Stephen is still "Rose"...there's still hope left in this world for them to fight.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. Her only reason for existing is to fight, and the one person she always is obsessed with fighting is Rose. At this point, her mission has failed, her partner defected, her ship is destroyed, she can't become Malachite...
All she's got left is killing Rose. If she finds out Rose died 14 years ago, that'd leave her with absolutely no purpose. No purpose = no reason to exist. It'd break her, emotionally.
She could still kill the Crystal Gems...or maybe some humans.

It bothers me that the main conflict between Steven and Amethyst was so played for comedy, because that is a really good spike for some conflict, and instead it's just a big joke that feels like it should be so much more. Could you imagine if Pearl v Amethyst at Kindergarten was like this? "I'm so much fatter than you, Pearl!"
But when it allowed itself to be dramatic, it worked. Steven getting outright pissed at Amethyst for resenting his progress and acting like being weak was what he should be was a really good beat, and them just collapsing together at the end, Amethyst lamenting that for all she's told she can be anything, she can never be what she wants to be, completely ignorant of the fact that she just helped Peridot through this exact scenario, while Steven has to deal with the fact that he's not Rose, and it is super significant that he said her full name, rather than referring to her as mom. He's not talking about her this time; he's talking about the legacy he needs to live up to.
Other than that I also really like seeing Steven getting angry. My only significant complaint with Steven, and really the entire show, is that Steven has shown himself to be too psychoanalytical at times, so I'm liking Season 3 showing him acting cunning, mischievous, and downright angry sometimes.
@random: Well, sure, but in "The Return", before she found out that Steven was "Rose", she didn't even want to bother fighting the Crystal Gems because they weren't worth her time. But with "Rose", she has a personal vendetta, since Rose actually beat her. So I guess it's different.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.Sure, but they were not sent to Earth to deal with the Crystal Gems. Jasper should have reported this first, and then done as commanded. Since it's Rose, they'd probably want to send more than a single Quartz warrior and a Peridot to deal with her. Call it in, and wait for new orders and perhaps back up.

"Rose" only "beat" her last episode...they've never actually met on the battlefield: war setting. If anything she should have a grudge towards Garnet.

Amethyst and Pearl aren't threats proved by the whomp whooping given in "Crack the whip"...so it's really just Garnet and "Rose" Stephen that the "Jasper" gem needs to deal.

On the subject of Amethyst betraying the Gems, we've talked about that before, and I said that I didn't think it would happen unless things got really, really bad, bad to a level that I honestly don't think the show would go.
In my opinion, a more likely scenario is instead of Amethyst defecting to Homeworld, she makes a one-off deal with them. In exchange for doing one particular thing for them, they'd reform her to be like other Quartzes. Naturally, this would have huge repurcussions, even if Ame goes back to the Crystal Gems.

They tried to make them useful, but a character good at spacing and a character who doesn't flinch pretty much ruin it regardless.
Unlike Sugilite, Jaspee doesn't have a weapon that'll cause self harm...

I just wish the show got that across better. I hope that does end up being her motivation.

"The cruelest thing you can do to an artist is tell them their work is flawless when it isn't." -Ben "Yahtzee" CroshawGet it across better? Besides trying to fuse with Lazuli, she's been doing nothing but fighting...mostly trying to fight the Crystal Gems.
That part about Rosey is just speculation, the only thing she seems obsessed with is getting stronger.

Amethyst is just one of those people who likes feeling superior...when special.
Thas why she was the cool "big" sis of a gem, she never offered Stephen much support...can't have him growing up too fast.
