Has Sadie and Lar's relationship always been meant to parallel Rose and Greg's but in reverse, or is it just that bit?
Sugar seems to be talking more about the four of them as individuals as related to Steven, rather than each pair (and didn't really mention the "reverse" part, that was more my observation).

Question: What was the inspiration for Lars and Sadie's arcs in season five?
Rebecca Sugar: That's interesting. Well, I think of Lars and Sadie as paralleling Rose and Greg in many ways. Lars is setting off to have these intergalactic adventures—he becomes a person who is pink and magical—and Sadie is setting off on her rock and roll career. I think that there are these two sides of Steven's life—you know, his magic side and his human side—that they sort of fall on those tracks in a way that I thought felt like a nice symmetry to me.

I would think just that bit, honestly; their relationship was really unhealthy before, and I think Sadie starting a band and Lars becoming a magic space zombie may be the first step toward changing that. Lars isn't a bad kid, but he's way not mature enough to be in a relationship yet.

Maybe that's meant to parallel Rose's initial attitude of 'aww, the monkey thinks it's people!' toward Greg, but.

It's been fun.

Wow, so all this time, everyone who complained that Lars/Sadie felt dysfunctional while also praising Greg/Rose for not being the perfect ideal relationship was totally missing the dramatic parallels. We were so busy focusing on Steven and Connie paralleling Rose and Greg that we never considered that Lars and Sadie were also meant to parallel them.

The coming episodes are shaping up to have two conflicts: getting the corrupted gems cured and getting Steven out of being Pink Diamond.

You think they'll be resolved simultaneously, or one then the other?

Reading the episode descriptions, I'm not seeing anything about the corrupted gems (though the descriptions aren't really all that helpful, either). I wouldn't be surprised if White refuses to help on that front and the corrupted gems have to sit on the backburner until she's dealt with.

The descriptions avoid anything as specific as the corrupted gems.

White Diamond wants Steven to be Pink and Steven wants White to cure corruption. But which happens first? Does it end up with "The world is saved, now Steven has to save himself." or "Steven's given up his life just for a future chance of saving everyone?"

I know it was certainly Deliberate Values Dissonance, but I still cringed when that part was shown where Pearl says that she was considered one of Steven's "things".

I feel like they could wring a whole episode out of the part where Blue Diamond talks about Garnet.

Wonder if we'll get any reason why Blue and Yellow Pearl weren't with their diamonds in "Reunited".

Is that sauna pre-existing or something made for Steven? I don't see how it would even make a good luxury item, given gems are incredibly temperature-resistant, unless it's just a repurposed decorative fountain.

The other Crystal Gems could get sidelined for most of this arc, judging by the "Steven uses his psychic powers to find help" episode description. Seems like they're going to be separated from Steven for most or all of the time, and be offered either house arrest or a trip back to Earth.

White Diamond is clearly going to be the main antagonist, but Blue and Yellow may join her in trying to keep Steven away from his friends.

No more than when "Pink" is Steven, I'd think. There's still only the one gem.

They've been surprisingly tolerant about "Pink"'s organic form—not to mention the whole armed rebellion. If Stevonnie was formed in front of the diamonds, I wouldn't be surprised if the only punishment was not allowing them to do it again and possibly separating the two to enforce that.

If the SU movie were to get a different composer from Aivi Tran and Surasshu, who do you think it should be?

Personally, I'd love to see Vangelis do the music.

So one of the images from the trailer showed this childlike drawing with all the Diamonds and Pink which some people think is a significant flashback or very early memory

Picture in question

It's hard to see that drawing when it's overlapping a different one. Here is a .gif set of all the new footage, including the shot showing the stack of three drawings.

Going by that it seems Pink Diamond was always the most childish of the Diamonds. That very first one makes me wonder if it's based on when Pink was first created/became conscious.

I almost wonder if, under any other circumstance than being a Diamond, she might have been declared an Off-Color and, if so, that bit of myopia might be what gets the Diamonds (and, by extension Homeworld) to become more accepting of Rose's ideals.

  • The thrones for the diamonds together are positioned like their emblem. I'm guessing the higher seats are also further back, otherwise White's legs would dangle awkwardly over Pink's head. White's seat is the only one without stairs, so presumably it and/or she get it in via levitation.
  • I like how Yellow Pearl sticks her pinky out when Giving Someone the Pointer Finger.
  • Steven's gem looks oddly high on his chest when wearing the Pink Diamond getup.
  • Speaking of which, Steven's version of the outfit has two difference (besides how it fits): It has no leggings and the belly window is not as wide.
  • By the point Blue tries to separate Steven, Connie has changed clothes as well, so it's presumably at least a day later.
  • Two of Pink's drawings show the other diamonds as more happy when she's around (well, Yellow looks indifferent either way). One guesses Pink thought the others used to care about her.
  • The second drawing is really mysterious, but Steven kind of skips past it. Maybe it's important for something ever further than this arc, like the movie.

Going by that it seems Pink Diamond was always the most childish of the Diamonds.
As opposed to what?

I was thinking in terms of how I can't quite imagine Yellow or Blue being quite so childishly immature, even after their initial creation. Though you're right in how nothing suggests Pink wasn't the childish one at any point.

If she can sit down on that without an awkward climb, then the seat would be too small.
