That's just their symbol, it's always been their symbol.

It could just be different characters or symbols.
@LSBK: Eh, not really IMHO; this sort of sidestepping of language issues is pretty darn common, especially when a constructed language would be involved. Maybe Steven has a omni-glot power or something like that going on, hence why he can understand Peridot and other homeworld gems. AFAIK, there's been no interactions between her and humans other than Steven beyond shoving Greg off of the roof of the barn to see if he could fly.

It wouldn't explain the reading bit; under that theory, the homeworld gems are presumably speaking their own languages when conversing with one another, which ends up rendered as English due to the Translation Convention. Since Steven can't read the gem language, I would assume this hypothetical omniglot power doesn't extend to written language.

Your generalization should be HW Gems, not just Peridot.
Also Lazy Lazuli understood Gregory just fine.

I mean Gems all having an omniglot power (Steven included) that doesn't extend to written language is a perfectly workable explanation for the language issues, and makes sense for the aforementioned reasons. It's my headcanon until proven otherwise.

" Peridot and other homeworld gems."
Reading comprehension man.

Lazuli is another HW Gem...interacting with human.
Reading comprehension, what? There was nothing to comprehend, I just didn't see it.

I haven't seen that episode, so that explains that. Though Lapis isn't quite a homeworld gem in that she's been on Earth since the rebellion, seemingly kept around as a novelty, and since she was aware of her surroundings there's at least some plausibility of her being able to speak English. Peridot and Jasper (and Yellow Diamond and her Pearl) are the ones that absolutely have no way of knowing human languages barring Gems having a natural omniglot ability.

She's been trapped in a Mirror since the rebellion.

In Earthlings Jasper visualized each of the Diamonds as being made of smaller gems that fit together.
