Gems can't evolve like Earth animals, what with being made instead of born.

Those virus bots stick em in the ground and then they parasite off the planet. So they may feed, but they don't reproduce the same way.

I want to know more about those machines though. What that "junk" is that they put into the ground...

What type of environment must they have lived in to evolve to how they are now?

Maybe they just got poofed a lot by the dangers in their world until they learned to be smarter-er.

[up][up]What is the natural?

Peridot did specifically use the word designed when she was describing the Gems. Not evolved.

Oh really when?

Evolution works by slow mutation, but all gems of a type are (allegedly) the same.

Well, love can change them. tongue

It's entirely possible for Gems to have evolved naturally out of the right type of chemical composition in crystalline structures. Gem Drills very easily could just inject the right mixture into the surrounding soil, creating and incubating the Gem out of the surrounding materials.

Probably. Homeworld learns from the rest of the universe and then adapts their tactics and their technology.

But in their early days, something must have happened to a small set of rocks to grant them physical forms and a strong urge to conquer other planets.

Conquering wouldn't necessarily be genetic. It was our culture that made us Humans do it.

But then wasn't it genetics that made us develop culture? tongue Most other animals don't do that, at least nothing humans recognize as culture. I guess monkeys have their customs, but they're way smarter than other animals too.

Gems are uncharacteristically smart for rocks. And they're full of MAGIC. Which I guess is their genetics.

Unless there is actually DNA in those gemstones...

The moment they learned they could make more gems, they couldn't stop.

The planet got over-populated and they had to conquer planets in order to satisfy their need to keep making more and more gems...and have more places for gems to live, and more places to grow more gems, and it's a never-ending cycle.

Colonization is sexy.

The gems have a cultural need to keep making more gems. They feel upward toward their Diamonds, not downward toward their progeny. I suppose there is some pride in making new gems, but they don't really seem to love the new ones.

We need to stop thinking about Gems in the same way we think about Humans. They don't have DNA, but they are alive, conscious, and there are differences between the different types of Gems. Evolving naturally out of minerals in the ground and developing a culture aimed towards conquest over millions of years (considering how long they live, I wouldn't surprise me if their culture's evolution is WAY slower than ours) sounds entirely plausible, and I would be far more interested in learning about the great Diamond dynasty over hundreds of millennia than to learn that they basically have no history because they were artificially created by something else.

@Pushover: "I would be far more interested in learning about the great Diamond dynasty over hundreds of millennia than to learn that they basically have no history because they were artificially created by something else."

I don't think that being artificial creations and having a long history are mutually exclusive. After all, in some Transformers continuities, the titular robots were constructed millions of years ago and plenty of stuff happened between then and now.

Also, I feel that comparisons between gems and humans are inevitable when gems decided that the humanoid form was the best one for day-to-day activity, looooong before Homo sapiens even existed.

Gems probably need fingers for precision handling in their machines; Peridot meanwhile had limb enhancers because she was assigned to use gem tech that was already built for her.

Though I'd imagine that an even more advantageous form would be more octopoidian...more limbs and greater mobility. ;p

Just because they're rocks it shouldn't mean that their physical forms have to be solid.

So you're saying homeworld's history is just one big Me's a Crowd episode, where they never learned the moral at the end and kept going? lol

But I'd find it hard to believe that beings with holographic bodies, projected from a gem at the core of their being, evolved naturally.

Amethyst can make herself look like Pearl, but it isn't her "default" shape. And she's deformed anyway.

The template for each gem must be planned out beforehand, but possible to corrupt in some way...

They must have some reverence for the female humanoid form for some reason...

I kind of doubt that much of this will be explored, as long as the show only focuses on Steven's inheritance of his mother's conflict with her former planet.

Unless they ever go to Homeworld and take time to learn their history, but at that point he'll have become his own gem.
