Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Found on Misaimed Marketing:

  • In the mid-2010's, Konami decided they wanted a piece of the Gainax pie and started almost literally whoring out their characters and IPs on fanservice games (mostly Japan-exclusive, for reasons not at all unclear)—including on works that barely any sane human being thinks of as being sexy. This has resulted in weirdness like the infamous "erotic violence" Castlevania slot machine and an ecchi Bomberman arcade game. Much earlier than these are a Gradius slot machine with anime cutscenes and blatant fanservice, and a Contra slot machine with a fanservice character added for pretty much no reason. Predating any of these is Sexy Parodius, although that is at least a solid shmup game that merely has fanservice as a reward for doing well.

This doesn't seem like a valid example at all. It doesn't talk about the way the games that are brought up were actually marketed at all (though the Castlevania one has a trailer that is very upfront about it being a fanservice game). The anecdote about Sexy Parodius isn't particularly relevant, either. It's more of a Hotter and Sexier example than anything.

I found these on YMMV.The Ghost And Molly Mc Gee:

  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Molly and Scratch's first meeting; there is some Nightmare Fuel that she pops his facial features off, eyeballs and all when giving him a big hug. Then she apologetically reassembles him. His response is to tell her to go away, or she'll be cursed. There is just one problem: the curse is that he will haunt her, and Molly realizes that it makes them best friends! Scratch puts it best: "I didn't curse Molly Mc Gee; she cursed me!"
    • The scene where Molly confides in Scratch about her worries with starting school. It should be awful that Scratch realizes that if her first day of school is horrible, maybe she'll leave him alone. His efforts backfire; Molly realizes she's being silly, and thanks him for being her sounding board. Scratch makes a "-_-" face and decides that if Molly isn't going to sabotage herself, then he'll have to do it. Despite it being a despicable plan, his Evil Laugh makes it ridiculous.

I'm not fond of unilaterally removing YMMV, but at the same time, I cannot remotely imagine what "line" was crossed twice here. I'd really like to know what the troper who added these thinks Crosses the Line Twice means.

Found two examples that assumed that the character(s) might be prison raped. Bold words mean that I highlighted it.

From Red State

  • Cruel Mercy: At the end of the film, Keenan's superiors point out that they don't have to kill Cooper to keep him quiet. Instead they'll lock him away in a federal prison forever under the pretext of terrorism, where there is a high chance he'll be raped by the homosexuals he despises so much.

From Keanu

  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Whatever their ultimate intentions, Rell and Clarence did commit a bunch of crimes getting Keanu back, and unlike Hi-C, they weren't officially working undercover to legitimize their actions, so they have to go to prison. On the plus side, though, they wound up only having to do six months (which, considering they killed at least three people, is not too shabby. Although most of those can be credited as self defence), and avoided some of the worst possible consequences thanks to the respect they got for killing the Dresden brothers, and their friendship with what remains of the Blips.
About the first example, why they speculating that there will be high chance Cooper will get raped by homosexuals? This haven't be confirmed whatever this might happened or not. About the second example, why they have to potholed this trope that I highlighted it? Not everything is about being raped in prison. Do you think it's safe for me to remove the detail or pothole about that topic?

Is this Contagious Laughter, even though there's a gap?

  • Ravensong: From Chapter Fifteen: Stacey asks her Momma's name, and Stacey thinks she got a Literally Laughable Question response, but then the His Name Really Is "Barkeep" situation is revealed, which they both find humorous:
"Momma," she whispered hoarsely into her mother's shoulder, “I don't know your name.” Momma bent double with laughter so suddenly Stacey resented it.
"Momma is my name." She laughed so hard the words were hardly intelligible. She recovered enough to finish. “It was the first word your Gramma learned. She thought it was a name. Imagine having Momma for a name." Both broke into hysterics.

[down] - Well, I would have to add more if it is a valid example. Done.

From YMMV.The Talos Principle, "Game-Breaker: The jetpack from Serious Sam might just be an Easter Egg, but thankfully it can only be acquired after getting all the sigils and the star in the zone it's found in, because otherwise it would make the surrounding puzzles a joke as you just jump straight to the sigils. The rest of the game is anyways saved from this indignity by the jetpack being lost should you leave the area."

1. Even the example says it's an Easter Egg. 2. You can only get it after you've done everything in the area, so it can't be used in puzzles. 3. You can't go to other areas with it either.

So it's either Bragging Rights Reward, or just an Easter Egg, but doesn't seem you can "break" anything with it.

