I don't know if this is a recent thing, or if I'm just noticing it, but it feels like the series has reached a sort of ideal ground. I only noticed it with these recent "comedown" episodes (which I won't spoil). It's like Adventure Time in a way, in that the story now has free reign. Anything that happens now doesn't have to advance the plot, but will definitely flesh out out the characters in some way every episode.
It's like the showrunners know they do character development best, but struggle when it comes to action, so they get the action out of the way to get back to the characters. I don't mean to say that the action scenes aren't great. The fights are very well done and well animated. I mean that the show can't seem to develop overarching storylines without having the resolution take less than half of an episode.
Does anyone else feel like that, where the pacing in terms of overall plot feels a bit rushed?

There's a "Because we can" attitude there...from the network.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. If I had to sum it up in a cheesy way, it feels like the show wants to have its Slice of Life and eat it too.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Characterization is the whole reason I watch Steven U. Starting with Steven himself. He could have been a blank slate or a Standardized Leader Cheerful Child, but he's got so much personality, and flair, and emotion...
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I didn't mean to imply that I just watch the show waiting for more action. I just think that the show is currently in between two much more interesting shows: A show about a renegade alien building (and fighting in) a resistance against her own home planet to save Earth, and a show about said alien's son taking up the mantle when the home planet comes back, and building the resistance up again from scratch.
If SU either didn't have that complex and interesting backstory to Homeworld, Rose and the Gems, or didn't have the imposing threat of Homeworld eventually coming back to finish the job, the show could have a full character focus without feeling like the really interesting stuff either already happened or is too far in the future to matter.
At least that's how I feel.

I'm saying that I'd be fine with what the show is if the universe (heh) that it exists in didn't have so much more going on in the past and (potentially) in the future.
I wasn't disappointed with the Animal Crossing movie because I expected more from it. I am a bit disappointed in Steven Universe for what it chooses to focus on out of all that it implies happened and will happen.
"The cruelest thing you can do to an artist is tell them their work is flawless when it isn't." -Ben "Yahtzee" CroshawI wouldn't say Steven was abandoned. What about Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, and Greg?
Stop presuming other people's feelings.
Personally, I like the show exactly where it is, with the mystery and legacy of the previous generation's backstory being progressively unraveled and owned by the new one.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. The show's mystery is best left explained in little bits...kind of like how Adventure Time does it.
The events of the past are interesting...but the focus on a strange development called Steven is also interesting and slice of life stuff is interesting.

That's relevant because voice actress.
Note that while Steven and the harem are both getting power bid ups, Steven is shown to remain the alpha dog.
Example: Ocean Gem where Lapis holds back the three and a half aunts easily, until Steven dismisses her creations with a single move.
From a storytelling perspective this will make the harem's failure to seize Steven back by force once he becomes a pawn of Homeworld understandable. He's just that strong and he'll have extra power from HW backing him up. That's when Rose will save the day.

So which one is the latest episode that's officially out?
