I don't imagine that either of them is going to be feeling very good upon de-fusing. fighting with all your will to subdue your fusion partner and keep them stuck in an underwater prison is not, I think, very good for the mental health of both parties. I figure Lapis might eventually be ok though, since at least she still has Steven. He's probably the best thing that's happened to her in thousands of years.

How was the Cluster created, again? Do we know?

[up][up] I'm sure they're fine under the sea. While up on the land they work all day on the drill, out in sun slaving away, they're just devoting full time to floating.

It's made out of gem shards, i.e parts from gems that were broken if I'm not mistaken.

[up][up]If they were floating, they'd be totally cheesed sooner than necessary.

I believe Unknown is actually just making a reference to the Little Mermaid but I could be wrong :'v

I think there might be some merit to the idea that the cluster is alive somehow.
It's clearly alive, to use the term broadly, but I guess you meant something more like "the cluster is sapient".

It's made out of gem shards, i.e parts from gems that were broken if I'm not mistaken.
Yes, but I think Karkat was more wondering the process—how they were fused together or put so deep below the Earth.

In that case, Peridot didn't go into that much detail. She just explained the cluster is made up of gem shards.

Judging from how the shards look at the conjoined area, they were most likely melded together using intense heat.

Actually, I just wanted to know if the Cluster was made of Gem shards - I was pretty sure that was the case, but I couldn't remember if it was ever actually stated.

In that case, I think it's probably alive, yeah.

And/or extreme pressure.

(U-U):Yes. Intense and Extreme. Such an epic combination is required to keep those shards "fused"...that must've taken 10000 years.

Peridot: These are the early attempts at artificial fusion.

Steven: That's a lot of Gem Shards...

Peridot: We were growing them here at this very site, but these were just prototypes for the final product. A singular, giant, artificial fusion, comprised of millions of Gem Shards. The Cluster.

Steven: Peridot, you're saying... there's a giant, mutant Gem the size of the Earth under us right now?

Peridot: Oh, no, when it forms, it'll be much, much bigger than the Earth. Right now, it lies dormant, incubating in the Earth's core, but when it emerges and takes its physical form, it will destroy the planet.

I'm expecting her Gem to be swapped with the moon and for there to just be a humongous woman orbiting Earth for the next few seasons.

Its form when it emerges is supposed to be bigger than the earth the earth would orbit it. And die.

Yeah, but the Gem's Hard Light bodies automatically shift mass to accommodate the gravity of whatever they're standing on. Presumably, given that she's not on anything, the Cluster's body would be weightless and the only mass would be her Gem itself, which, if the diagram we saw is accurate, is about as large as the moon.

Who's saltier: Lapis or Pearl?

She's not though.

She's spent more time being angry and vengeful than she has literally any other emotion.

She's really fucking salty at everyone that isn't Steven.

The gem clusters are created by putting the gem shards deep underground where the heat and pressure merges them.
