The Grand Unified Appearance Trope Clean-up: Currently on GrayEyes: Gray Eyes

Go To

Currently on the table: Green Eyes

There is on TV Tropes, a common bad habit that persists among editors of using appearance tropes, or names that sound like they could be appearance tropes, badly. They always suffer from the same problems and they tend to clog up the TRS like they're on a revolving door. As such I'm making a large scale special effort in order to address the common problems all of these tropes have.

Sometimes non-appearance tropes are mistaken for appearance tropes. Report them here and the clean-up will be handled.

We're going to search for the best ways to change the culture and make sure that the misuse stops. Tropes will be handled here and we'll likely have a fair number of crowners on this thread. Keep checking back for new developments.

For full details, including the to-do list and crowner list, check this post.

All appearance tropes that show more than 50% misuse and/or ZCEs on a wick check may be cut freely after posting the wick check here on the thread for approval as per crowner results.

The consensus was heavily in favor of the redirects. Shouldn't we be focusing on what to put on the disambiguation page?

Historically, many cultures did not differentiate between blue and gray eyes, and for real life people it can be hard to tell the difference. Eye color tropes (or at least Green Eyes) attract a lot of pointless hair-splitting about what exact color eye a character has, and I see no reason to encourage this by splitting what is essentially the same trope by subjective color differences.

Suggested disambig text:

Gray Eyes are a common eye color in some parts of the world, but they are not a trope. You may want one of these instead:

The suggested disambig text looks good.

A few weeks ago, ~lukaSylvie edited the description of Gray Eyes in several ways. I PM-ed them about it but they haven't responded.

They removed references to Meaningful Appearance on the grounds that it's not a trope (it is). Seems to me that we've been consistently treating Meaningful Appearance as a trope in this thread.

They also changed Icy Gray Eyes to Icy Blue Eyes and ditto for Innocent Gray Eyes. I'm not sure what the exact policy on using redirects vs main trope names is, but if the redirects are to be used on any page I think they should be used here.

Requesting permission/consensus to revert to the description previously posted/discussed in this thread so as not to cause an edit war.

I agree. If they want to change these things, they should discuss them.

As pointed out in this ATT entry, I don't think it's notable for Big Little Brother to include examples of younger brothers being taller than older sisters if they're both fully grown, since that's the norm. There are also a few examples on the page of second-born twins being taller, which isn't really unexpected at all.

Steel be with you.

I would agree, and I think that's already implied by the trope description, even if not stated outright.
