Females are the dominant life-form? My dream came true.

The most numerous life-form counts as dominant? But that would mean...

My judgement may have been rash, but I still accept it.

The prokaryotic bacteria would like a word with you.
Meanwhile, the viruses patiently wait to be classified as alive. Then they will stage a coup and crown HTVC 01 P as king
Gems being nominally genderless but actually all-women reminds me of that one episode of Star Trek The Next Generation where there was supposed to be a genderless, androgynous humanoid species, but the casting department picked mannish-looking women to play all of them, which then ruined the Aesop when Riker tried to date one of them, from dealing with gender nonconformity in general to the story of one woman trying to escape forced lesbianism.
There could be some masculine force that interacts with the gems, such that the male "gems" are not really a distinct being or anything, but still interacts with them to create new gems as opposed to the fusions which are the representations of f/f bonding.
Going back to the previous page, @Smartgirl: If I understand your question correctly, there's the Asari from Mass Effect. All identify/present as female, despite having no set biological sex (a plot point is their ability to reproduce with anyone, regardless of sex or race or species or anything). It's still not much, but SU isn't the only series to do it.
And also that's talking about sex which with a conversation like this is generally irrelevant to the discussion.
That is to say, female or male biology wise, if they don't share characteristics of either human sex, or really the sex of any lifeform on Earth, then trying to identify them as either gender is a moot point. Technically this makes any successful "hard AI" attempt female, from a "biological" perspective, but in practice they're going to be gendered every which way.
And this is also assuming that A. aliens speak English and actually have words that refer to each respective gender, or B. that whatever translation used assumes "they" as the correct gender-neutral pronoun as opposed to "him" or technically "her".
If the crewniverse for whatever reason really, really wanted a male gem, it wouldn't be a matter of sex, it'd be a matter of gender.
(*o*): Oh snap, that makes so much sense.

Not trying to knock you and say your wrong, but every time I look up female it is defined as the sex that creates the egg (or otherwise larger, not mobile gametes. Males produce sperm and pollen). Do you have a more indepth source where I can look into it myself? 'Cause now I'm interested.

Those are both interesting theories.

A deleted scene even confirmed it is shapeshifting and not regeneration that there doing (the scene where Amethyst was teaching Peridot to eat). It's mostly the digestive system but I don't see how the reproductive system should be different. Stretching is different from changing the interior of the body I imagine.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Do the Gems have digestive tracts going 24/7?
Because nine months is a long time.

Tiger Millionaire leads me to believe that they can't hold a form for too long either, that scene with Amethyst turning back to normal wouldn't really make sense otherwise. Peridot also says something about energy consumption in Logdate 7 15 2.
It'd be unnecessary for Pearl and Garnet doesn't even eat as much as Amy.

For starters, Gems are hard light beings, they have nothing to pass on but their gems.
Two, Steven has Rose's gem, the whole gem. Although this begs the question of what exactly was growing within Rose during the months leading up to Steven's birth, Steven does have the whole of Rose.

Should have clarified: I've heard them called that for simplicity sake, but never heard them referred to as female. I've also never heard that non-organic things are always female, either.
