Theory about Lion.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
I guessing that the lesson here is that, even in this show's universe, some people are just assholes through and through.
Truth in Television, but my main point is moreso that you can be an asshole but still be an interesting character with complexities. IMO It would have been more interesting if say, Marty did really want to connect with his son somehow, but he had his hands tied behind his back due to needing to promote the soda and his inherently manipulative nature just led him to sabotage himself.
As it stands Marty is just a straightforward asshole. It works sure but it's not the most interesting thing they could have done.

I figured for a bit that Marty was just trying to buy Sour Cream's approval, then get pissed when it's suggested that doesn't make up for the neglect. But he wasn't even doing that, and it seems like he doesn't even really have money anyway.

You know, if Marty wasn't such a manipulative jerk, he could have used pretty much the situation as-is and it could have been a good thing ("I'm promoting a soda. I can get you a gig with professional equipment"). Well, except for the soda, I don't think any quantity of that can be considered a good thing.
