Rewatch Day 22

    Steven Floats
  • This is the third of four episodes so far written and storyboarded by one person, this time Paul Villeco.
  • They moved the stuff with Greg's van, but get back into the house through the warp?
  • Sadie is one of the only humans aware the Crystal Gems save the world, even if she's quiet about it.
  • The "workplace safety lawsuit" is a good call back, although it's a bit disturbing to ponder if Lars and Sadie had a significant chance of getting suddenly vaporized. One hopes the lawsuit was thrown out because Big Donut's facilities were rightly ruled not responsible—it's in Beach City, so perhaps magic was involved.
  • That's a very funny closeup of Sadie, though it's odd how her scar and the parts of her nose besides the nostrils aren't visible.
  • POV Break: We hear an announcement in a plane Steven floats by from the outside.
  • There are several jokes that seem more bizarre than usual: The plane announcement, the boat sitting on Steven's chest, Garnet breaking into a car, Steven's imagination, Steven pulling the screen up like a window.
  • The scale of these sky scenes is nuts; all of Beach City is a small portion of Steven's view, then he can see Amethyst walking out of the house.
  • POV Break: We hear the gems on the ground even when Steven can't.
  • Molisee's the one who draws both of Amethyst's eyes uncovered the most, but Villeco evidently does a lot as well.
  • Good thing Kofi doesn't lock his phone (even if he does lock his car).
  • S&P is apparently OK with jokes where someone kills an animal if it's an accident.
  • Steven probably could have survived terminal velocity, especially on sand.

    Drop Beat Dad
  • This was the point when Steven's physical strength became way more explicit—they go out of their way to show it off compared to regular humans twice.
  • There are certain kinds of jokes I especially associate with certain storyboarders. Yellowtail's fish sticking out of his briefcase is the kind of low-key absurdism I think of Lamar Abrams doing.
  • Old Marty is the most bizarre-looking motherfucker, and I'm not sure how to feel about it.
  • Awful as he remains, Marty does seem mildly less sociopathic—the panicked way he gave those excuses even when Sour Cream wasn't pressuring him sounds like actual guilt. He's also gotten enough professionalism to actually set up a show instead of spending all his time partying with the locals.
  • Marty causes star wipes with his very presence.
  • "Marty here, talk to me. Yeah, I know I called you." One of two jokes that are funny because of how easy they are to miss.
  • A mural on a water tower is quite impressive advertising. Wonder how long it stayed up.
  • Steven is quite charmed by someone accepting his free labor.
  • The other missable joke is a crowd member seeing Marty and saying "Wooh! It's some guy!" It's clearly Zachary Steel's voice, and though he's only credited as Ronaldo, it sounds like a different character (more like David).
  • With Sour Cream, Marty brought guacamole.
  • That drawing of a passed-out Ian JQ has remains his online avatar for over three years.
  • First time watching, I was afraid Sour Cream was going to feel obligated to appreciated Yellowtail more just by comparison, but at least it got Yellowtail to be more supportive.
  • Greg was still "Star Child" to Marty, until he was mad and he just became "Universe". Oddly, he could have expected Greg to change his name back to Demayo.
  • Vidalia has a unique outfit just for a crowd scene.

    Mr. Greg
  • Young Marty is a treasure of a dirtbag.
  • Greg doesn't even acknowledge the implication that Marty had been plagiarizing him for over a decade.
  • Though Greg and Pearl agree Rose would have loved the Pepe's Burgers commercial, if it's because she likes food or just the song and little cartoon is unspecified.
  • Despite all the other alternate names, Brooklyn and the Bowery have the same names.
  • Even after packing it away, Steven pulled Sanic back out.
  • "Just you, me, Pearl, and don't forget Mom." That remains the most baffling joke to me.
  • Going off the business card, the waiters probably assumed "Greg" was a surname.
  • Greg gets fancy, but still doesn't get a haircut—just a big ponytail.
  • I'm a sucker for all the times a person is carried around as if they were an object.
  • True extravagance: swim suits. (Either the hotel has speedy on-site dry-cleaning or Steven and Greg got multiple suits made.)
  • "And those fountains I found wasteful are actually quite tasteful. This city's got its charm, unlike that termite-ridden barn." You really get the feeling Pearl would be more into Earth art if she got out and experienced it first-hand.
  • Cleverly-timed head movements let us see Pearl from 360 degrees without her looking exactly forward for any notable amount of time.
  • "Singin' a song don't cost nothin'. Or was it palling around don't cost nothin'?" "I'm surprised you remember any of it." It's especially surprising given Pearl wasn't there the first time it was sung.

