it's interesting that she seems to use sound to control the ship. we haven't seen that before with gem technology, have we?

Wow, Steven's really gotten control of his healing powers.
It's not as impressive as raising the (recently) dead, but notable that he can regenerate entire missing body part (at least if the organism was capable of regenerating them eventually).
it's interesting that she seems to use sound to control the ship. we haven't seen that before with gem technology, have we?
The closest I can recall is the warp whistle (and the mirror, but that's not really the technology responding to sound).
I'm waiting for a joke at the end where Ronaldo steps out of the lighthouse, because he'd been hiding there the entire time.

Rewatch, Day 42

    What's Your Problem
  • Like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, this episode title officially lacks punctuation. Listings still tend to add one.
  • It must be inconvenient for Sapphire to cry directly into her own mouth.
  • "There, there. It's going to be okay. She's going to come back! She's got to come back! If she doesn't then... then, there would be no more Garnet. And... what on Earth would we do without Garnet?" Ah, the classic logic of "That would be so bad, I'm sure it can't happen."
  • Pearl and Sapphire are quite a pair. Apparently, Pearl + Ruby = nervous mess, Pearl + Sapphire = sobbing mess, Sapphire + Ruby = cool as a cucumber.
  • Amethyst insists Steven play video games with her. I know she's trying to get Steven to relax, but I'd feel way too "in the middle" of things to enjoy video games.
  • "He was like all the way out on Brooding Hill, which is totally out of our delivery radius." She better mean that because there's no road going up to it (even if Greg's drove his van there), because I'd be pissed if a pizza place wouldn't deliver within sight of the store.
  • "She must've been crying because she was like really red." Humans notice gems' weird skin tones, they just have their own ideas explaining them.
  • I believe the helicopter chase is the only action sequence in (or rather above) the residential areas of Beach City, away from the cliff and shore.

    The Question
  • "Back when I emerged, the first thing I did was get crammed together with a bunch of other Rubies!" This fits with the bits of the timeline visible in the artbook—it showed Ruby and Sapphire's lives before "The Answer" as being short and/or uneventful.
  • Steven made me realize some Crystal Gems came to know fusions that ceased to exist because their parts split up.
  • Did Greg take Ruby to the same plain the Cool Ranch from "Gemcation" is on?
  • Even if she took a bunch of breaks, Amethyst must have been testing her shapeshifting endurance to be a horse that long.
  • "Look at our friend Lonesome Lasso. They call him that 'cause he's lonesome!" That's why they don't call him the "Lone Lasso".
  • "I've been waiting to kiss your cute face!" Every point before this, I think it was just Ruby doing the kissing.

    Made of Honor
  • "Oh... just ten. Hm." If you count up all the guests in the audience and group them by household, you actually get nine invitations. I'm not sure if the tenth was for Greg or the Off Colors—the latter couldn't make it, but ended up only three or so days off.
  • "I just tried to shatter you." Bismuth already forgot how time works in the bubble.
  • "Tiger's Eye! Little Larimar... Beryl, Serpentine, and ohh... Biggs?!" Odd that "Beryl" is an individual, when beryls in real life are a category of gemstone (which includes many disparate gems, like Rubies and Sapphires). Or is she a fusion named for a gem type, like Garnet?
  • Holy crap, Bismuth sliced Biggs in half. (You can even see her splitting apart a bit before poofing.)
  • "Only a diamond could do damage like this." That's an odd conclusion to come to when no one knew the diamonds had that power—not even the diamonds.
  • It's great how Bismuth's scream goes just a little longer than you think.
  • "You could do one of your signature catchphrases!" Bismuth is just the Fonz of gems.

Ruby being the primary initiator of romantic action fits with both her and Sapphire's character, imo. she feels like she has to take action, while Sapphire knows the future and feels more comfortable just letting events play out.

It keeps bugging me the way Garnet sees Hearty coming in Future Vision like that, given how the show notes she visualizes based on things she's aware of and probably shouldn't be able to use it to foresee stuff that comes out of nowhere like that.

Future Vision has always been inconsistent about if Garnet can predict things she is physically distant from. Remember when Jasper harassing some corrupted gems in the middle of nowhere let Garnet see them, but not Jasper? ("Garnet sensed some corrupted Gem activity in these woods.")

[up][up] I dunno. It's what everyone else is calling her.

[up][up][up][up] It's an excellent way of role reversing them, especially since both her and Sapphire's episodes were in part about exploring the two of them in ways they haven't been before. Before that point Sapphire was always the one fully confident in their relationship - the one forward with accepting where they were and keeping them centered. But ultimately, she never really thought hard about what it meant to be them either.

That Ruby is the one to maturely reevaluate their relationship and discovers the way to recement it in a way that feels real speaks to how unique both of their perspectives are, despite our expectations.

