I really doubt Marty was created to be ever remotelly sympathetic.
Even Greg says Marty is dead for him.
He could just be a jerk to the core. But I also think it's possible the flashback might be biased. Greg said to begin with that it's the version of the story with Marty in it. Plus the way the episode uses the Slasher Smile / More Teeth than the Osmond Family tropes on Marty seems like it could be exaggerating him. At least a bit.
But I'm indifferent either way.

In a work where one of the recurring themes is that people, while not perfect (often very visibly so), are rarely if ever so static and one-note as to be easily categorizable into "good" or "bad"?
I'd be a bit suspicious of the prospect of him being only a Hate Sink.

moved to Oceanstuck because this handle was starting to bother me my tumblrDidn't somebody put up a comic that reflects the ending of that one episode of The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air where Will's dad comes back, only to leave just as soon as he arrived? Except it was Sour Cream, Marty, and Yellowtail as Will, his dad, and Uncle Phil respectively?
If I had to take a guess, I wouldn't be surprised if an episode where Marty comes back (whether it's Dropbeat Dad or not) is reflective of that episode, and goes down similar to that comic.
"The cruelest thing you can do to an artist is tell them their work is flawless when it isn't." -Ben "Yahtzee" CroshawFor some reason I love every fanart with those two interacting.
Me and my friend's collaborative webcomic: Forged MenI'm perfectly willing to believe that Marty's as big a jerk as Greg remembers him.
...Maybe Marty won't even show up, and that episode (which seems likely that it will be about Sour Cream) will be about SC thinking he'll show up, only for him not to. Kind of like Soos' Dad, I guess.
Oh God! Natural light!I'm not really sure if Sour Cream would really care to see Marty again...he doesn't seem like he would've left a good impression...if he was even around by the time his kid was conscious enough to remember him all the way to his teen years.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Well it was misleading...it just mislead us into a clever pun.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I never thought for a second that Hit The Diamond would be anything other than a baseball episode. Steven Universe doesn't mislead with puns in the title, it more straight-up lies about the primary content of certain episodes to our face.

And even if he didn't, there's STILL room for growth. Lowball bet here...maybe he didn't even KNOW Sour Cream was even born?
