So, in one of the episodes they mentioned that these enemies they have been fighting are corrupted gems. Are they just gem creatures turned hostile or is it implied that they once too had a humanoid appearance?
Also, without going into too much spoiler-territory, will i find out the cause of this, as well as the decayed state of many structures belonging to the gems?
We don't know precisely what "being corrupted" means, but those Gems almost definitely Sapient, human looking Gems in the past. We still don't know how or why these gems were created, but there is a theory that's supported by one of the most recent episodes. As for the Gem structures, well, there used to be way more Gems on Earth, but now there aren't and the buildings and stuff have fallen into disrepair.

We will learn about how corruption sets in, it's coming up...eventually.
The decayed state of the structures is pretty obvious, they're old and abandoned because the only gems left on Earth are the three Crystal Gems.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. If you rewatch "Monster Buddies" Centipeedle actually looks humanoid for a few moments while she's regenerating.
So yeah, they were once living, humanoid, occasionally breathing Gems, then Bad Thing We Don't Know Exactly What happened, and only Rose, Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl escaped the corruption.
I just had a thought - Where does the Crystal Gems' income come from? In the first episode, Pearl mentions that they paid for the Cookie Cat ice cream, and obviously their household has plenty of food and video games and whatnot. And I thought it was implied that Steven's dad was really poor (He's living out of his van, isn't he?). We never exactly see any of the Gems holding down a day job. Where does their money come from?
I've got Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash, Spyro, and Paper Mario fanfics.
Greg financially supports Steven. That's why he lives in a van. The events of "House Guest" are a lot Harsher in Hindsight once you know that
Though I've always wondered just how much Greg was Stepford Smiling.

Holy crap, I hadn't even considered that. Man, it's like every single aspect of this show has some horrible hidden implication behind it. This show sucks you in with the cuteness and then breaks your heart...

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I feel like it's kind of mean that the Gems don't let Greg live in the house he built even though there's plenty of room. I mean in House Guest it seemed like Greg believed he needed an excuse to live there, so I don't think he's really happy with the situation.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.I'm 90% sure none of the Gems would care if Greg lived with Steven. He just doesn't want to be too close t the magic alien stuff (anymore. I mean, he was pretty close to some magic Alien stuff before If You Know What I Mean).
Pearl clearly didn't want him living there...

I don't think wearing a Fry costume is something to be so melodramatic about.
He just wanted to actually work at the restaurant, not be a mascot.
