The Grand Unified Appearance Trope Clean-up:

Go To

On TV Tropes, it's very common for editors to misuse appearance tropes, as well as tropes whose names make them sound like they could be appearance tropes.

Meaningful Appearance tropes are often misused in ways that overlook the "Meaningful" aspect, resulting in Zero Context Examples and misuse in the form of examples that have no meaning even if the tropes themselves are not People Sit on Chairs.

The Appearance Tropes Cleanup sandbox covers tropes with potential issues. Tropes that simply require cleanup will go through this thread, while tropes that require more significant action will have to go through the Trope Repair Shop.

April 2, 2023 update: This thread is no longer for making changes to tropes, and was brought back from the Projects Morgue solely for cleanup. Making changes to tropes is still a job for the Trope Repair Shop.

if you combine everything into Finery, it should at least talk about the symbolic distinctions.

But yeah just having one trope is probably best.

We can have an Analysis page that breaks it down article of clothing by article of clothing, but just one page. The splits here are really distinctions without difference.

[up] There's an idea. I'll add it to the list of options that we can put on crowner, when we are ready to vote. So far the list I have is as follows:

  1. High Class Finery replaces tropes like High Class Gloves (and other tropes as necessary) and the other tropes are not maintained in anyway.
  2. High Class Finery replaces tropes like High Class Gloves but maintains separate folders for different articles of clothing.
  3. High Class Finery replaces tropes like High Class Gloves and only an analysis page, useful notes page etc. maintains different articles of clothing.
  4. High Class Finery becomes a supertrope for tropes like High Class Gloves.
  5. Do nothing with either one.

Looks pretty good. seems consensus is already leaning towards options 2 or 3.

I don't like 2 since I think that's going to end up with WAY too many duplicated examples. How many women only wear one article of clothing that can be considered High Class Finery after all? So you'd be chopping up their outfit into a hundred partial examples again which is what we're trying to get rid of. It also encourages violations of Type Labels Are Not Examples.

3 is the only one that I think will give us good, interesting high quality examples on the wiki. Anything else is just ZCE bait.

[up] That's a good point. If one character is wearing five articles of "High class" clothing than the same character will be in five folders. It's better to keep them in all together in one, consolidated, example.

It's good that we all agree here, but we should set up a crowner anyway. Something that changes or replaces a trope page should merit that. Should I make it or does someone else want to?

The TRS thread for Blond Guys Are Evil and Blondes Are Evil was nearing resolution, but has reached an impasse after what seems like people having misinterpreted the crowner.

Does that mean you don't want a crowner, or that we need to be careful when we create it?

You know, a quick way to fix these would be to just cut anything that has more than 50% ZCE and misuse in it's wicks. That way we wouldn't be trying to salvage things that are too far decayed. If there is really a need for them they can be taken to YKTTW once their misuse is no longer a bad habit.

That's pretty much the idea. Why waste all that time fixing something that is basically dead?

I agree as well. It would move things faster and we wouldn't get deadlocked as often.

I suppose I'll make the crowner since we need one.

personally i'm not in favor a blanket Slash and Burn tactic like that.

We might destroy something that has 50 percent ZCE's, but some really good fleshed out examples.

On a wick check, can't we just cut all ZCE's when we see them? A ZCE Purge would reveal what the trope is actually trying to get at, and leave it as a trope with 0 percent ZCE's after the fact.

We've tried that a lot of times before. What we've been finding is that even after clean up, even after splits and making new tropes, you just end up with a flood of ZCEs again. Heck, sometimes when we've been cleaning them the ZCE examples get added back faster than we can clean them, and generally within a month or two they're back to their old state. We need something more drastic or we'll just be cleaning the same tropes again and again forever.

We need to break the cycle of this troper meme, and sometimes that means doing something a little bigger.

We know at this point just cutting the examples doesn't work. Your idea is just keep doing the same thing that hasn't been working and hope this time it does.

As a blanket, automatic cut, no. Up for discussion and then cutting if no one wants to make an effort fixing it, sure.

Yeah, though the idea of long flowing hair (regardless of color) being a highly impractical hairstyle for a warrior in full-body armor does have merit. As long as it doesn't simply count as a Compressed Hair example, that is.

It's really just a feminine version of the standard knight in a shining armour, who often is blond because that's bright and good.
