Huh. Guess it's been so long since we saw her that I forgot. Her last appearance was trying to attack Yellow Diamond, and Yellow poofed her before she could get a word out. Aside from that, her last appearance was... wait... was her last big appearance REALLY fighting Malachite?!

She was able to hold back Aquamarine's ship for a while in "I Am My Mom". She ultimately was stopped by Aquamarine's wand, but she did accomplish something.

[up][up][up] Yellow poofed Opal and Garnet. Alexandrite defused because she was overwhelmed by Blue's emotion powers.

Also, even when she was falling apart in "Fusion Cuisine", she still spoke with her voice, just layered with the Gems' voices depending on the one speaking.

Alexandrite hasn't spoken since "Super Watermelon Island", though we got a roar in "Reunited".

Since everyone in the CG has a room in the temple, does Obsidian have a room? Or Alexandrite? And how would they get in without destroying the house?

Yeah, presumably an Obsidian room would form if they could actually get them inside but only for as long as they were fused.

Did we ever get an answer on whether the Burning Room is officially Garnet's room? It kind of seems like it might be the exception in still existing when she unfuses, seeing as how nobody brings it up and storing the bubbled gems is important.

And it does still exist when she's unfused, we saw that when Steven got Bismuth for Ruby and Sapphire's wedding.

I don't think it is her room, because it not being her room would make the most sense. It is odd that we've never seen Garnet's room, though. Seems like kind of a small thing to reveal, but the next season should focus on the small things, so I'd be fine with seeing her room in season 6.

It is odd that we've never seen Garnet's room, though.
At one point it was planned that Garnet wouldn't have her room, and Steven would find out she was a fusion when Sapphire and Ruby went to separate rooms. Many relevant things have since changed, obviously.

It's actually been extremely rare to see any of the gems' rooms besides Rose's and the one with the bubbles. "Together Breakfast" was an intro, we saw Pearl's again in "Secret Team", and Amethyst's in "Reformed", but I think that's it.

Podcast stuff:
  • They thought of giving Pearl's new outfit a scarf, mostly so Rainbow Quartz 2 would have it, but decided she "looked like a kid detective" with it.
  • Another new form idea for Garnet was a clear visor.
  • Colin Howard came up with the initial drawings of Rainbow Quartz 2's design, and the basic idea was "if Mary Poppins and Bert (Dick Van Dyke) fused".
  • It would be appropriate to call Rainbow Quartz 2 "he", Obsidian 2 or Sunstone "she", or any of them "they".
  • Rainbow Quartz 2's voice is based on that of his voice actor's grandmother.
  • White Diamond's character was largely inspired by the mirror scene in the 1946 animated educational short The Story of Menstruation. Another influence was Hedy Lamarr in Ziegfeld Girl. The Diamonds court in general was inspired by the works of Nell Brinkley, Busby Berkeley, and others from "this era where the idea of person as a beautiful piece of furniture was very appealing". (Similar influences were cited for the visuals of The Zoo.)
  • Pink Steven was drawn to look as close as possible to his model sheet (minus any expression) to "remove any personality" and leave you with a "default Steven".
  • Steven being separated from his gem was another idea that was moved far back and into a much more dramatic context. At first it was just going to be part of "Giant Woman" (at that point planned to be episode ten).
  • Ian Jones-Quartey boarded Steven fusing with the other Crystal Gems. He had always been the one sure the four of them forming Obsidian could work, and basically had to board it himself to show it.
  • Jones-Quartey likes to think the longer a gem spends corrupted, the more it affects their healed form, thus why Jasper looks less changed than the others.
  • He also wanted Sunstone to be formed while the mech stomped on them so Garnet and Steven really would fight a giant foot.
  • The song "Change Your Mind" was not originally written for the show at all. It was something Rebecca Sugar wrote for herself when she was frustrated with the network's resistance to Ruby and Sapphire getting married.
  • What little they'll say about the show to come is that "Change Your Mind" was a very definitive point for Steven's character, and because of that "everything will be different" afterward.

Didn't Nephrite basically look completely fine after she was healed, though? I guess Jasper mutated in a more complicated process than what was probably just a light beam of doom, but.

Oh, goddamnit. The one bit of foreshadowing everyone expected to be foreshadowing, and they pay it off so much later that everyone had long since forgotten about it.

They seem to be pretty accurate scribbles though. I'm not sure what about them would be left-over from being corrupted. Nephrite faces aren't very detailed so you can draw it with two circles easy. Their uniforms seem to be unchanged. And even in the drawings the captain just seems to have bigger hair.

I kind of want to use Pink Steven’s “super neutral” face as an avatar, but with regular colors so it’s not a spoiler.

Maybe I can just turn it black-and-white.

I am a huge fan of Peridot's new glasses. Garnet's are a little tacky, but mixing her trademark square headblocker shades and the star motif was never going to go smoothly.

In terms of super frustrating, I only got to watch it all last night because Sling carried everything but "Change Your Mind," and I knew I'd be super frustrated if I couldn't watch the climax. But that changed last night.

First off, nice.

Second, I can't believe they actually went there with Steven's gem. That was quite the Wham Shot.

Part of me is of split minds on Blue and Yellow and how quickly and, perhaps more importantly, how totally they were able to make their respective Heel Face Turns. It's a bit more believable with Blue considering that she was already closer to sympathizing with Pink over various issues. But even accepting that Yellow had quite the Heel Realization, the fact that the two were able to smoothly call Steven by his name from that point forward felt off.

To use myself as an example, I really do my best to call my friends by their preferred pronouns. But I regularly slip up, even when I've only known them for two or three years (I'm working on it, but I still screw up). Blue and Yellow are able, once they get it, to consistently call him "Steven" after thinking of "Pink" for six millennia? Heck, "Three Gems and a Baby" showed that Amethyst and Pearl had issues with that for longer.

So, in short, I kind of hope that Season 6 goes into more detail, and that Blue and Yellow still have issues but are working towards better acceptance.

I was immediately struck by how much Rainbow Quartz 2.0 reminded me of Bert from Mary Poppins, so I'm glad that I wasn't just imagining that myself (I probably would have caught the mix with Mary herself if RQ had ridden around the umbrella by holding it aloft instead of witch-on-a-broomstick style).

I'm still left wondering as to just why the gems are so militaristic, though. They've got decently beefy standing armies... and yet, we have no indication as to what they need those armies for. They existed before Rose's Rebellion, and they existed after said rebellion was believed to be destroyed... I have a feeling season 6 will finally answer why Homeworld has so many military forces.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.
