each of the diamonds would specialize with a particular type of servants; common soldiers and technicians for Yellow, Aristocrats and Diplomats for Blue, wild mass guessScientists and Administrators for Whitewild mass guess, and hell if I know for pink.

Yeah, but there are a ton of Rubies. Our Ruby considered herself expendable because of that fact. And she didn't even seem upset about thinking of it that way, she just said it like a fact.

Edit: I feel like Bismuth's being architects and the like would be more likely to go with Yellow Diamond. Lapis was probably one of Bue's.

Blue Diamond had a pair of quartzes guarding her. Possibly even Jaspers.

I don't think that holds up as much anymore, since each Diamond has their own colonies. Which makes me thing they have their own of everything. There might be some difference, with Blue preferring the company of aristocrats and other elites, Yellow being more business like, ect. But still having their own armies, technicians, courts, ect.

Like, in most circumstances, Pink would be expected to deal with her own colonies and her own Gems, with the others only helping out initially because Pink was new and the colony was new.

How would Pearl feel about attacking another Rose Quartz?

Would she cry?

Would she hesitate?

Would she...DO IT?!?

I'd image they each have some of each, but some gems are more associated with one Diamond.

CaptainCapsase from Orbiting Sagittarius A* Since: Jan, 2015

[up][up][up][up] They'd obviously have all sorts of gems, but that doesn't necessarily mean a particular caste doesn't (at least theoretically) belong to a particular diamond; it would be a good way of creating a balance of power between the diamonds to prevent them from infighting if they were made dependent on one another for particular gem castes.

[up] If the officers belong to one diamond, the quartermasters to another, the common soldiers to a third, and the spies and special forces to a fourth, that's a workable arrangement.

@random: If that entire caste of gem hasn't been retired, color me surprised.
