Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Does this qualify for a Museum Level? Since it's a separate download on the Steam Workshop, I'm not sure if it meets the "encountered through normal play" part of the trope's description.

  • For the Half-Life remake Black Mesa, a "Xen Museum" was released as a separate download by the developers. This museum lets you play through early Alpha and Beta versions of the remake's revamped Xen levels.

So from RelationshipWritingFumble.Western Animation:

  • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power:
    • Bow and Glimmer got this both ways. Writers and cast were describing them as Like Brother and Sister right up until the final season was about to be released, but a couple of episodes made it seem like Glimmer had an unrequited crush. Then, when they actually did hook up in the series finale, so little had changed about their relationship from the times it was described as Like Brother and Sister over the course of the season that many people felt like it came out of nowhere with less than half an hour of show left, making it a fumble from the other end.
    • To an extent this applies to Adora and Catra as well. While most saw their caring for one another from Day 1, between both being raised by Shadow Weaver and growing up together it's not a wonder that many viewers assumed they were supposed to be like sisters, at least until the series finale.
    • Word of God confirmed in interviews that Adora/Catra and Bow/Glimmer were the endgame plan from day one, which means that presumably the writers did not intend Glimmer and Adora to have as much Ship Tease as they did - even as they put in a scene where Adora's devotion to Glimmer literally saves her life near the end of the second-last season.
    • In a rare positive example, Catra and Adora's romance was supposed to be subtle. It was clear Noelle and the writers underestimated how much viewers would read into Adora's and Catra's interactions and quickly realized that Catra was in love with Adora.

This trope is about platonic relationships that fans interrupt as romantic at least according to the description and Laconic. At least two of these entries are about relationships meant to be romantic with most fans seeing it as such and one is just a romantic relationship some fans felt was platonic. Do these really fit with the trope?

I'll repost the Cars 2 example I mentioned on page 735. I still believe it's shoehorned, and will delete it if there are no objections.

  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Professor Zundapp, the Lemons and their boss, Sir Miles Axelrod. Just pretend that alternate fuel for cars is to oil what anyone or anything non-Aryan was to Nazism.

I still don't think this counts. The only similarities between the Lemons and the Nazis are things like "they use deceptive tactics to make their opponents look bad" and "they're willing to commit crimes to gain power", which are vague to the point of being meaningless. The Lemons lack basically everything you'd expect of a Nazi analogue: they're not a power-hungry political party, they use nothing resembling Nazi imagery or rhetoric, they're not out to exterminate people they find undesirable, they're not planning to start fights/wars, and so on. They're just sabotaging a competing product to keep people reliant on their product.

The number of fans who feel that they are platonic is very much the minority. Like most fans noticed the romantic subtext. Like I don't even think it was a vocal minority, but I could be wrong there.

Endwalker spoilers for anyone who cares about that, though we'll try to be oblique about them.

On Characters.Final Fantasy XIV Ascians, ~JK Roo just added an example describing a certain character as a Hypocrite. As near as we can tell, the explanation in the example text is entirely an audience analysis inferring that "The only pain he actually cares about is his own" contrary to his words; we don't recall the game portraying this as a flaw the character actually has. Is this still an example? The inference isn't unreasonable, we're just not convinced the game meant it like that.

On Win Back the Crowd,

there is a wick to Only the Creator Does It Right. But checking the credits across the Mario Party games, it seems that the dev teams were downright identical across the Hudson and Nd Cube games. So it can't be an example of Only the Creator Does It Right if the people who did the famed old games and the flawed new games are the exact same people.

It's always a Fan Nickname, but it'd also be Fanon if they treat that name like the character's actual name.

Does this count as What An Idiot? Because I found this in YMMV page of The Visit. I spoiler mark it for new user.

I don't know if Misblamed has a cleanup or not, but this is on YMMV.Sausage Party under that trope.

I don't get how the second sentence invalidates the first one. If anything, it probably validates the first sentence more, since it shows Rogen loves to put excessive swearing in his films and he probably finds the idea of food saying fuck a lot really funny.

Light/Fire Juxtaposition: They're never juxtaposed in-work, IIRC?

  • In Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra there is a clear distinction between the fire and energy the firebenders manipulate and the light of Raava and other spirits, the former being chaotic while the latter is pure order. Curiously, the sun is more associated with the former than the latter.

Question about an Ass Pull example from Spider-Man: No Way Home YMMV discussion

This has been on my mind ever since I first saw the movie. Does Ned suddenly gaining the ability to use Strange's sling ring and successfully open portals count as Ass Pull? IMHO Ned has NEVER displayed any sign of possessing potential to become a sorcerer before, and in this movie he has only a single line about magic running in his family which he said offhandedly to Strange as all we have as Foreshadowing, and we don't even know if it's actually true and that Ned does indeed have relatives who are actually sorcerers.

Moreover, we don't know how long it takes Strange himself to train how to use the sling ring to open up a portal in his own movie, but it's implied that it takes quite some time and he has to try again and again until it works, but here Ned inexplicably is able to open up a portal in just a few times by mere coincidence just because he really wish he could see Peter Parker. It really feels like this ability really comes out of nowhere just so the movie can bring in Peter 2 and Peter 3 into the plot in the third act. Any thoughts?

Wasn't Strange being unable to use the ring seen as weird by the other sorcerers? Ned's sudden powers did sort of come out of nowhere, but he was also never in a situation that required them, so I can't say it's that random. But that's just me.

IIRC Strange himself when he started out doesn't really believe in magic at all, and even after the Ancient One sends him on a multiversal ride to open his mind, he still has some trouble adjusting to the idea that magic actually exists, which goes against everything he once believed. This is probably the reason why it takes Strange quite some time to master the mystic arts once he changed his mindset and adapt to magic like another branch of science which takes efforts to learn and master.

As for Ned, while we could reasonably argue that he might have believed that magic exists already (especially considering he lives in a world where super soldiers, aliens, robots, and actual wizards exist and are now public knowledge) so he might have an easier time adapting to using it, the fact remains that he suddenly learns how to open a portal with Strange's sling ring without any prior training and/or motivation, just simply by sheer coincidence. Heck, even Katy in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings being able to make a lucky arrow shot in that movie - which is highly criticized - makes more sense because Katy actually has some crash course going for her earlier when she trained with the best archers in Ta Lo village, so her achievement doesn't quite come out of nowhere there.

TBF, Ned doesn't know how to close the portals. He's nowhere close to being an expert- he mastered one motion by accident in a time of need.
