Laconic Description Improvement

Today I found out an interesting fact from troper Ironeye:

Don't ever make the mistake of using the Laconic version as the canonical trope meaning—the laconics are often written by people who don't actually understand the drop. In this case, the laconic only corresponds to one possible cause of Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy.

The Laconic Description for DIAA states as follows:

The thing is, these descriptions are supposed to make it easier to understand what the page is about. If they can't be accurate as well as short and sweet, then there's a problem.

So for starters, what would be a better description for DIAA?

[up] I know it sounds stupid, but it's pretty accurate, though it needs to be fixed in some way. Since the show is a rather long Space Opera with a case of Third Line, Some Waiting, it's hard to put into words. Short summary:

  • In order to free his sister from being the Emperor's potential concubine, a prideful soldier rises up in ranks while crafting his own One World Order ideas for the empire and the rest of the galaxy.
  • A history student turned soldier, too talented for his own good, gets pushed around by Corrupt Politicians while trying to defend his home from the above guy in the name of the democracy.
  • Ancient Conspiracy, who's been masterminding both nations' downfall, creates situations that would either cause them to destroy each other or unite all power in the hands of someone they could take over.

The All Blue Entry definitely needs to go, though. I'll go ahead and zap the expendable potholes unless someone else did it already.

[up][up][up][up] Should I change Laconic.Classical Movie Vampire to the suggestion then? What are the conditions to change a Laconic description?

Pokémon Legends: Arceus reads as:

Pokémon, BUT AS A MEDIEVAL PREQUEL.

It tells almost nuthin’ about the game itself, like how it’s set in Hisui or anythin’. Tried fixin’ it, but couldn’t come up with sumfin’ good.

[up] Pokémon tells the story of the start of humans and Pokémon’s coexistence while taking cues from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

I know nothing about Pokémon so I tried my best. How about “A Distant Prequel to the Pokémon franchise set before humans and Pokémon coexisted with each other”

I think Ship Tease needs more rewriting since it's more reliant on the other trope.

"A hint of potential romance between two characters."

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Perhaps make it clear that it's intentional, so it's kept separate from audience reaction shipping tropes? Perhaps...

"A work contains a deliberate hint of potential romance between two characters."

Or something like that.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Laconic. The Heavy has the "while not the Big Bad" part even though the description says The Heavy can be the Big Bad as well, either of the two needs a clarification.

Laconic.Name That Unfolds Like Lotus Blossom:

A person's name is a multi-word description — more a phrase than a name.

But if PlayingWith.Name That Unfolds Like Lotus Blossom is right, then a Downplayed would be Only One Name "Blade"...

So to be most flexible, should the laconic remove "multi-word"?

[up][up]The Heavy laconic was only changed a couple of days ago, by the looks of it. So mistake is very recent. I think the Laconic needs to change.

[up]Regarding 'Name Unfolds...', the link to the draft is on the Discussion page, and one of the people involved in the creation of this trope is still around. It looks to me like the Playing With is misuse. I would think that the only way "Blade" could be a downplay of this trope is if his name is, I don't know, something like "Soul Forged Like A Blade By Hardship" but he never gives people his full name and just goes by "Blade" all the time.

But that's my understanding of the trope. We could always ask the troper who helped create the trope whether the Playing With is correct.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

The original intent was more what Wyld is saying. It was definitely supposed to be long, super descriptive names, not just any old descriptive name. That probably wouldn't be very distinct from Meaningful Name, anyway. One of the working titles for the trope was Overly Descriptive And Poetic Name (or some variation of that), making it the only trope I've ever helped draft that actually saw a title become more obtuse rather than less.

We have They Call Him "Sword" for short descriptive names of that exact variant, too.

To me Laconic. The Man Behind The Man seems more like description of Greater-Scope Villain. Should this be fixed?

Humankind is like a train. No matter how powerful the locomotive is, it can only travel as fast as its slowest car allows it to.

The Greater-Scope Villain one is more inaccurate, it should be more like "A villain with larger influence on the world than the Big Bad, indirectly responsible for causing the main conflict".
