If they were floating, they'd be totally cheesed sooner than necessary.
Judging from how the shards look at the conjoined area, they were most likely melded together using intense heat.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Actually, I just wanted to know if the Cluster was made of Gem shards - I was pretty sure that was the case, but I couldn't remember if it was ever actually stated.
In that case, I think it's probably alive, yeah.
Oh God! Natural light!(U-U):Yes. Intense and Extreme. Such an epic combination is required to keep those shards "fused"...that must've taken 10000 years.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.Peridot: These are the early attempts at artificial fusion.
Steven: That's a lot of Gem Shards...
Peridot: We were growing them here at this very site, but these were just prototypes for the final product. A singular, giant, artificial fusion, comprised of millions of Gem Shards. The Cluster.
Steven: Peridot, you're saying... there's a giant, mutant Gem the size of the Earth under us right now?
Peridot: Oh, no, when it forms, it'll be much, much bigger than the Earth. Right now, it lies dormant, incubating in the Earth's core, but when it emerges and takes its physical form, it will destroy the planet.
Its form when it emerges is supposed to be bigger than the earth the earth would orbit it. And die.
Yes wonderful. ![]()

Yeah, but the Gem's Hard Light bodies automatically shift mass to accommodate the gravity of whatever they're standing on. Presumably, given that she's not on anything, the Cluster's body would be weightless and the only mass would be her Gem itself, which, if the diagram we saw is accurate, is about as large as the moon.

I don't imagine that either of them is going to be feeling very good upon de-fusing. fighting with all your will to subdue your fusion partner and keep them stuck in an underwater prison is not, I think, very good for the mental health of both parties. I figure Lapis might eventually be ok though, since at least she still has Steven. He's probably the best thing that's happened to her in thousands of years.
