Anne reached for the dials and shut the stove off. It had been long enough, she thought, and her meal was probably done well enough for her to not get sick off it at the very least. She then looked around for something to grab the steak - her own hands might have lacked flesh, but that didn't mean they were impervious to burn damage. Touching hot stuff still hurt.

She settled on using a nearby pair of tongs to move the steak from the frying pan to a plate before looking over her meal. This would probably get her through the remainder of the night, but even so she felt something was missing. The meals she had with the dwarfs were a lot more substantial than this. She supposed she could make a salad to go along with it, but if she was to join Oswald's group for dinner that would just take up more time, and she really wasn't much in the mood to join in the tail end of their meal or worse join in a group of drunks.

Her attention shifted to the contraptions. She knew that she'd chosen to make the meal herself due to her doubts at their cooking skills, but a salad was an easily prepared side dish anyway. Besides, what harm could come from having someone else server her for once? It'd been a while since she'd been in that situation.

"Excuse me again," she said to the contraptions, "But do you think you could make a salad for me?"

The contraptions got to work pretty quickly. While they were working away on her order, she picked up her plate of venison and made her way to Oswald's group again. She took a quick look around before actually saying anything, noting that it seemed that Oswald was starting to hit the alcohol as well. Sven was still the only person obviously drunk, but she couldn't help but worry all the same.

"Hello again, I uh...." she started, "...Well, Oswald invited me to join you for dinner, and despite my own, um...misgivings, I decided that I'd take him up on it. Is everyone here fine with that?"

Outside

Grimhilde looked slightly disturbed for a few moments after Aseyu finished speaking. It wasn't so much that the person she seemed to be speaking off sounded awfully familiar; it was that she mentioned that she had the ability to suppress curses...much like the one that Anne was afflicted with. If what Aseyu was saying was true, and she was talking about the person Grimhilde thought she was looking about, that meant that her attempts to keep her title as Theoland's "fairest of them all" was just violated.

She almost got angry, but then she had another thought. From her fifteen or so years of living with the little puterelle, Grimhilde knew that Anne was not the sort of person who would get enjoyment out of bedding anyone else. Even if she was, she was too annoyingly innocent to sleep with someone the likes of Aseyu, no matter how good the whore claimed she was. And this was her being generous and assuming that Anne was still here. If her logic was correct, this could mean one of two things: Aseyu was talking about someone else with a curse - awfully coincidental, but not unlikely given what else Grimhilde had seen here - or she was bluffing. Well, there was only one way to find out.

She scoffed again and dismissed Aseyu's words with a wave of her hand. "And what does that have to do with anything? Maybe you are good at your profession, but it will take a lot more than simple tales of your past conquests to impress me."

"Ah, s'alright, don't mind."

Sven smiles broadly. "Ya might as well join us."

Hilda is a bit worried about the girl, but considering she'd been by a non-drunk Sven it was highly unlikely she had anything life threatening. She smiles, trying to be cordial, "The more the merrier."

Ozzy snapped back to attention from his unfocused torpor as soon as Anne spoke up. He raised his gaze to her with a brief look of surprise—almost shock—likely because he was not yet used to seeing someone so badly damaged, and yet so serene, aside from a bit of nervousness. Her appearance must have been doing quite a number to confuse Ozzy's general instincts.

The look of surprise lasted only a fleeting moment before he grinned—blinking several times to straighten out his senses—and said, "Oh, Anne! I'm so glad that you decided to join us. I know it can't have been..." he began, then paused, bit his lip, and changed direction, "...Ah, and don't worry, you're in fine company here. These two cheer-chasers are Hilda and Sven, and they've been nothing but courteous." he gestured at each of them, then glanced back at Anne. "I believe you've met Sven already?" he shrugged and began to unwrap his sandwich, "He seems to know you, anyhow. Go ahead and have a seat, we haven't even started eating yet."

He gave a sideways glance at Sven, frowning, "Well, eh... most of us haven't."