    Too Short to Ride
  • Peridot doesn't mind Steven sticking a bow in her hair.
  • Greg gave up the tablet because of "something about oversaturation of media being a plague to one's mind", but is OK with Steven or one of his friends keeping it.
  • Gotta wonder if Peridot ever got around to researching Earth on the internet or just kept posting to no one on social media.
  • "I really, really like this, but it's a shame it doesn't come attached to your body." One wonders if Peridot could make a direct interface like the one she controlled her ship with.
  • There is a high chance Peridot learned the meaning of "hang out" from Camp Pining Hearts.
  • The Appalachian roller coaster sudden has a fairly high height requirement, but was first described as a "kiddie coaster".
  • A funhouse mirror shows Peridot with a much larger upper body. There's a noticeable resemblance to what may well be Era 1 Peridots.
  • Did Peridot get to go on any rides?
  • Half the Grey Alien plushes have gemstone. May just be a thing humans unconsciously associate with aliens.
  • Onion with the burning cotton candy is a temporary throwback to the ridiculous psycho the show's mostly avoided characterizing him as after "Onion Trade".
  • "It's a little sister." The characters are fully aware of Peridot's resemblance to an LGM, they just choose to rarely call attention to it.
  • Steven's clothes
  • Peridot could have saved herself a lot of pain if she was upfront as to why she was sure couldn't shapeshift, but it may have been wishful thinking.
  • "Uh, okay. Maybe we just have to activate it manually. You grab her feet. I'll grab the arms." "I think I just heard a crack" Her... bones?
  • Lucky the rings were metal. You'd think they'd be rubber or plastic to keep from scratching/chipping the bottles.

That was the start of Steven deliberately reminding both Greg and Pearl of Rose to force them to reconcile their differences.

the "i think i just heard a crack" thing is quite strange, considering there's no way, or at least no reason, for peridot to have bones before reforming. was it referring to her gem? i don't think that makes much more sense. are Era 2 gems so structurally unsound that their gems would break that easily?

it was probably just a silly gag that they didn't put a lot of thought into.

Good enough.

are Era 2 gems so structurally unsound that their gems would break that easily?
That would make even less sense—they were pulling Peridot by her limbs, and her gemstone in on her head.

Rewatch, Day 23

    The New Lars
  • Sometimes Lars does make Sadie laugh.
  • I forgot we totally do see Lars' butt almost three years after "Frybo". (There's some odd perspective going on with how the head is reflected.)
  • Given the implications of when Steven woke up, Lars may have been wishing he hung out with Sadie the night before.
  • Villeco and/or Molisee seem to make the raunchiest jokes, between that and "Will you help me into my birthday suit?".
  • Lars likes Aquaticus Baticus.
  • Is that a computer tower or game console in the corner?
  • Lars sleeps under a bunch of skylights. Either he's OK with getting up at sunup or is a really heavy sleeper.
  • Barriga family pictures: Baby Lars (with proto mohawk and floppy ears), grandma, old cat?
  • Feels weird how they suddenly brought up Lars being in school, especially since it was later established to still be summer.
  • "Wow. He didn't even swear." That's the second time it's implied Lars can be pretty foulmouthed when not around Steven. I've long wondered if he ended up confusing the Off Colors and refused to define his words.
  • One less voice: Sour Cream follows Buck and Jenny around but doesn't talk.
  • Why did Sadie put a robe on top of shirt and sweatpants?
  • "Well, if it ain't the human boomerang — always coming back to me."
  • Why does Sadie have a movie like Fangs of Love? Did she buy it by mistake?
  • You can really see that between Sadie's two friends, she likes Steven better, but relates more to Lars.
  • Sadie doesn't just kick Steven's door down, she kicks it in half. (See the way the handle side of the door hangs like it's on a hinge? That's what happens when animators have to follow things super literally.)
  • When Steven exits you mind, your eyeballs roll back.
  • "How did I get here?" Does Lars recognize Steven's house?
  • Tearing an apology card in half is a very Lars thing to do, but he's otherwise remarkably forgiving.
  • "Everyday in Beach City is weird. That's why I hate it here."

