Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Reposting from the previous page, so it doesn't get lost:

Given that this looks like a deliberate example from Blade Runner 2049 shouldn't it go under Fan Disservice:

  • Fetish Retardant: The ad campaign version of Joi, despite still being played by a gorgeous and nude Ana de Armas, has overtones of this. She shows up shortly after K's version of Joi dies, and clumsily flirts with K. Her dialogue's peppered with hints that K's Joi was just a really lifelike program, and not actually in love with him, to depress both K and the audience.

And from the same work, is this example being used correctly, seeing how the film did flop:

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: A sequel to the legendary Blade Runner has long been considered a bad idea by fans of the film. The fact that said sequel was in Development Hell for so long certainly didn't help matters, but there was still confidence in the project here and there given Denis Villeneuve's great (and still growing) reputation as a filmmaker. The film reached 88% on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to the 90% of the original) and scored 81 on Metacritic (89 for the original), and eventually won two Oscars for Cinematography and Visual Effects. Definitely not bad for a sequel that had a lot riding on it. However, this is somewhat mitigated by the fact that, like the original and despite its success with critics and fans, the film had a less than stellar box office performance, especially when compared to its budget ($150 million).

Found this on Characters.MCU The Hulk and... it doesn't seem correct:

  • Last of His Kind: At the end of Endgame, Bruce is the last of the founding Avengers who is still active as a superhero, even if crippled, with everyone else either dead (Black Widow, Iron Man), retired (Hawkeye, Captain America), or part of a new team (Thor).

Suddenly I'm... still rotating Fallen London in my mind even though I've stopped actively playing it.

[up]Right. Last of His Kind is for species.

[up][up] Knowing nothing else about the film, Fan Disservice seems more appropriate. I don't know if an Acclaimed Flop can count for 'failure' so more opinions on that are probably needed.

Regarding my previous query, I'm thinking the title isn't an example. Reading through the examples of Short Title: Long, Elaborate Subtitle, it looks like the trope is intended to describe really absurdly long, often humorously unwieldy subtitles. (I can't think of any work with a subtitle that isn't longer than the title, so if the trope covered my example it would basically cover all subtitled works.)

How much of the Method Acting section on Creator.Pedro Pascal, if at all, does the term really apply to? This quote from a German GQ interview with the actor has made me start to regret adding such a section:

I find it difficult to put emotions into perspective or to cast off problems. Method acting really wouldn't be for me at all.
  • Method Acting: He's admitted sometimes drawing from personal experiences to understand what drives his characters, and preparing even more extensively for certain performances.
Up until now, I’ve really only relied on the physical demands of whatever role I’m playing at the time. Like one character is a boxer, another can helicopter a spear through the air, and this one [Don John] sits on his ass and bitches all day.
    • For Game of Thrones, Pascal studied both the show-runners' notes on Oberyn Martell, and the chapters of A Storm of Swords in which Oberyn appeared; his above quote about failing to perceive Oberyn's flaws suggests he managed to adopt the prince's overconfidence. He also attributed his closeness to his older sister with helping him relate to Oberyn's determination to avenge his own sister.
    • For Narcos, Pascal underwent a week of DEA training from the real Javier Peña, as one of several cast members who interacted with the historical figure he or she would portray on the show. Pascal also had a hand in choreographing Javier's pursuit of Jurado, including a leap from a one-story balcony. Pascal concluded that the stuntman should focus on running and jumping like Javier — an out-of-shape "guy" who's "hitting middle age", but becomes driven by "a mad, dangerous rush of adrenaline" to catch Jurado — rather than an athlete, and showed him how to perform the leap with some out-of-breath stumbling.
    • For The Mandalorian, he apparentlynote  talks with a cowboy-like dialect in between takes, befitting the Space Western tone of the show. Additionally, at least one picture exists of Pascal wearing a Mandalorian helmet in between takes.note  When he records ADR, he copies Mando's motions while speaking, going so far as to use a pillow as a decoy for the Child. For scenes that Lucasfilm shot with either Brendan Wayne or Lateef Crowder instead of Pascal, he'd ask the double for Mando's thoughts and emotions while preparing for the dubbing session.
      • Enforced for an episode in which the Mandalorian suffers a case of head trauma; Pascal accidentally collided with a piece of plywood on his way to the set, and ended up filming the close-ups of Mando's unmasked, bloody, fearful-looking face, now adorned with at least one real scar in addition to the made-up injuries, after he returned to Lucasfilm from the hospital.

Should Infinity Train qualify for Killer App to HBO Max? It is considered one of the biggest reasons to get the service and quickly became the most popular show on it.

Is it me or does the following What Do You Mean, It's for Kids? example from Cuties as written seem like it would fit better under Same Content, Different Rating?:

  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: In France, the film was classified for all audiences. However, for the rest of the world, due to the controversy, it is considered an adults-only film. Even countries like Japan, which has a more flexible rating system, rated the film R18+. In some Latin American countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador, the film was rated 16+. There is at least one country where the film was banned because of its content.

Is the following example from Cuties being used correctly:

  • Critical Dissonance: The critic score on Rotten Tomatoes is 88%... but due to the backlash that resulted from both the film's Contemptible Cover and the accusation that it's blatant child pornography, the review-bombed audience score is a paltry 4%. Although granted many of the downvotes are from people who haven't seen the movie and refuse to judge for themselves due to the moral panic the terrible marketing caused.

Review-aggregation sites aren't the be-all and end-all of public opinion, especially with a controversial film like this that makes a probable target for review-bombing. How do non-critics who have actually seen the movie feel about it?

I've considered moving this Method Acting entry from Trivia.Narcos to either Throw It In or Enforced Method Acting, since it doesn't look like the script told the stuntman to stumble. Which of those two alternatives suit it best?

  • Pedro Pascal had a hand in choreographing Javier's pursuit of Jurado, including a leap from a balcony one story off the ground, concluding that the stuntman should focus on running and jumping like Javier rather than an athlete.
I thought, This guy is hitting middle age. This guy does not go to the gym. And yet there's a mad, dangerous rush of adrenaline when he's close to getting something done. So I think that he should stumble, and I think that it should look real; I think he should limp after... I showed them what I wanted to be done. And it wasn't that high.

I don't think it's any of them? This is the actor asking the stuntman to be closer to character, right?

  • Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped: Probably accidental, but "Addict" presents the important message that even if you are a porn actor or someone involved in sex work, that does not mean that you cannot be a victim of sexual or other abuse, and that such an experience is equally traumatic.

If it's "probably accidental", then wouldn't it go better in Accidental Aesop?

I have an entry I want to add to Artistic License – Geography for Web Original but does this fit:

  • Auto Trader (the British version, not the original American one) quotes distances "as the crow flies". For example, Uxbridge near London is 213 miles away from Liverpool and not 178 miles as quoted on the website - the site took 40 miles off its actual road distance, which is odd, considering it's about cars.

[up]x6. So should I remove the example. Also it's recently been changed to this:

  • Critical Dissonance: The critic score on Rotten Tomatoes is 88%... but due to the backlash that resulted from both the film's Contemptible Cover and the accusation that it's blatant child pornography, the review-bombed audience score is a paltry 3%, though some of that may be attributed to review bombing.

A Trope Finder entry I recently posted concluded with Fuzz Therapy being used to describe a furry character acting in a comforting manner. However, Fuzz Therapy mainly concerns itself with "traditional" creatures, not furries. What I'd like to suggest is to rectify that by adding this somewhere in the description:

  • Note that this is not limited to ordinary animals. A sufficiently fuzzy Beast Man (or woman) can also serve the same purpose.