Koyel shook his head and said, "we got beetles, but we don't eat 'em if we've got other options. That's more a Kykzavi thing." He looked mildly disgusted, though less than the average Westerner might. "Couldn't tell you more, I only ever seen one Kyk, and Oruena did the talking." He shrugged. "Besides, catching a beetle seems a bit too much trouble for such a small meal. As far as snacks go, I'll stick with candied fruit."

Aseyu was still working on Grimhilde. "We must have made quite a sight. Two women, one white as snow, one black as night, intertwined in lust and pleasure..." she sighed. "I suppose you don't care to hear me go into the details? But they're such details..." Aseyu whispered a particularly explicit sample in Grimhilde's ear.

Koyel awkwardly muttered, "I'll listen if she won't."

[Cellar]

Kokabiel glanced down at Tamara, then back up at Claire. <A small child? I shall not interrogate you for details.> Then it turned back to Tamra. <We were having a discussion on AIs adn their evolution. You would find the details rather dull, I imagine. If not, Claire can share them with you later.>

Samira glanced between Claire and Kokabiel. She still studied Kokabiel with a certain familiar wariness as she said, "it seems like you two got along."

<Indeed. I shall spare you the sarcasm you so often bemoan. I must thank you for introducing us.> Then it cocked its head. <Amu is calling,> it said, sounding rather puzzled.

"Why?" Samira said, "you always ignore him unless there's something really interesting to investigate."

But Kokabiel just paused, listening. <There is,> it said. It offered a bow. <It was a pleasure to meet you, Claire, but I fear I have business to attend to.>

Anne smiled, trying her best to not look freaky. "Thank you," she said, before placing herself down in a seat about a chair away from the rest of the group. She didn't start eating just yet, however. The real reason for her concern was again her missing cheek and her worries about disgusting everyone else, despite her earlier decision that it was a silly thing to worry about. Outwardly, however, she glanced again at all the alcohol lying around.

"Um...." she said, "You aren't planning on getting drunk, are you? I mean, Sven's already a lost cause, but I'd prefer to not be the only sober one here."

Outside

Grimhilde just grimaced in disgust in response to what Aseyu just told her. It did confirm that she apparently was talking about Anne, but Grimhilde was still certain that she was bluffing.

"I don't care. Again, your past conquests are of no interest to me," she said, before shaking her head. "Is sex seriously the best you can do? You seem convinced that it's going to work when so far it hasn't."

Ozzy shook his head, "Mmm-mmn, thank you. Always nice to have another, ah... sojourner of this strange estate... at the table." He fell silent after that, almost awkwardly so, before resuming the process of unwrapping his sandwich, which seemed to be taking an exceptional amount of time.

However, before he could make any headway, Anne spoke up again, addressing his drained bottle of beer. "Oh, uh- me?" he asked, picking up the bottle and frowning at it almost sheepishly. "Well..." he began, drawing the word out very slowly, "no... no I suppose not. I don't really drink; this," he shook the bottle, "was just a little... excursion, to celebrate goodwill and sociability. Normally I would greet a chance like that with a nice spot of fine wine, but the beer was already at hand."

Ozzy set the bottle down and slid it to the side, saying, "But that's the last of that. In fact..." he grabbed the bottle with end of his tail then lowered it to the ground in front of a passing machine, to which he said, "There, do away with that if you don't mind. And while you're at it, fashion me... fashion me a root beer; bottled, if you can."

He let the machine scurry on it's way then returned his attention to Anne. "You know, Anne, I think it's perfectly sensible to not want to spend an evening—or early morning, however late it is—dining with a couple of bumbling drunks." He put up a hand and quickly added, "No offense to you Sven, you're sailing just fine, considering." He glanced back at Anne and continued, "Drunkenness can bring out... interesting things in a person, make them say things... they wouldn't normally say. But a drunk's best friend is another drunk, and when you're the only one not a party to all the alcohol, it creates a bit of a wall, doesn't it? A little like watching people converse through a TV screen, or in a foreign country, or..."

Ozzy's voice trailed off, but his eyes were still upon Anne, almost in a scrutinizing way, though Ozzy himself seemed to have lost focus. Dazedly, he reached up and touched his cheek, asking out of the blue, "Does it really not hurt?"