    Beach City Drift
  • "This baby's a Dondai Supremo from the era of frosted tips, mood rings, slap bracelets..." I'm just getting the joke that Greg talks about "the" era, but those are from a different decades each.
  • That's a nice policewoman design.
  • "You just look like another guy we know." Connie, Steven got Kevin's attention by referencing him by name.
  • The return of sharp-tooth Steven.
  • "But we're kids. Kids can't drive. That's against the law." It's odd that Connie's focusing on the law when Stevonnie clearly can't drive legally either, they're just less likely to get caught on it.
  • Ronaldo says the car is a '96 model, which is one of few specific years given.
  • It is really distracting how Stevonnie and Kevin can talk to each other in completely different cars.
  • POV Break: During the race, we see and hear Ronaldo, Jenny, and others at the bottom of the mountain.
  • Kevin's dash reads "L/100km" (presumably measuring fuel economy), but the driver's seat in on the left. So either the metric system is more popular in the US, or it's an important from a Japan with right-handed traffic.
  • Satanic Kevin head.
  • I've long wondered if Connie is wearing her dad's jacket (here and again in "Lars of the Stars") or just one with the same design. Stevonnie calls it "dad's jacket" in one of the shorts, but why would she do that? Wouldn't she rather have her own that fits better?
  • "I was rooting for you, Dondai!" That's real encouraging to root for the car.

    Restaurant Wars
  • The boardwalk was saved by super-illegal business practices.
  • Ironically, this is one of the few times the food sellers look like they have enough business to run.
  • Ronaldo piggybacks off Fish-Stew Pizza's wi-fi.
  • If Jenny's working the counter, Fish-Stew Pizza presumably can't deliver.
  • "No way! We can't do this because I... have a girlfriend." "Where's she at, though?" The race you saw a few days ago.
  • "You two are only hugging, right?" Kofi, still more lenient than Doug.
  • Fryman punches his palm only as a prelude to prayer.
  • Remarkably patient of Onion to wait outside the door instead of breaking in.
  • One less voice: Garnet only claps (even though the main four actors are credited regardless of if they appear or not).

    Kiki's Pizza Delivery Service
  • Amazon lists this episode's title as "Kiki's Pizza Service Delivery"
  • On-foot only delivery has to be pretty limiting.
  • "I'm taking some 'me' time." Doesn't Steven usually eat alone?
  • I have to give some credit for calling back to such a non-sequitur as Dogcopter meowing.
  • Cheese Jenny's voice is hilarious.

That Dove short screen of Stevonnie is making me wonder—is Stevonnie gonna feel awkward calling Greg, Doug, or Priyanka "dad/mom"? (When they're outside of a dream, I mean.)

Is that a computer tower or game console in the corner?

Since it's hooked up to the TV, probably a game console.

I've long wondered if Connie is wearing her dad's jacket (here and again in "Lars of the Stars") or just one with the same design. Stevonnie calls it "dad's jacket" in one of the shorts, but why would she do that? Wouldn't she rather have her own that fits better?

"Legs From Here to Homeworld" and "Change Your Mind" show Doug not wearing it while Connie wears it, so it's definitely the same jacket.

is Stevonnie gonna feel awkward calling Greg, Doug, or Priyanka "dad/mom"?

This is why I want an episode about Doug and Priyanka finding out about Stevonnie! ...Do they even know yet?

It's a can they've kicked down the road for over four years, but I still hope they cover in some significant way.

Steven and Connie already kept it secret for like a year-and-a-half in-show, so another two (offscreen) years wouldn't be implausible or remove the impact—Connie's parent would probably still be shocked if they found out when Connie was twenty.

I usually like when a Time Skip like this gradually reveals the significant stuff that happened during, but that might be incompatible for the format of Steven Universe—I think the longest Steven's hid anything significant from the audience are the bulk of "Open Book" and "Mr. Greg".