From the Video Games folder of The Moral Substitute:

  • A non-religious example is The Simpsons Hit & Run, which gained popularity among younger gamers for being a solid but still family-friendly Grand Theft Auto clone. The only attack is kicking, people who are run over just cartoonishly bounce around, the player characters hitchhike cars instead of stealing them, the worst that happens if the player is caught by the police is having to pay a 50 coin fine, and it's impossible to die at all - the worst that can happen is the player getting hit by a shot from the wasp camera enemies and losing coins. Fairly ironic, considering how controversial The Simpsons was at its peak.

Yes, given that Chex Quest is a valid example, should Fate be added as a moral substitute for Diablo? If not, then The Simpsons Hit & Run example should be removed (and The Moral Substitute is mentioned in the work page itself).

I found this in Recap. The Ghost And Molly Mc Gee S 1 E 2 First Day Frights:

  • Brick Joke: Everyone gasps when Molly mispronounces Andrea's name, even the class hamster. While trying to take Andrea to the nurse's office they speed past the teacher, who just turns around and goes back through the door she just came out of, not wanting to deal with it. When Molly is on stage holding an unconscious Andrea everyone once again gasps, including the hamster someone for some reason brought to the auditorium and the teacher also exits the door the same way she did before.

I think the gasping thing is alright, but for the teacher who exits the door, there was a very short time between the first time and the second time. Does is still counts as a Brick Joke? For a joke to be a Brick Joke, there should be a very long time between the first time and the second time.

[up][up]To me the teacher thing felt more like they were beginning a Running Gag, though it'll need to happen more times before it would count as that, but either way, it's not a Brick Joke.

[up]No, it doesn't sound like an example at all.

I found this on PhineasAndFerb.Tropes Q To Z:

  • Wham Episode:
    • The first part of "Where's Perry?" ends with Phineas, Ferb, and their friends falling into a gorge, Jeremy apparently breaking up with Candace, Perry suddenly vanishing after being hit by several inators at the same time, and the restaurant apparently losing Lawrence and Linda's reservation! Where's Perry is a two-part Cliffhanger where everything is solved in the second part.
    • "Happy Birthday, Isabella". Stacy finds out Perry's status as a secret agent, and doesn't get her memory erased. This is never mentioned again in the series.
    • "Night of the Living Pharmacists" has Isabella finally confessing her feelings to Phineas, though it is ambiguous if the two remember the event happening or not. The episode makes it clear that Phineas and Isabella forgot Isabella's confession.

I wonder if this also counts:

  • In the Distant Finale "Act Your Age", Phineas learns about Isabella's feelings for him when they were children, and Isabella admits that she did have a "big crush" on him during their youth, but gave up on it during high school. Phineas, in turn, admits that it is precisely during that time when he started having feelings for her. The two are saddened by the bad timing, but when Isabella mentions she's going to Tri-State State, Phineas makes up his mind and says that he'll be going too. The episode ends with a Big Damn Kiss between the two. I'm not sure if a Distant Finale counts as a Wham Episode.

This was removed from Characters.RWBY Adam Taurus:

  • The Starscream: The scroll Sun and Blake manage to retrieve from Ilia reveals that Adam is planning a coup against the current White Fang leader Sienna Khan. In "Dread in the Air", he carries out said coup and murders Sienna by running her through with Wilt.

Is this a valid example of The Starscream or would a different trope apply here?

Does the following work as an example of Clean Dub Name?

  • Undertale: "Death by Glamour", Mettaton's boss theme, is translated as "Kisei naru Shitou" ("A Glamorous Battle to the Death") in the Japanese version of the game. An interview with Toby Fox (translation here) discusses the name change, explaining that a more direct translation of the song's title ("Guramaa no Korosareru") would be impractical because when "glamour" is used as a loanword in Japanese, it refers to large bosoms and bottoms rather than fanciness and charm. Consequently, using the more accurate title would inadvertently imply the Mettaton fight involves Marshmallow Hell and Ass Kicks You.

I don't actually have any Bumblebee icons, I just think the nickname is funny.

Ehh

it's a song title, not a character name, and the Japanese title means approximately the same thing as the English (and is closer to meaning the same thing than the so-called "more accurate" title that would mean something wildly unrelated)

I hope no one minds me bringing this up again, but I didn't get an answer last time.

This is on It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown:

  • Designated Villain: Linus. He does act like a Windmill Crusader and believes in the Great Pumpkin for very little reason, denying any time that people try to convince him that he doesn't exist, which builds up into Sally's "The Reason You Suck" Speech. ...Except not really. Linus never forced anybody to sit in the pumpkin patch with him; rather just offered, and the only reason why Sally decided to stick back with Linus is because Love Makes You Dumb.

Like I said before, I don't think Linus is supposed to be a villain in the first place...
