Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

G&G seems to be alright, W&G does not have context for the "white" and very little context for the "gray". And how can a work be both at the same time?

[up] OK, fair enough.

Then again, White-and-Grey Morality lists on the trope page:

  • The Vampire Diaries veers between this and Grey-and-Grey Morality. Countless times, characters are introduced and seem to be mean but often turn out to have genuine motives behind their actions.
    • Anna seemed to be a sinister vampire using Jeremy for her own ends — until we found out about her mother, and her Becoming the Mask.
    • Damon seemed to just be trying to make his brother's life a living hell, and then his history with Katherine was revealed, and his gestures of humanity to Elena.

That's where I got putting both tropes from.

Isn't vampire diaries Black-and-Gray Morality. Heroes are morally ambiguous but villains are super evil scumbags.

[up] I've not seen the series for a long time, but thank you for pointing this out; we might need a Morality Tropes short-term project cleanup thread.

Is this Recycled Soundtrack?

From the same page, is this correct usage of these tropes?

  • Anyone Can Die: Or rather, anyone can be turned into an Empty Shell hellbent on destroying humanity without someone capable of reversing their condition. (yes I know this is a ZCE, I'm asking if it counts before I expand it)
  • Dark Reprise: In Week 4, Pico's verses are remixes of his tracks from the original game. (see comment on Anyone Can Die)
  • Forced to Watch: The eyes are always the last part of a victim's original self to go once the corruption overruns them, forcing them to watch as the rest of their body is transformed into an evil facsimile.
  • Grey Goo: The corruption is a supernatural example, manifesting as a tar-like substance that converts its victims by encasing them in the stuff and adding on claws and a new face. It's implied that the victims aren't truly brainwashed (at least not completely), but are being dragged around like a puppet and physically forced to spread the corruption further.
  • Painting the Medium: Original songs featuring fully or nearly corrupted characters will have their vocals muffled, referencing how the corruption covers their mouth and quite literally "silences" them.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: Corrupted characters will do anything they can in order to spread the corruption onto others. In particular, the description for the "Evil Boyfriend vs Senpai" video reveals that the Boyfriend forced himself and the Girlfriend into Senpai's Dating Sim simply so they could corrupt it. Aside from being corrupted, Boyfriend has no supernatural powers, so how he did this is anyone's guess.
  • Wingding Eyes: Averted. Unlike in the original game, the character icons on the health bar keep the character's eyes as they are and simply show the corruption spreading when the icon nears the edge. The exception is the first fight against the Mom, whose lose icon still depicts her snarling with X's for eyes.
  • You Can't Thwart Stage One: Or in this case, you're not gonna have a chance to beat the Boyfriend until you're corrupted enough, and even then you must have Plot Armor to even knock some sense into him.

  • Trial-and-Error Gameplay:
    • All games in the trilogy occasionally have spikes that will rearrange themselves or shoot out at you very quickly with no warning once you pass a certain point.
    • "Tribute" in 2 is a ghost house with loads of invisible teleporters you have to go through to reach the exit. Making the wrong move tends to teleport you above an inescapable pit of spikes.
    • "Skyclad" in 2 has a hidden passageway in the first fall, which is the only way to advance.
    • "Phantom" (팬텀) in 1 has a spike that will suddenly chase you back before you reach the exit.

Could I add this to the bottom of the Kamilia page?

I added this to WesternAnimation.Johnny Bravo, are these correct trope usages:

  • Artistic License – Biology: Owls don't fly onto the hand of people standing, even though the owl that hooted (a sort of fantasy tawny owl) perched on Johnny; they have to be trained by humans to do that.
  • Artistic License – Law: You don't just get thrown straight into jail in the Yukon doing Prisoner's Work just for sexually harassing a Mountie in the Yukon, unless it's really egregious; at best, this was Played for Laughs. Also, the RCMP do not wear their world-famous red uniform and campaign hat all the time (even in the Yukon), although this is done simply for making things easier to understand; showing the actual uniform of a Mountie could have been Values Dissonance for a foreign audience, and audience-alienating at worst.
  • Artistic License – Linguistics: Carl Chrynizzwics has an ostensibly Polish or Slavic-sounding surname, but there is little evidence of such a surname existing in Real Life in Slavic languages, and seems more like a case of Cypher Language with surnames.
  • Hollywood Genetics: Bunny Bravo appears to be a redhead under her hairscarf according to Fanon although it's not confirmed in canon, yet Johnny is blonde.
  • Out of Focus: Carl Chrynizzwics was severely under-used in the last season, and when he did appear, his Hollywood Nerd personality seems to have been neutered; his few appearances were simply as a cameo or the Butt-Monkey. He only really got two major appearances, "The Hunk at the End of this Cartoon", where he was used for a one-note joke, and "Run Johnny Run", as a Captain Crash driving a Fauxrarri that seemed suspiciously similar to a Mercury Capri.
  • Reused Character Design: Two of the Amish male characters, one young, and one old, bearded man (from the episode "Witless", a Satire/Parody/Pastiche of 1985 movie ''Witness') , are re-used for background cameos, but the woman who is the mountie in "Yukon Yutz" was frequently re-used for this purpose as a background character (she may have been Write Who You Know for one of the animation staff physically, if not as a character).

Is it psychic? It seems that there's nothing proving anything it says is true...

SCPFoundation.Tropes N To R:

  • Narrator: SCP-1376 is a video camera that gives its recordings a narrator a la certain British nature documentaries.
Subject: A static recording of a tennis ball placed on a table.
Narration: As noon approaches, it grows increasingly confused, as the creatures around it show no sign of using it for its intended purpose. Struggling to attract their attention, it becomes ever more distressed as it finds itself completely immobile.
    • It may also be psychic (or at least very observant):
Subject: An incidental recording of Dr. ██████ made by Dr. ████████ during unrelated experimentation.
Narration: Despite the male's calm facade, his lust for his female companion is extraordinary. The degree to which his obsession reaches has become nearly unhealthy, dominating his thoughts at every turn. Wild fantasies course through his mind when he watches her when she doesn't notice.
Researcher Note: Dr. ██████ was treated for a broken nose after being attacked by Dr. ████████ and both researchers have been placed on administrative leave for a period of no less than two (2) weeks pending disciplinary action and transfer to another site.

TV Guy 2001 edited an example on Cuties saying "Teenagers can't be pedophiles. It's an adult only thing. Prove me wrong sufficiently before adding it back".

Is the user correct?

Is the user correct?
No. The previous version was talking about "being labeled as pedophiles". It doesn't matter if they actually are pedophiles, which might depend on the age difference. And in the general case, teenagers obviously can be pedophiles, many pedophiles are attracted to toddlers. The rewrite is unnecessary and less clear.

If one must have evidence, I did find this definition:

"Pedophilia involves intense sexual arousal to children 13 or younger. To be diagnosed, the person must be at least 16 years old and at least five years older than the child they are attracted to. This is a rare condition in adolescents and only a qualified professional should make a diagnosis."

I'm assuming the teenage boys in this case are at least 16, given that the girls in the film are preteens. (For the record, I think it'd be creepy even if they were 15 attracted to young kids. It's all about power dynamics.)

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Are the following examples from War On Everyone being used correctly?:

  • The Smart Guy: Bob and his wife Delores frequently quiz each other on history, philosophy, and trivia.
  • The Snack Is More Interesting:
    • Hearing sounds of violence and a woman screaming prompts Bob and Terry to run in with guns drawn...and cheeseburgers still in hand. Finding a man skewered with a kitchen knife doesn’t deter them from finishing their burgers.
    • Played for Laughs as Terry administers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Birdwell. He pauses between punches to ask if Bob wants to grab burritos for lunch. Bob says "Nah, it's date night. I can't do Mexican." Terry shrugs and resumes beating the ever-loving shit out Birdwell.

Back on the topic of Cuties, TV Guy also removed the commented out note on the blacklisted tropes for no reason.

From EarlyInstallmentWeirdness.Animated Films:

  • A Bug's Life has this within a single film. One of the first ants we see gets lost when a leaf lands in front of him and he loses the scent trail he'd been following. The joke is that he's too stupid to simply walk around the leaf. Immediately after this, ants are shown to be intelligent and competent, and scent trails are never brought up again.

Does EIW apply to a single work, or only a work with multiple installments?