I think the movie is well-known enough that even a child with a decent general knowledge of pop culture would have heard of it. The same goes for “Marble Madness” and “Now We’re Only Falling Apart”.

Now “Future Boy Zoltron”, “Last One Out of Beach City”, and “Your Mother and Mine”—those are some old, obscure references. That second one in particular gave a lot a people the completely wrong idea, even if they were exactly the right age.

Rewatch, Day 24

    Monster Reunion
  • Pearl was very sensible to not let Steven rub his hand on a broken plate, especially since it wouldn't have worked on the plate anyway.
  • Don't slap people's bare eyeballs, Steven.
  • "I guess it'll take more than a kiss to heal damage from the Diamonds." It's pretty clearly Steven already knew the Diamonds corrupted the gems, the question is when did he? Presumably after Peridot explained who the Diamonds were, unless Pearl and Garnet just mentioned it was Homeworld before then.
  • "Steven, I'm impressed with your ability to bring the Centipeetle this far, but it's time to let her rest again." Garnet, are you crazy? Centi was not acting even slightly aggressive.
  • "Okay, Centi. Oh, I guess that's not really your name. What is your name?" Pearl or Garnet could have easily told she was a Nephrite. Though Steven didn't respond to her saying her name in "Legs From Here to Homeworld", so many they did by then.
  • Thought balloons.
  • The Homeworld emblem already took off Pink Diamond. So the war probably didn't end too soon after Pink's apparent shattering.
  • We never did find out if Steven learned to read or write in gem script. (Ironically, Steven Sugar was the one who made up the symbols.)

    Alone at Sea
  • Does Steven wear those shorts in any other episode?
  • Lapis doesn't know what a handshake is.
  • "Water is part of who you are." Lapis apparently did get used to water again.
  • "You can't let one bad experience take that away from you." "It was more than one." Technically it was one very long experience.
  • (Snort laughs)
  • "What do you say, Captain Lazuli?" Lazuli isn't really a last name, but it still gets used like one.
  • "I'm not putting that on my body." Lapis seems to think Greg is kinda gross.
  • Crying Breakfast Friends-brand orange juice.
  • Lapis likes sleeping, but not drinking.
  • No one can ever set a big mass of water down gently.
  • Where was Jasper following from? The shore? Did she find them in the middle of the ocean?

    Greg the Babysitter
  • "Wow, two customers!" Beach City must have very low rent for a coastal town. Especially after all the property damage costs.
  • Greg apparently wanted to buy Rose fries, so I guess she did eat with Greg sometimes.
  • How did Vidalia get a two-story house even when she was a single mother who'd only recently gotten a job? It an inheritance or something?
  • Baby Brian Posehn is still the best.
  • "Lousy twelve-year old." I was thinking of what existing character (now about 27-year-old) could have possibly been Sour Cream's original babysitter, but Jamie is the only known character who could between the age of 20 and 35.
  • "Where's Sour Cream?! I thought you were gonna watch him for me!" "I watched him. I watched him climb all the way up there." Never forgot that time when Rose Quartz was Milhouse.
  • The park is open, yet no one is attending to the Ferris wheel.
  • Greg never took back that shirt, so it could just be sitting around in Vidalia's house.
  • The previous owner of It's a Wash gave Greg the job even though he showed up the interview wearing flip-flops and shirtless. Was he desperate or impressed?
  • I wonder if we'll ever get any idea who Greg bought the car wash from or how he afforded it.

    Gem Hunt
  • Garnet could see those gems moving around, but can't track Jasper at all.
  • Pearl leaves some hilariously tiny footprints.
  • Connie's apocalyptic scenario is a bit out of date. People have long since realized fossil fuels would destroy the environment before running dry.
  • The way Connie keeps saying "humanoid" footprints is appropriate, but still kind of funny.
  • "Who's that?" Connie really should have been given a good enough description of Jasper to know her by site. Hell, Pearl could have shown her directly with her hologram.
  • The first of two times someone just wrenches a gemstone out.
  • "Are your parents going to see this?" "My parents see all of my photos, ma'am." I wonder what Connie's parents think of Pearl by this point. Or what they'd think if they accidentally got shown Steven's picture of Jasper.