"It was a pleasure meeting you as well, Kokabiel." Said Claire. "I hope to meet you again, some day." Although she was saying goodbye, she was wondering how exactly Kokabiel would leave, as she recalled it saying that it couldn't stray too far from Samira and her kin. Perhaps it had connected to a new relay? Whatever the case, she suspected that whatever was going on had to do with this 'Amu' individual. She quickly reviewed the information she had gained from Kokabiel, though to anyone else she would just seem momentarily idle.

"What's an Amu?" Whispered Tamara, walking up behind Samira. "And, um... What're we gonna do now?"

Mai grinned. "Aw, come on," she said, "what's so bad about beetles? They taste really good. It's not supposed to be a full meal, anyway. Closer to a side dish."

So if Koyel was mildly disgusted by the idea of insectivorism... "Although for a snack," she continued, "you want ants. Hard to catch enough of the little buggers, but if you make the right trap and get enough of them, you'll- well, I'll eat them by the handful. The small handful, anyway. Too much, and you crush them."

[Cellar -> kitchen]

For some reason, Xavier was feeling a bit awkward, like a fifth wheel or something. His tail twitched along the floor. "So, um," he said, "I'll just... be heading back up now." He was about to start climbing the stairs when he added, "If, you know, you want to talk to me or something." As he went up the stairs, he would've turned red if it could've been seen through his scales.

Okay, seriously, what was up with that? I'm not like that normally. Do I feel like I need to let everyone know where I'm going or something?

Inside the kitchen, Xavier noticed Anne and... a not-minotaur? Maybe. The person looked rather bullish, but not exactly. Mentally shrugging, Xavier headed over to them. "Hey," he said to Anne. "Things going okay for you?" He turned to the not-minotaur. "Hi. I'm Xavier Sunyo."

"My problem with it is that it tends to make people turn into idiots," Anne said, "And I've seen a fair amount of drunks, considering alcohol's practically everywhere where I'm from. With such a downside, I don't know what everyone sees in it."

She frowned a bit before picking up a fork and poking at her venison with it. She knew she should probably start eating before it got cold, but again the worry about disgusting everyone else stopped her. She'd already decided that it wasn't something she should worry about; why was it stopping her now?

She was still poking at it when Oswald asked her if "it" really didn't hurt. She looked up at him in confusion, and was about to ask him what he meant when she noticed his touching his cheek. She then figured that he was asking her about her condition. Apparently, he was still somewhat skeptical despite her earlier reassurance.

"Oh. Um..." she frowned again. "It doesn't hurt physically, at least. It's just...um...awkward. Like now, for instance. The lack of a cheek there makes me worried that...." She paused, wondering if Oswald would find her concerns just as silly as she did. "...Well, when I eat something, it's like chewing with my mouth open all the time and not being able to close it. I usually eat alone because I don't want to disgust other people, but...." She trailed off.

A familiar voice talking to her snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned towards Xavier and smiled and nodded at him. "Hello again. I'm feeling much better than I did earlier, anyway." She paused for a moment, then asked, "Is Aseyu getting anywhere with Grimhilde?"

Ozzy removed his fingers from the side of his face, staring at them with almost as much confusion as Anne wore. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he managed to get his words in line, the girl answered his hazy-minded question without much qualm, silencing him.

He listened with a almost wide-eyed curiosity, his hands returning to his half-wrapped sandwich but making no attempts to continue unwrapping it. As her words trailed off, he again opened his mouth to speak, but he only managed to get out, "Oh, no, please-" before he was again silenced by the presence of someone new.

Ozzy turned his head to the newcomer and blinked several times without saying a word. Finally, with a large grin full of awe, he said, "Oh... wow..." then blinked several times more. Eventually, once his self-consciousness seemed to kick-in, he set his sandwich down on the table, scooted his chair back a bit, and rose to his feet.

"I- p-pardon my gawking," he said, "I don't mean to be rude. Xavier, is it?" he stuck his hand out to shake, "Oswald Prosper Leonard Orozco. It's a fine pleasure to meet you."

