The two gems known to be semi-permanently fused were the first two known gems of different types to fuse, and they just happened to do it by accident which never happened ever because they were destined to fall in love or whatever.
Could be considered a bit contrived.
Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.Who ever said they were destined to fall in love? I'd say the show is very much against that kind of thinking.
And none of that is contrived, because, like I said, there's always going to be a first. The reason it never happened before (or at least was not known) were made abundantly clear in the episode.

It probably wasn't though.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. And who says we saw a Bismuth poof Lapis? People were assuming that Lapis was there when Ruby and Sapphire fused but that never amounted to anything. The silhouettes are not that detailed.
But more than that, I kind of just want to move away from drama with Lapis. And what, do you want Bismuth to feel bad about it? Pearl almost poofed Sapphire when they first meet. I'd actually be more annoyed if the show acted like that was a thing either of them needed to apologize for.

I have two main theories about why Bismuth was bubbled in Lion's mane.
1. Bismuth was a danger to herself and the gems around her, and Rose thought that the best way to handle her was to bubble her to make sure that she couldn't hurt anyone.
2. Bismuth was corrupted by the Diamond attack, but suffered a far more gradual corruption than most victims. Rose bubbled her and placed her inside Lion's mane to keep her safe until she could figure out how to heal the corruption.
I hope Bismuth poofed Lapis, but Lapis didn't know since she was attacked from behind, and Lapis starts talking about it around Bismuth and she's just like
Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.The Bismuth that poofed Lapis was more detailed even than the other Gems in that same flashback. The other gems we see, if I recall correctly, were presented as highly stylized sillhouettes.
They were hinting at Bismuth since the first time Steven went into Lion's mane. It seems very improbable to me that they'd put a character who clearly looks like Bismuth into Lapis's flashback, take care to make her more detailed than the other gems we see, and not intend for it to be Bismuth.
She was fine in other episodes...

I know this has no bearing on what happens, but it's kinda funny.
Promo art!
Which also conveniently answers the question I was about to ask.

That's not a contrivance, that's two people accidentally breaking a deeply held social taboo. There's always going to be a first. Nor is it contrived that they happened to join the C Gs because that was their whole reason for joining in the first place.
And anyway, wasn't Lapis poofed by someone from Home World? Or did they just pick her up thinking she was one of the CG?