Rewatch, Day 43

    Reunited

Act 1

Act 2

  • "What's the Cluster?!" People tell Bismuth what they tell Amethyst—jack all.
  • The Cluster broke Peridot's tractor.
  • "Everyone, head to your designated shelters." Judging by that evacuation diagram Nanefua was holding up, the shelters are either on the edge of town, or a ways inland.
  • To be honest, I would not go to the shelter, I'd take my chances watching. The arm fight seemed to start so fast, the people may have seen in even on their way to.
  • "It's in control of itself." Odd that Steven still calls the Cluster "it", even as he starts saying "Cluster" like it's a name.
  • Only Connie and Bismuth aren't annoyed at Greg's idea to use "the ol' universe charm".
  • Connie was completely beneath Blue Diamond's attention. If Lion hadn't caught her, she could have died from the fall without Blue even noticing.
  • The barn drop was primarily a means to give Lapis about twenty seconds to explain herself.
  • Lion actually roars for once in a while, but Baker still isn't credited. I guess it's an archive clip?
  • Bismuth's Per-jectile was oddly effective, but seems uncharacteristically endangering. If Blue wasn't wailed on the second she got Peridot off her face, she could have well crushed Peridot in her hand, gem and all.
  • Steven naturally told the "Cluster" away too soon, though it probably couldn't stay longer. I wonder if they're talked since.
  • Yellow Diamond lifted the ship finger off Blue Diamond. Could she have been stuck under it otherwise?

Act 3

  • Lion does not get a statue. Can Steven not psychically connect to animals, even sapient ones? (I mean besides the other kind of link he has to Lion.) Greg doesn't either, but he presumably just ran far away again.
  • "Don't get shattered!" -> "I can do this!" I've heard a mantra should always be phrased in the positive.
  • Yellow and Blue can ignore everyone else mid-fight without much consequence. Maybe the Crystal Gems knew they might be listening to Steven, maybe their attacks were bouncing off harmlessly.
  • Lion is gone after Steven wakes up.
  • Charlyne Yi is credited as voicing "Rudy". To make things more embarrassing, Ruby hasn't made a speaking role since.

    Legs From Here to Homeworld
  • Greg was looking at Steven when he woke up, but is gone when Blue Diamond is holding him. I can't imagine why he'd leave—even if Blue recognized him, it's not like she was going to care what they did at the Zoo.
  • Gems can produce quite a lot of water. It's presumably Hard Light like the rest of their forms, but do they have any "light water" internally?
  • "Oh, geez, you don't know what a mom is." I'd say Blue might, but given she didn't seem to know the concept of starvation, she probably doesn't understand human biology at all.
  • "How did you even survive?! We blasted the planet and obliterated every Gem on its surface!" Gotta wonder how how they could expect to physically destroy gems, and thus their gemstones, without damaging any objects on Earth.
  • "Gently, Yellow." That's the first time Blue acted motherly to someone besides Pink.
  • I wonder if Yellow or Blue's healing powers could (at least theoretically) work on non-gems like Pink's do.
  • Amethyst didn't seem to know who White Diamond was at all. Did she even know the diamonds existed before Peridot told Steven about them?
  • Lion is suddenly back in the desert, probably because they needed him to find Rose's crap shack.
  • "This is going to be a diplomatic mission!" "And I'll be with her the whole time!" Connie's parents seem to really trust Pearl.
  • Quite a Lion face.
  • "Let me put this in Earth terms for you. You're about to enter the lions' den." Bismuth knows some stuff about animals.
  • Laser pants. "It's a good look for you, Steven!"
  • Doug and Priyanka are less phased at the lift-off than Bismuth.
  • We still don't know how White Diamond knew to gather the crowd.
  • "As for this latest little game of yours." Does she call it "little" because it even six millennia is a small fraction of Pink's life so far, or because White doesn't really care about time even in a relative sense?
  • "Oh, stars!" "Thank the stars it's over!" Funny how even the diamonds refer to the cosmos in quasi-religious terms.

Interesting note: Of all the episodes that aired in 2018, all of them but "Reunited", "Familiar", and "Together Alone" were copyright 2017. Yes, that means "Legs From Here to Homeworld" was finished after the episode that aired before it.

I'm guessing the long delays airing season five were because they got some extra time for certain episodes, so they were finished significantly later than most of the season. The last couple episodes coming out really close to air date might explain all the typos in the credits.

Amethyst just looks short in that image...due to being the same height.

Not that they weren't ever the same height before then.

Also, Peridot has said the word "die" before, not sure what episode though.

It was definitely before being captured though.

Totally forgot that.

Peridot had barely talked to anyone on Earth at that point, so it’s pretty clear gems all understand death outside of shattering, they just don’t refer to it that way often.

Maybe they use "shatter" as a replacement for the word "kill". As in, shattering is for the action, but death is still recognized as the state of being after being shattered.
