On TV Tropes, it's very common for editors to misuse appearance tropes, as well as tropes whose names make them sound like they could be appearance tropes.
Meaningful Appearance tropes are often misused in ways that overlook the "Meaningful" aspect, resulting in Zero Context Examples and misuse in the form of examples that have no meaning even if the tropes themselves are not People Sit on Chairs.
The Appearance Tropes Cleanup sandbox covers tropes with potential issues. Tropes that simply require cleanup will go through this thread, while tropes that require more significant action will have to go through the Trope Repair Shop.
April 2, 2023 update: This thread is no longer for making changes to tropes, and was brought back from the Projects Morgue solely for cleanup. Making changes to tropes is still a job for the Trope Repair Shop.

I don’t think it’s chairs but I do think it should just be covered by Anime Chinese Girl because Odango is usually just part of what builds the stereotype and I am not sure if it’s worth isolating but doing so is a valid course of action I guess. But wouldn’t it need to be rename so that people won’t use this as any bun hairstyle? Description probably needs refocusing to too
Dunno about making it a fan speak term.
Macron's notes
Edit: To add a comment of my own, I don't see any reason to separate visual shorthand for Anime Chinese Girl from Anime Chinese Girl itself when it's more efficient to simply have a single bullet point saying a character is an Anime Chinese Girl with a bun hairstyle, especially when the visual shorthand in question is already a ZCE magnet (43 out of 50 wicks in the wick check are ZCEs).

I got a rock for Halloween.Moved this thread to Odango Hair.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI dunno. The one thing I think about Odango Hair the most is Sailor Moon.
ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔|I DO COMMISSIONS|ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔Looks like this thread somehow moved out of long term projects to TRS?
Sailor Moon did popularize the double bun style but beyond it being iconic part of her design, I don’t really think it’s notable unless a character is made as a homage to her (which would just be Sailor Senshi Send-Up). The trope at its core seems to just be a stereotypical hairstyle for Anime Chinese Girls.

Macron's notesI think I'm now on board with the idea that the trope itself is redundant with Anime Chinese Girl. I still think that a fanspeak page, like Zettai Roukai, would be useful to define the term, as its a common feature of anime character design, there's no other concise way to describe the hairstyle and it would be useful to have something to wick in the context of other examples.
"It's just a show; I should really just relax"So our options seem to be:
- Merge with Anime Chinese Girl
- Turn into a Disambig
- Make Fan-Speak (Not mutually exclusive with the Merge)

BTW should we move onto other feminine hair tropes like Mega Twintails after this?

Fingerless Gloves is after this so no. Maybe when me or someone else makes a wick check for that trope. I am currently working on making wick checks for all the tropes listed on the sandbox.
But yeah it does have some issues with just being about the hairstyle

Macron's notesI think we should do Cool Shades at some point, there are a lot of wicks that are just "character has sunglasses"
HAPPY HALLOWEEN FOR MARIAAgain, we can't do a trope until it has a wick check.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallIf you think we should tackle a trope at some point, please add it to the sandbox.
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢The Three-Day Rule applies here as much as it does on TRS and IP, right? I'm assuming we'd have to wait until the 21st to make a crowner, since the thread's focus didn't officially shift to Odango Hair until the 18th.
I got a rock for Halloween.could this trope be kept if its focus were shifted to non-Anime Chinese Girl non-Sailor Senshi Send-Up examples, maybe with a rename to match? the page has several examples, primarily in the non-anime folders, that don't fall into either of these types, and i think would still make sense as tropeworthy. they emphasize the wearer's femininity and occasionally evoke Animal Motifs (a mouse or a rabbit, for example). usagi herself would be one of those examples since, being the original sailor senshi, she's not a sendup; the "meatball head" look makes her look girly and immature, and evokes her namesake.

I guess we can follow that rule if IP and TRS are doing it.
Usagi is also an example of Girlish Pigtails and I feel using a double bun style to highlight a character immaturity or innocence isn’t much different from using pigtails to do the same thing so I think we can merge them. Maybe expand Girlish Pigtails to include double bun styles
As for the animal motifs thing, I feel those can just be folded under Animal Motifs because usually the motif goes beyond whatever hairstyle the character has to emulate their animal theme
Anything that has meaning but isn’t prevalent enough to have its own trope can also be folded under Meaningful Appearance.
I don’t feel there’s anything particularly special about odango/bun styles on their own. I feel like every meaning is covered by a larger trope.

Macron's notes

I dunno, stereotypical shorthand for an Anime Chinese Girl seems tropeworthy to me. Or maybe Fan Speak if it’s too redundant with Anime Chinese Girl?