He makes a slow grab towards Hilda's beer as a drone puts her salad in front of her. She moves her hand to the right and evades his hand.

He shook Ozzy's hand and said, "Oh, that's fine. I've seen enough of it." He said it nonchalantly enough to suggest it didn't bother him. "Pleasure to meet you, too."

Ozzy nodded and smiled at the dragon man, not entirely sure of what else to say. However, when Sven mentioned having seen Xavier in the parlor earlier, Ozzy suddenly recalled that he had seen him as well.

He glanced at Sven. "The parlor... that's the room with the piano, isn't it?" He turned his head back to Xavier, "Come to think of it, I think I remember seeing you there too. Memory is a little hazy though, and I don't think you would recognize me. At the time I was wearing pounds of cotton, wool, and even a little burlap, covering almost every inch of my person."

He looked down to his left, then to his right, then took a step back and started to lower himself back into his chair. However, before he got half way, he clenched his teeth and pushed himself back upright. "Say- Xavier," Ozzy began, crooking his head to one side, "would you care to join us? We're simply eating a bit and sharing company, and... well, there's always room for more, if you're not on your way elsewhere."

Aseyu continued her work. "Well," she said, "sex, and disposing of troublesome mages. The whole anti-magic thing, y'know?" Then sh grinned. "Before you ask, that's not a threat. Never been a big fan of threats. Gives the other sucker too long to get ready." Then she grinned. "Hey, you obviously aren't one for what I'm offering, but you any good in a fight? Xavier flared his wings. "Sure. Why not? I'm not really doing anything else at the moment. Kinda why I came up here, since I noticed you here when I went down and... yeah."

He began looked around the kitchen. Maybe there would be something that grabbed his interest. "And I figured that since I didn't really know you, I might as well talk to you. Get to know you a bit." He frowned and glanced at Ozzy. "Getting to know people seems to be a thing here."

"But what'd you expect from me?" she asked. "I'm a lizard. Lizards eat bugs. Therefore, I eat bugs." Mai stopped and frowned again. "But then," she muttered, "a lot of apes eat bugs, so that by logic... Never mind." She shook her head. "Anyway, be thankful I'm not a dung beetle."

Grimhilde had to admit; she was waiting for a chance to show off. However, she couldn't help but be somewhat wary all the same.

"In a sense," she responded, "But that depends on what your offer is." She did have a thought about what it could be, but she waited to hear it regardless. Provided she didn't have to wrestle to get it out; Aseyu seemed like the sort of person to make her do that.

Ozzy sucked in air, then nodded with a smile that wasn't wholly reflected in the nervous flit of his eyes. "Yes," he said, "that does indeed sound to me to be the tune of the evening- dah... er, dawning hours, I suppose. Truth be told, I haven't been outside since I stumbled in."

Ozzy turned away, a worried look suddenly overtaking his face as he murmured something about mud and carpets. However, a moment later he let it go with a shake of his head and said, "Well, Xavier, go ahead and find a place to sit— or stand; you know, whatever su... strikes..." He found himself distracted, staring with a dazed fascination at the dragon man's wings. "...tickles... fancy... suits."

He stared for a few seconds longer, then shook his head again. "Oh- oh dear, you must excuse me, I..." he shut his eyes for a moment, then opened them and gave Xavier a large smile, "Make yourself comfortable."

With that, he stepped back once more and returned to his seat, drumming his fingers nervously against the table top for a while. After a little while, he stopped with a small cry of, "Ah!" and turned his attention to Anne. "My apologies for leaving you without an answer, Anne." he spoke in a more hushed tone than usual, "But, please don't worry about offending or 'disgusting' us. I think all of us here are reasonable folk; no one is going to resent you for something that you can't help." he shrugged, "Besides, I think it's at least as rude to stare as it is to eat with your mouth open. And... if it's really bothering you, then just try to chew with one side of your mouth— but I guarantee you, no one here is going to notice."

Ozzy gave her smile and a friendly wink with his green eye, then looked away, taking his sandwich and turning his attention to unwrapping it— or, possibly, rewrapping it.