I mean, if Steven can "heal" a damaged teddy bear, I see no reason to doubt he could "heal" a broken plate.
He could potentially repair it, but wouldn't in this case. Steven's healing never really went away, it's just power by his empathy. It'll work on basically anything he knows to be living, but an inanimate object is more difficult. He could perceive MC Bear-Bear as a character, but not the Geode or Galaxy Warp.

Theoretically, he could repair any object, but he'd have to get very good at controlling his emotions—like if he thought of them as extensions of someone they would help.

Rewatch, Day 25

(I've realized I stayed with four-per-day longer than I should have to spread things evenly. For the remainder, I'll be doing 2 2/3 on average. I'm going to 2-2-4 for today and the next two to avoid splitting up "Bismuth" or the season finale arc.)

    Crack the Whip
  • Can't recall Steven making multiple shields at once again.
  • Playful times with deadly weapons.
  • Lion conveniently in the background throughout the episode.
  • Amethyst's trick is really disturbing from Sadie's perspective. Amethyst is thinking "I fooled her!" while Sadie could be thinking "I hope this bodysnatcher doesn't murder me, too."
  • Sadie's heard the Pepe's burgers theme. Now, was the commercial just released recently (despite Marty making it a long time ago) or did Greg really never notice the similarity despite it being well known in Beach City?
  • The return of boombox Amethyst.
  • "By Jove I guess you're right!" So that's where they got that line you'll hear in Save the Light a hundred times if you use Connie.
  • Amethyst just squeezes that monster till it poofed. Apparently, she learned something from the Slinker.
  • I think Amethyst got the closest any character got to being shattering (not counting a few cases where gems could have been obliterated at at once).
  • Jasper's reaction to Steven and Connie fusing is understated. "You Crystal Gems would even fuse with a human!?", as opposed to "How!?"
  • "I don't wanna hear anything you say, unless it's 'sorry'." Stevonnie will only be a very wholesome kind of intimidating.
  • Stevonnie maybe should have bubbled Amethyst to send her to the temple instead of just leaving her gem sitting around on the beach.
  • I remember being confused by the animation/directing of the action sequences (particularly how Stevonnie pounded Jasper into her mount) on my first time viewing, but it seems fine now.
  • "I guess she lives in the ocean now."
  • Gems can regenerate super fast without consequences so long as it's only for pacing, not dramatic purposes.
  • POV Break: Steven did not hear Amethyst say "You didn't need me at all."

    Steven vs. Amethyst
  • Pearl's bangs(?) stick up in Zuke's drawing from this point on.
  • The second round was about evading attacks, but Steven won even though Amethyst didn't get hit.
  • "Boomerang shield!" Steven did all kind of fancy stuff with his shield I completely forgot.
  • One fewer voice: Callison voices Lonely Blade this time even though Chris Jai Alex would return the next episode.
  • Amethyst is somewhat familiar with video games.
  • A rare shot in animation showing the moon while there's still daylight.
  • Amethyst's ponytail was a great addition I still wish we got more of.
  • Steven's shield has some serious cutting power.
  • Steven getting slammed into the ground and emerging from the rubble is a pretty major escalation of terms of his durability. This is the kid who got knocked out by a potato about a year earlier.
  • This is the first episode since "On the Run" to only have "featured voices" (i.e. only the main four actors). The other two before that were "Together Breakfast" and "The Test", and there hasn't been one since.

Jasper's reaction to Steven and Connie fusing is understated. "You Crystal Gems would even fuse with a human!?", as opposed to "How!?"

I think that Jasper doesn't know enough about humans to know just how impossible that should be.

Steven getting slammed into the ground and emerging from the rubble is a pretty major escalation of terms of his durability. This is the kid who got knocked out by a potato about a year earlier.

I've been watching the show under the assumption that Steven has been growing stronger, physically, over time. He definitely was not even close to comparable to Amethyst at the start of the show. The scene that sticks out in my mind the most is all three Crystal Gems leaping from the boardwalk back to the temple (or maybe not quite that far, but at least all leaping off screen), and Steven doing a pathetic normal jump to try and emulate them, which is a far cry from his super jumps later in the series.
