I admit...the claims of 'feminism ruining everything' and 'misandry' are damned amusing.

Like, have those people ever watched a Mad Max film beyond the first?

I mean, seriously, Max's role is always to go into somebody else's story, help solve their issues and go on with a bit of his lost humanity regained.

If they want "Max goes around and makes fools blow up" I recommend a series Max helped inspire.

Or Fallout.

Seriously, if Max Max 1 and 2 didn't exist, neither would the Fallout franchise.

Or Borderlands, for that matter.

Yes, but those lack the testosterone of FOTNS and the whole "punch people make them EXPLODE"

[up]Bloody Mess perk from Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas says hi. tongue

Which you can do with unarmed actions on your opponents.

edit

From that awesome jezebel article:

"THIS MOVIE IS MORE FEMINAZI THAN THE SHE-STAFFEL." Cross between a squee at that and a full on laugh-fest.

I wasn't aware that Max wasn't the protagonist in Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. I mean, he seemed pretty protagonist-y to me when I watched them.

By any chance, Lighty, are you Light Snake on Game FA Qs?

Yes.

The issue isn't that Max isn't the protagonist. But Max stumbles upon other peoples' fights. In Road Warrior, Max and the Lord Humungous have literally nothing against one another on a personal level. The Lord Humungous is attacking a settlement and Max ends up helping and defending it.

In Thunderdome, Max is more or less drafted into helping the fight against Auntie Entity, only to help others achieve their goals with the plane.

At no point is Max himself having the conflict with the villains beyond in that he places himself in opposition to them by joining the fights of others.

[up]Yeah, I thought we had something in the arsenal to cover Mad Max as a character.

@Elkhorn

I've got to say, the more you rip on a movie you haven't seen, quoting MRA criticisms, the more it seems like you're less interested in "preserving the spirit of the series" and more threatened by female characters who are something other than helpless victims.

If that's not your motivation, that's fine, but you're not coming off real well here.

There's Supporting Protagonist, and there's not being the protagonist in an installment of the series named after you where you've been the protagonist in every one up to that point.

threatened by female characters who are something other than helpless victims.

Yes, because so many female characters in the previous movies were helpless victims.

If that's not your motivation, that's fine

Least you're willing to admit you might be wrong (and you are).

Mad Max is the protagonist. He just isn't the only protagonist. I'm not sure why you are still harping on about this. The movie stars Max. The movie just isn't about Max.

In fact, only the first movie has been about Max. The second and third starred him, but were about other people.

Once again: How is this Mad Max film different from the last two, exactly in respect to Max's role? And why is Max sharing the top spot with Furiosa so bad?

Really? A lot of the positive press I linked said she occupied that spot all by her own dang self. I'm getting mixed signals here.

Oh well.

On another note, the tie in game, though not quite, is coming out in September, and it looks quite good so far in this trailer.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/04/23/mad-max-gameplay-trailer/

You can bet there will be folks out there on the internet saying it's a "Fallout/Borderlands" rip-off though...

edit. Way back in post 75 in this thread, Yo Kab nailed it in his or hers breakdown of the franchise. I actually used it when I saw the film on Thursday night, and it was pretty much spot on. Didn't lessen how good the film was in any way.

There's some other stuff on this as well - a series of comics are coming out, dealing with backstories for most of the main characters.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2015/05/18/george-miller-mad-max-fury-road-comics-exclusive-preview/27518457/

So far, Nux, Immortan Joe, Max and Imperator Furiosa are getting some more light shed on them.

GethKnight Since: Apr, 2010

I don't really feel that Nux needs it.

A short oneshot about Nux being remembered after his death would be interesting. A faceless fool, just one of many in an army of similarly deluded mooks, who seeks to die for the glory of someone who cares nothing about him, instead dies to protect others and is remembered as a hero. So scenes of after the end of the movie juxtaposed with scenes of his life before Furiosa's coup.

@Elkhorn

I don't believe I said the women in the previous film were helpless victims. I said that all your "Strong Independent Womyn" comments (which stopped being clever and/or funny about the third time they were made) would seem to suggest that you have an issue with women who aren't especially when your entire criticism is based on reviews of a film you haven't seen. You've got an axe to grind against a problem that, at least in this movie, doesn't exist and you're arguing about the content of the film that you haven't even watched.

At least go watch the damn movie before trying to criticize it.