She tapped her knee as she considered. "Win, and I will stop trying to get under your dress. Many women dream of having me there, but since you seem so insistent on sticking to your boring life..." she sighed. "Lose, and..." she tapped her chin. "Well, I know what you're thinking, but 'lose and you sleep with me' is just plain rape-y. I'm perverted, no shame about that, but a woman has to know where to draw the line." She studied Grimhilde. Xavier blinked. Most people weren't like... that. Granted, it wasn't exactly an unwelcome reaction, but it might old fast. "They're... just wings," he said to Ozzy in a tone of voice that was almost sheepish. He took a step back and spread them wide for a moment. "Nothing special about them. Besides being wings, I guess. Technically speaking, I can't even fly with them. I need to supplant them with magic."

I suppose if he's never seen an actual humanoid with wings, they might be fascinating, but to actually leave him tongue-tied? That's... I don't know. I really shouldn't let it bother me if he keeps it up.

Xavier glanced at Anne and frowned. "Something wrong?" he asked.

[Outside] Rowan shifted from one foot to another. There had been rain, he thought, and other things in the heat and the haze and the darkness. It was difficult to tell. Ahead, he thought he could see a building through the mist.

Rowan licked his teeth. It had been a long time since he'd seen proper shelter - not that this building looked like proper shelter, of course, but it had to be better than sleeping on the ground. Shelter meant people, meant food, warmth. Ever since he'd lost sight of Williams, he'd been craving the comforts of home.

No. They'd take one look at him and run screaming- that was odd.

Rowan examined his hands. They were smooth and soft, barring the occasional and not-so-occasional callouses. His knuckles bent easily and fluidly, and his fingers were thin and nimble. His nails were slightly overlong, but nothing that a good clipping couldn't fix.

In other words, they were a pair of perfectly normal, uninteresting hands. His hands.

Suddenly possessed of a strange fervour, Rowan cast about for a reflective surface of any sort. Finding none, he ran his fingers along the sides of his face, under the line of his jaw, over his nose...

All of it was there. Gone were the emaciated, sickness-sharpened cheekbones and the hollow sockets round his eyes. He noticed he still seemed to sport the several days’ worth of growth on his cheeks, but they felt full and healthy once more. Equal parts curious and afraid of what he'd find, he ran his fingers through his hair.

His hair. It grew thick and full and soft on his head, and stayed when he tugged at it. Rowan smiled. He had hair. He felt like dancing about like some sort of fool. He had hair!

Of course, he was still abominably dirty, with the remains of caked-on blood and muck on his trousers. His shirt was where he'd left it, and he shivered and looked up at the building once more. Assuming it wasn’t another hallucination, he could rest and recuperate for a while, and then search for Williams. Time was no longer a problem, since it seemed someone had given him a booster shot of prysium while he’d been out. There even seemed to be figures outside the building. Rowan cleared the last of the trees and called out to them roughly.

Anne looked down at her venison, then back up at Oswald. "Are you sure?" she asked, not sounding entirely convinced, "You sound sincere enough, but at the same time you haven't actually seen it yet. For I know, I could start eating and wind up making everyone lose their dinner." She then sighed and cradled her forehead with her hand. "And at the same time, I'm going to feel silly if I'm worrying about nothing, never mind that I already feel silly for worrying about this at all...."

When Xavier spoke to her, she looked up at him. "Well...I'm concerned that I'm going to offend everyone else since eating and missing a cheek don't really go together, despite the fact that Oswald doesn't think I should be worried about it and I don't think I should be worried about it...." She glanced down at the table, eyes settling on a napkin. Suddenly, an idea came to her.

"...Is there a string or something around here?" she asked, seemingly out of the blue.

Outside

Now this was more in line with her interests. Grimhilde wasn't one for casual dueling - mostly because, with the way she fought, casual dueling would just be awkward - but the chance to get this woman off her back would be very nice. The question was what to wager, since as confident as she felt she didn't know what to expect from Aseyu. Money probably wouldn't work, given that the two of them came from different lands, and she sure as hell wasn't putting secrets of any sort on the line.

