TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

A few more comments and I'll pull the trigger on Pan Sexual and Ambiguously Christian. Also, replied to ^ in the discussion tab.

Jeweler's Eye Loupe Was launched with only 2 hats and having not been posted in for roughly 2 weeks.

It might be able to pass muster, so we might be able to leave it. Thoughts?

I think it's good enough.

I don't recall "plenty of concerns" about the description. It was mentioned once or twice, and the first person to bring up the length said they liked it and wouldn't know what to cut.

Before posting I got the wordcount of The Sociopath, a similar thread, and the description was shorter (if only by a hundred words or so). So its comparable in length to that.

Got a post a few days ago about adding The Paranoiac to the characters and trope pages it mentions; I've been busy since then, but I'll get on that now.

EDIT: I've cut a paragraph and merged two others into one; that seems to have made the description a bit easier.

Gonna bump to see if someone else has a comment about this YKTTW - I'll request Video Game to be redirected to it if/when it's launched to capture the 10000+ inbounds.

Septimus mentioned two of the pages I started.

Yeah, I'm running a rafflecopter starting in September. One of the methods of entry is to write trope entries for indie novels.

They can do this once a day in general. And once a day for each author that donated works.

So far, I've donated prizes along with 4 other authors. The series involved are Fearless Series, Saga Of Menyoral, Sundered Lands Saga and Turning Vampire Series. All four of which are by authors that have donated prizes.

Pages for my novels already exist. A friend "started" it for me a while back ago and I put some initial tropes on them before realizing that starting a page wasn't really all that onerous.

Remembering my own experience about starting a page here, I figured if we had a new contributor come to tvtropes and not know what to do, they'd panic and do nothing. I figure troping is an excellent thing for a fan to do to express what they like about a story, so don't want to scare them off.

So I decided to create some basic articles with one trope each for formatting example purposes and then left it mostly alone so that there were plenty of the obvious tropes available for people entering the raffle come September to fill out.

If I have more prize donations, which I hope to, I'll add more prizes. So far the four that have donated have been authors that I've read, so if necessary, I can go through and add more trope entries. And if they don't get much trope action in the contest, I'll probably do that so that these authors continue to get some good press.

Why not use the Sandbox/ namespace?

Could other people chime in on Creator.Gary Busey? I don't really have the energy to deal with that anymore.

I see that the YKTTW is picking up some interest - thanks to whoever hatted it.

Hello! The reason those links don't do anything is because I haven't made them yet.

The page is really a work inprogress. I don't know if it could possibly be made private until I have finished it which will probably take awhile because I am very busy.

Doomed Hurt Guy was not in YKTTW at all. I suppose there is a usable core, but it needs to go to YKTTW for straightening out.

Ran across UsefulNotes. The Kingdom Of Spain in cleaning up The Caligula wicks after it was voted NRLEP. The earliest entry in the history is Jan 4th this year, with no sign of having been run through YKTTW beforehand.

Given the formatting trainwreck and its relative newness, would it be better addressed here or in a TRS thread? In the latter case I'm afraid I don't really have the knowledge (or enthusiasm, admittedly) to guide it through the process.

^ If you're working on a page and can't do it by hand in notepad or some other text editor (understandable, at times what you think wiki code will render in the final page isn't what you actually get), you could save it in a sandbox page, f'rex Sandbox.Marvel Disk Wars The Avengers Characters, and then when you have it ready for final release just make up the appropriate /Characters/ page.

Doomed Hurt Guy: Remind them of YKTTW's existence and that we require Crosswicking either way; I don't see major issues otherwise.

I do see major issues.

  • About half of the examples are Zero Context examples.
  • The description say "Aversions are welcome" and there are some "averted" examples; but collecting aversions makes no sense for tropes that are not omnipresent. I may be persuaded these examples are subverted, but its hard to tell because of lack of context.
  • There is ambiguity in the description:
Regardless of which choice they make, the poor bastard is almost always still gonna die.

"Almost always" — so if they do not always die, then dying is not a necessary condition? And regarding their choice, can the heroes actually chose to leave the poor bastard to his doom? — Obviously that sentence ought to be "Despite them trying to save the guy, the poor bastard eventually dies anyway." In other words, the description bungles, of all things, the actual trope definition.
  • The description also says it is "a subtrope of The Load", which I contest. The Doomed Hurt Guy may be a liability to the team, but that does not mean he is a pathetic, uselesss annoyance. The point of The Load is that they are a liability even though they should be able to care for themselves.

Of course, I could fix all those problems. But I won't. I could also pm the creator and tell them to fix this stuff; which by experience does not lead to satisfying results. I would much rather send it through YKTTW, because this stuff is precisely why we have YKTTW in the first place.

~Thrythlind, if you add three tropes (with context!!) the pages will no longer be stubs and there should still be plenty more to add.

I'm scratching my head about Six Degrees Of Canada. It's tagged as a work, but there's no tropes. Also, it's in the Fandom index, which is about Fandom tropes, not works.

I'm also confused by Tvs Greatest Surprises. I'm not sur it fits as work, or anywhere.

Six Degrees Of Canada appears to be a combo fandom like Superwholock. I have no idea what TV Ts policy on combo fandoms is.

OK, so, replies and worklist:

  • Doomed Hurt Guy: <Sigh> Given that and this inconsiderate post on Ask The Tropers, maybe I should not trope at all during exam stress. Anyhow, calling ~Kooshmeister in for that page; I am fine with kicking it back to YKTTW.
  • Six Degrees Of Canada: That is a page about a fandom of multiple works; these are so rare that we don't have an established procedure yet.
  • Tvs Greatest Surprises: We have such lists elsewhere on the wiki, here and here. Methinks they ought to be discussed somewhere in Wiki Talk as a whole.

Removed mention of The Load on Doomed Hurt Guy and also made some of the proposed changes including adding the sentence "Despite them trying to save the guy, the poor bastard eventually dies anyway" as per instructions. Starting crosswicking.

About Doomed Hurt Guy: what Lord Gro said.

I appreciate the attempt in fixing it and cross-wiking it, but imo it still needs a run through YKTTW. I don't like pages (especially newly launched pages) with description that has Example As Thesis, examples that include Zero Context Examples, bad Example Indedntation, lack of Name Space in titles and with Word Cruft phases ("speaking of...").
