You sure that another game developer can't buy their assets from EA and relaunch Origin?
EA is outright using the name for their launcher and subscription service.
Why would they sell it to a competitor.
Pretty certain. The Ultima series doesn't have much of a presence in the modern game environment. It'd be easier to do a game with the same themes as Ultima than deal with the baggage.
You'd also have to somehow wrangle it out of EA's hands, which would require a very fat paycheck. Not very economical.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?I see. What modern game studio can be considered the modern equivalent of Origin Systems?
Ew. Larian Studios is closer, I think. Though Divinity:Original Sin is closer to Baldur's Gate than Ultima.
Mega Man fanatic extraordinaireSpeaking of Baldur's Gate, Larian is developing a third game.
I might suggest Other Side Entertainment.
Their Underworld Ascendant takes after the Ultima Underworld games, and they're working on a new System Shock game.
(The former was alas met with a fairly poor reception, I gather; the latter at least is looking pretty good thus far, I think.)

My Games & WritingBioWare does feel like a spiritual successor to Origin Systems. Even if they are owned by EA.

That actually makes them even more of a spiritual successor in a way.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI'm casting "Awaken" on this thread!
Specifically, I was reading our page on the franchise today, and I noticed that we have the claim there that the Avatar and the "stranger" from the first three games are two different people.
Is there a source for that claim? My understanding is that there's little concrete evidence that the two are one and the same, but also none indicating that they aren't. However, I'm not confident enough in this for me to Be Bold without raising the matter with others first—hence this post.
I do know that the "Codex of Ultima Wisdom" fan-wiki indicates that they're the same, and I recall that (for what it's worth) Ultima IX indicates them to be the same, too.

My Games & WritingI remember the Ultima VII manual stating outright that they are the same person, and the Stranger became the Avatar over the course of Ultima IV.
Ukrainian Red CrossAh, that's a good point—I actually have the Ultima VII manual to hand! (I've been streaming it, for one thing.) I can thus check!
... And yup, it pretty much explicitly states the two figures to be the same.
Now, granted, the manual is written from the perspective of the game's villain, Batlin—but along with other items and a lack of an apparent reason to lie there, I'm inclined to take it as indicative.
Okay then, I think that I'll edit the page to reflect this (along with a few other bits of cleanup that I spotted).
Thank you for your input! ^_^
[edit] And 'tis done, I do believe! ^_^

Lord British is making an NFT based MMO.
What an ivory tower this guy lives in.
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.Someone tell Jim Sterling.

And from what I understand Lord British’s attempt at a Spiritual Successor to Ultima was...bad.