To start with, she removed the mirror from her belt, dispelling the dragon face on it with a couple of taps, then faced Aseyu and tapped the top of it twice again. The mirror responded with swirling, and promptly made the same reaction it did when it scanned Alice all those hours ago. Grimhilde raised an eyebrow before shutting it off and returning it to her belt. All she had learned from it was that she probably shouldn't get too cocky.

She thought for some seconds more, before finally settling on an offer that wouldn't be detrimental to anything except possibly her sanity.

"If you win," she stated, in a remarkably formal tone of voice, "then I will accept your company for the remainder of my time here. Consider it a consolation prize for not getting the chance to sleep with me. Sound fair enough to you?"

She heard the voice of a newcomer calling out to them, but as she had more important things to deal with she paid it no heed. It was probably something better left to the other patrons of this building.

[Kitchen]

Ozzy glanced back up as Anne reiterated her concerns, a small frown at the edges of his mouth. "Well, I don't think it's a silly thing to worry about." he said, setting his sandwich back on the table and shaking his head. "In fact, it's quite polite of you to think of others before going ahead and eating. But..." Ozzy narrowed his eyes and put a hand on his chin, "Sven, Hilda, and I have all declared that we are fine with having you here. Indeed, we're happy to have you here. I think we would have known that you were going to be eating as well. If someone loses their dinner, it's on us— but again, I wouldn't worry."

He gestured towards himself, "I'm not about to lose the first real meal I've had in days," then he gestured to Sven, "if Sven sends out his regards, I think the copious amounts of beer he's been drinking are the more likely suspect. And Hilda," he shrugged, "Hilda's just having a salad."

At that moment, one of the kitchen contraptions crawled across the table and deposited the bottle of root beer Ozzy had requested. "Hah, thanks." he said, a hint of awe in his voice. He gently prodded the machine with his finger before it went scuttling about it's way.

He gave Anne a quick, curious glance when she asked for a string, then picked up his bottle and tried to de-cap it on the edge of the table, saying, "A string? Like a piece of string? What kind of string? If it's thin and dirty you want, I might be able to pull one off of my laundry pile here." he nudged with his shoulder at the robes draped over the back of his chair, before finally popping the cap off of his root beer and taking a swig. Setting it back down, he added, "But it wouldn't be my first choice, whatever the need."

Rowan shuffled forward again. Now that he could see the figures more clearly, he decided he had a rather sneaking suspicion that he wasn’t in Kansas anymore. The one with the mirror was rather pointedly ignoring him, so he rather pointedly said nothing. Instead, he walked until he was a good ten feet from either of the two. Then, he simply stood there silently in his torn, bloodied and muddied trousers, his shoeless feet sinking into the dirt, and his bare back covered in layer after layer of grime. He swayed slightly from side to side, and flashed each of the others a toothy grin.

[Outside]

Like Grimhilde, Aseyu paid the newcomer no mind beyond a polite nod before continuing. "Honey," she said, "you'll have to do better than that. You haven't really thought of a way to get rid of me anyways." She gave a dismal sigh. "Really, if you can't come up with better, I'll just stick with trying to help you out of your shell. And clothes. Order's not important."

On the other hand, Koyel spotted a welcome sight. He stood, took a quick bow, and said to Rowan, "spirits, you look like a mother boar caught you near her piglets with a bottle of sauce an' a skewer." Koyel chuckled, then considered his own threadbare, old-fashioned blue uniform. "Eh, I ain't really one to tell you that you ain't fit for a night on the theater, am I?" He stroked his scraggly beard in thought, then said, "anyhow, Koyel ul'Netho. Welcome to I-don't-know-where, pleasure to have you here." He glanced at the rest of the group and quietly added, "all them seem fine, even the dragon-woman," he glanced at Mai, "but they're all silk, and I'm just linen, y'know?"

[Basement]

Samira nodded and said, "certainly." She was looking forward to hearing Tamara's rendition of earlier events... and quietly hoped she'd forget all about the briefly-mentioned Amu. Although if her own daughter was any example, that was unlikely to be the case.
