He's hella shell shocked right around then. He tells you as much when you max out affinity that he was one particularly bad day away from committing suicide by raider.

Eh. I don't particularly like that reveal either. I'm not saying it doesn't all hang together, more that it's a long way to go just to give you an excuse to be faction leader even though there's really no reason you should be. I'd much rather that effort go toward letting you help Garvey get over his lingering doubts (which could then be somewhere short of contemplating suicide), and/or actually convincing him you were right for the job, rather than him just handing it to you because he didn't want it.

@Protagonist I will say that base-building *can* be kind of fun if you choose to get into it, but I wouldn't really want to do it all over again. Which, like you said, you pretty much have to do if you want to have anything to do with the Minutemen in any given playthrough.

What I did kind of hate is that you can't convince him to take on the role of General himself, though, and/or have him be the one delivering those speeches and warnings over Minuteman Radio.

Interrupt his dialogue at the right time, and he'll accidentally tell you the truth.

"The one good thing about being the last minuteman is-" "Now it's your job."

Well, we did impress him when we took on a raider gang and a deathclaw at the same time. Not saying we should be made General for it, but think of it this way: If we're not the General why are we getting to unilaterally decide how to build the settlements? We do get that tutorial where we're told what to build step by step, but it's super easy to cheese that before it even begins and just get extra experience from something we did on our own.

I've always said Preston should be General and we should be Colonel. I still stand by that. The Sim Settlers mod should've been an option in the base game, where we could just plant down beacons telling the settlers what they should build where for maximum efficiency.

People hate the way you get settlements quests, and since Preston is the mouthpiece for that mechanic he became a face they could dislike for it. Other than the usual "He's dull/boring compared to everyone else's personality" that's the bulk of it.

I can't get over how often people were throwing away rare expensive ammo in trash cans in the pre war.

[up]It's the pristine bottlecaps that get me. Still, if I run out of the ammo I find in the bins I can always buy more of them with the bottlecaps. [lol]

So. Fallout 5?

Where?

In Development Hell probably.

Hopefully all the shady shit they did with 76 was in the name of funding the most ambitious Fallout mainline game ever

It's not all about money. While I'm sure money was a factor, 76's problems stem from being developed by an inexperienced team with way too soon of a deadline.

[up]Hopefully. It looks like I am not going to buy Elder Scrolls VI. Unless they've come to their senses at Bethesda and binned Gamebryo. It's a pretty certain bet that Fallout 5 will be that game with guns, so...

The engine for 6 was already announced to be Creation.

Again, not a problem, IF care is taken with it. The right combination of mods made Skyrim the only game I've sunk anywhere near 2000 hours into between the different versions I have. Fallout 4 was also astonishingly fun to play.

By and large, Fallout feels a little better than the elder scrolls of the same generation, since Fallout at least gives you more ranged options, and doesn't require you to engage in the terrible melee combat.

And it's not even hard to FIX the melee issue. One of those mods I got makes melee much more fun by adding dodge mechanics and making weapon hit detection much smaller.

The Killer's have a song with the line 'Are we humans or we dancers?' Then fallout 4 comes out with a person who turns out to be a synth called paladin Danse...

Eh, probably a coincidence.

Sometimes things with ridiculous odds just happen, like a raider spawning in the mass fusion executive suite, where he shouldn't be, then taking one shot at my character, only for it to ricochet and kill him.

Perks like "Trigger Rush" from maxing out affinity with Cait always feel like hollow rewards to me. You get AP regen if your health falls below 25 percent. Neat, except if I am at 25 percent health at any point in this game the AP regen isn't going to help me. You'd have to be absolutely unprepared for a dungeon dive or boss fight, or otherwise starved for Stim Paks and water, so by the point this perk takes effect the fight is probably well over.

I have genuinely never found a point when these perks even matter for me. My firefights aren't so prolonged, there's a danger zone where getting my AP back faster really isn't going to make the difference against a Deathclaw or last few stray Synths.

If it were an early Perk, back when fireifghts can be pretty hazardous and health pick-me-ups scarce, sure. I could see it as a "you're on your way to becoming a Wasteland God" sort of bonus. Instead you have to go through an extended quest just to obtain it.

Ever since that DLC came out I end up defaulting to Codsworth on all my characters because of his sheer versatility. And ever since that mod came out on PS 4 that made stable versions of the best weapons for robots I just can't stop bringing him everywhere.

I'm gonna get that mod that lets me keep his thruster tentacles in addition to having two of his eyes swapped out for guns.

Buzzsaw, sprayer, laser cannons, and maybe a rocket launcher or a nailgun. But more than that, I love his shitty jokes, I love that he has such a strong sense of ethics, I love that he's just in general, fantastic.

I definitely have the mod that lets me traipse about the wasteland with ALL my buddies in tow. I wish that was just a thing in the game. Let me have my party, dammit.

One of my random drops was a Legendary harpoon gun that does explosive damage. I converted the ammo type to flechette rounds and gave it to Synth CVRIE to use as basically an explosive shotgun. I watched her one-shot gib a deathclaw. Man, I love having an adventuring party.

FOFD: I have genuinely never found a point when these perks even matter for me.

Those perks do range enormously in their usefulness, John Hancock's 'Isodoped' compared to Danse's 'Know Your Enemy' for example, one requires you to have 25% of your life missing for critical hits building quicker and the other lets 20% more damage against irradiated ghouls, super mutants and synths.

I want perks that are going to be handy all the time, not require me to be on deaths door to activate at all.

I remember when it was bugged and gave you a 2000% boost to headshot accuracy in VATS. It was, uh, pretty strong.

The companion perk system in Fallout 4 is a little odd. Ignoring the varied spread of "generally quite nice", "useful to certain builds", and "really situational or kinda useless" perks, I do also remember it kind of encouraging me to go... hey, buddy, we've reached the cusp of our relationship. Let us declare our love and promise to be with each other for all time. Anyway goodbye forever, time to grind out the next companion.
