Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

From YMMV.The Andy Griffith Show

  • Family-Unfriendly Aesop:
  • One episode has Opie, attempting to emulate Robin Hood, stealing food to give to a homeless man faking a bad leg. To teach Opie a lesson Andy goes up to the man and offers to assist him in finding a series of jobs he believes the man could do in spite of his leg. The man keeps making excuses for why he can't do each one, until he runs off, revealing himself to be a fraud. In short, "never help the homeless, they're just lazy." Bizarrely, the finale scene has Opie point out that none of the jobs Andy offered were actually available, so if the man had been telling the truth and accepted one of them, Andy would have looked like a complete jerk.
  • Just three episodes after that we get "Aunt Bee the Crusader" in which Aunt Bee tries to stop Andy from evicting a man because of a highway project. Both sides make some really good points, but in the end it all turns out to be moot because the man was a moonshiner. As a result the message comes across as "never fight for someone else's rights, because they're probably criminals anyway."

I don't think these are The trope since it deals with unconventional or valid aesop. These examples might be more of a case of a Broken Aesop. At least the first one and not the second one.

I need a hand with these examples of Unholy Nuke in Kingdom of Loathing:

  • One of the damage types in the game is Sleaze, which dictionaries will describe as something like "moral corruption, often having to do with laziness". In game, this often manifests as inappropriate sexuality being physically harmful in the same sense as being set on fire. Subverted in that it also manifests as things that are physically slimy - like bacon grease, lard, or motor oil.
  • One of the other damage types is Spooky, which is causes physical damage from being scared by things, whether that be shooting skulls or spiders at someone, or something as amorphous as the fear of losing all your possessions, leaving you broke and homeless.
  • Stench isn't much better, damaging enemies with the power of spoiled milk, overflowing trash cans, or moldy cheese.

Sleaze is Not a Subversion, but I don't know how to write "this part of the game manifests two different ways, one of which is an example and one isn't" that isn't unbearable Correction Bait. Stench I'm pretty sure is just not an example; if you've ever smelled something really nasty you know your body reacts physically to that and you can imagine it going to a damaging extreme — and anyway, smelling bad isn't evil.

Spooky seems fine, at least.

Found this on The Cartoon Hero:

  • Unintentional Period Piece: As of late 2016 he took several pod shots at Donald Trump and frequently added more political opinions of his which will definitely show those videos as a product of their times.

Does Terms of Endangerment also apply when person X calls person Y by their first name to unsettle them? The trope description of First-Name Basis does say "For the creepy use of this by an enemy, see Terms of Endangerment.", but the description of Terms Of Endangerment itself only talks about nicknames and terms of endearment. It also says "Casual or informal forms of someone's name (like Tom for Thomas) don't count as this." But would full first names apply?

The example I'm thinking of is, in Thor: Ragnarok, Loki greets Bruce Banner with "Hello, Bruce" and an unsettling smile, while Thor only calls him "Banner" throughout the entire movie, which shows that "Bruce" isn't how he's commonly addressed even by his friends.

When doesn't Loki have an unsettling smile in the MCU? Later in that scene, Loki suggests "Why don't you let the beast out?" after two years of the Hulk not letting Bruce out. Loki knows which of the two beings he's talking to, while being a complete jerk about it.

Would most VideoGame.RPG Maker games count as having New Work, Recycled Graphics, if they use the standard sprites, sounds, scripts and other things, that comes out of the box?

Even though they're not recycling their own work?

I think this was missed for being at the end of page.

I've seen Show, Don't Tell used to list violations of Show, Don't Tell. I assume that's misuse as it's the opposite of that trope (violations should go under Informed Attribute or it's sub-tropes). Is Show, Don't Tell an index that shouldn't be used as a trope anyway?

The page type is Index, and it has no trope list. Have you found any uses that aren't misuse and don't fit in any of the listed tropes?

@Hjortron 18 Judging from the trope's description, probably no, this trope would not apply. Though I wonder if there is a broader trope that would.

Question about Idiot Plot. Does it require more than one moment of idiocy from more than one person (otherwise it's a moment, not a plot)?

From the Trivia.RWBY page: is the following an example?

  • Franchise Killer: While, as noted below, RWBY's popularity in Japan helped boost the franchise, it's been said that Volume 4 and the TV recut of Volumes 1-3 killed it in Japan, claiming the shoddy work on the recut as well as the "Save the World" plot Volume 4 kicked off turned off fans as they preferred the teenage school antics of the first three volumes.

Franchise.RWBY indicates that there are plenty of spin-offs, some of which have only just started (such as the novel series) and some which are still continuing (such as one of the manga series), and there's reference on the page to a comic book series in the pipeline.

So, as far as I can see, the only thing that may have died off is the Japanese dub (there's an entry on the page saying that Volume (Season) 5 is in Development Hell). I'm not sure what the 'as noted below' means in the example, except possibly for an entry further down the page that reads as follows:

  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: According to Burnie, Volume 1 wasn't nearly as successful or as well received as fans like to remember. Although it was never in any real danger of being canceled, a big reason they were encouraged to stick with it was due to the response in Japan, which was a market that Rooster Teeth had been trying to break into for years.

Speaking of which, is that one an example? It seems to be bordering on Examples Are Not Arguable language by admitting that the show was never in any danger of being cancelled, and it doesn't mention anything about Japanese interest definitely being greater than home audience interest (the entry only seems to be saying that there was enough interest for them to think they had a chance of breaking into the market and that this was a big incentive for them to keep going).

As described, those both sound like shoehorns.

In general I've noticed that people like to stick in Franchise Killer for anything that's been confirmed or even just speculated to have killed a particular project, even if it doesn't remotely qualify as a "franchise."

This example was just posted on Heel, is it acceptable?

  • Chris Morgan is infamous for a video of him ranting at customers and female workers in a Bagel Shop about how women on dating sites rejected him because of his height of 5'. The video ended with a customer tackling him and pulling his shirt over his head after Chris challenged another customer to a fight. The video caused him to receive much backlash and mockery across the internet. Chris used his publicity to sign a deal offered to him to fight other internet celebrities and even train with UFC fighters to prepare. You could say this uniquely made Chris transition from a heel in the original bagel shop video and for all the internet into an actual heel within the world of professional fighting.

Batman & Robin was listed as a Franchise Killer for killing Batman films despite the Batman franchise continuing. Last I asked it can apply to localized parts of a franchise, it just need a long time passed or official confirmation to say nothing new's coming out. Has something changed?

A question from YMMV.My Little Pony Equestria Girls:

Unless anyone objects, I intend to remove it since 1. Two days since the announcement seems too little time for there to have been a surge. 2. ALL fics set afterward are now Continuation Fics by definition so is that trope worthy (even if it had a proper ending they're be a surge)? 3. Cancelled is a stronger term than the official statement (it likely is but that's speculation).

"A particular continuity/series of Batman films" seems a heck of a lot closer to a 'franchise' than "the Japanese dub of RWBY", IMO.

HighCrate Since: Mar, 2015

Batman & Robin is an iffy one IMO. There was an 8-year gap between it and Begins, which is a while, but nothing like the gap between the 40s serials and Adam West, or between Adam West and Batman '89.

Also, it might have taken them slightly longer than usual to figure out which direction they wanted to go with future Batman films, but there was never any serious danger of the franchise being scuttled altogether. They were considering pitches for a live-action Batman Beyond adaption or adaptations of Batman Year One or The Dark Knight Returns, among other possibilities, immediately after scrapping plans for a third Schumacher film.
