Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

[up] Incest Is Relative tends to get used a lot for examples that don't have specific tropes. The closest trope for aunt or uncle incest is Creepy Uncle, which doesn't fit.

I've got this somewhat complicated example from ReBoot, and I don't know if it falls under The Other Darrin + The Original Darrin, or The Nth Doctor.

In ReBoot, the character Bob was originally voiced by Michael Benyaer. Bob was Put on a Bus at the end of Season 2, but he came back in late Season 3, now voiced by Ian James Corlett and also looking slightly different than he used to.

In Season 4, a character claiming to be "the real Bob" is introduced. He's voiced by Michael Benyaer, and looks like Bob did in the first two seasons. It's later revealed that this is an impostor, and he's been using Bob's DNA (for lack of a better term) to make himself look like Bob. It's shown that the impostor got this DNA from an injury Bob received at the end of Season 2, just before he was Put on a Bus, and that's why Bob now looks and sounds different. Bob ends up recovering this DNA and uses it to heal himself, which restores his former look and Michael Benyaer as his voice actor.

Bob's voice changing was not planned: Michael Benyaer only stopped voicing Bob in the first place because he relocated in-between seasons, if he hadn't done that, then Ian James Corlett never would've voiced Bob at all, and that entire plot point never would've happened. So is this a case of The Other Darrin + The Original Darrin (with a dash of Serendipity Writes the Plot) or a retroactive case of The Nth Doctor?

Reposting from the previous pages:

Considering how often Narm is frequently misused, can I get confirmation as too whether this example from Mortal Engines is being used correctly?:

  • Narm: The Movie. Mortal Engines' dialogue consists of wall-to-wall Stock Phrases uttered in complete and utter sincerity without even a hint of self-awareness about how ridiculous it ends up sounding. The only character to make this work to some extent is Hugo Weaving's Thaddeus Valentine, but coming from the rest it ruins much of what could've been a perfectly campy Steampunk opera.

Is this following example from Robin Hood (2018) being used correctly?:

  • Snark Bait: The fact that this is yet another Hollywood adaptation of the Robin Hood tale made not long after Robin Hood (2010) and that it follows the trend of turning classic folk tales into stylized action-packed movies invites a number of jokes.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order:

  • Face–Heel Turn: According to several sources, Barriss Offee, last seen in Season 5 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars committing terrorist acts and framing Ahsoka Tano, will appear as a Dark Side Inquisitor, confirming many fan theories that she had turned to the dark side completely after her status as the Seventh Sister in Star Wars Rebels was debunked by Dave Filoni.
  • I Knew It!: Several sources have stated that Barriss Offee will appear in the game, and will have undergone a full Face–Heel Turn to the dark side as one of Palpatine's Inquisitors. This confirms many fan theories, especially after Dave Filoni debunked the theory that Barriss became the Seventh Sister seen in Star Wars Rebels.

Sources (which aren't cited) are saying it but it's not officially confirmed, does it not count yet since it's still speculation?

As long as it's not actually confirmed in the work itself, it's speculation. Sources can say what they want; it's what in the game that matters.

Does Black-and-Gray Morality apply to Red Vs Blue? The "Black" part is definitely there, as four of the villains so far have a Complete Monster entry, but are the heroes flawed enough to classify as "Grey"? Each one of them, with maybe two exceptions, is either:

  • A complete and utter Jerkass
  • A former mass-murderer
  • A traitor
  • A shameless liar
  • Selfish enough to condemn an entire planet to destruction through inaction
  • Several of the above

Still, they usually make the morally correct choice in the end, their methods are hardly extreme by the standards of the setting and most of the time their negative qualities are Played for Laughs. Anyone has an opinion?

Apathy is Death. Worse than Death, because at least a rotting corpse feeds beasts and insects.

  • Internet Backdraft: The reveal that Starscream is not the seeker shown in the trailer and is instead Blitzwing has annoyed a lot of fans. it only makes it even worse as Blitzwing is completely unnamed in the final cut.

I say cut the "it only makes it even worse as Blitzwing is completely unnamed in the final cut" part since unless it caused a new wave of backlash (which I don't see given the move was well received), not this trope.

[up][up][up][up] Alright, I added those examples to Trivia.Re Boot.

[up] I say cut the whole thing. The movie's done very well, and the entry sounds like it's just a small group of fans that are "annoyed". Not really what I'd call a backlash.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before has huge Internet Backdraft entries and I'm unsure how much if it is necessary, and with all the cited examples in the first entry it feels closer to Unfortunate Implications, especially with the problem being in the book beforehand.

  • Ass Pull: Demise's curse. It serves as a completely out-of-nowhere and half-hearted justification for tying the fate of Link, Zelda and throughout the series.

How is it half-hearted? It provides better explanation than existed before. How does it come out of nowhere?

[up] a bunch re my Wham Episode question: I've already deleted the example once and I don't know where the line is between "we discussed this and it's still not an example" vs "oh some people agree with me so it's okay to Edit War" but only one response feels too close to the second option so I'd like more opinions

Is it a proper usage of Fandom Berserk Button to downplay characters relationships? For example, a character is revealed to have adopted their kids. After the reveal, many fans cite that they're not [x]'s character's "real parent" and only call their biological parent the character's parent, which is a Berserk Button to fans of the adopted parent.

Ferot_Dreadnaught Since: Mar, 2015
#7147: Jan 5th 2019 at 1:27:58 PM

[up]That depends. If they are treated as parents by the adopted, then it can count, otherwise not an objective fact so no.

Recap.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 7 E 25 Shadow Play Part 1

  • Fatal Flaw: Twilight, and to a lesser degree Sunburst, find this in their hero worship and adoration of Star Swirl the Bearded. They're so focused on the idea of freeing the ancient heroes and meeting Star Swirl that they overlook what should have been obvious: undoing the spell could release the Pony of Shadows, too. Star Swirl calls Twilight out on this in the next episode.
  • Idiot Ball: The Mane Six, and Twilight in particular, seem to carry this throughout most of the episode; they're so preoccupied with rescuing the Pillars that they don't even stop to think about the possibility that they could unleash the Pony of Shadows in the process. Even Starlight, the only pony who objects to this plan, just has vague concerns about the dangers of space/time magic, rather than anything about the Pony of Shadows specifically. It is implied that they thought that the sealing of the Pillars was a separate thing done to ensure the Pony of Shadows is sealed, and thus they thought they could free the Pillars without freeing the Pony of Shadows.

Idiot Ball is about out-of-character idiocy, Fatal Flaw give an in-character explanation and the last part argues there is a rational. Any objections to cutting?

I'm not trying to re-define a trope, but just adding to it; asking here to avoid an Edit War (especially as the /Discussion page probably gets lower traffic than this thread!):

For Frozen in Time:

Within The Multiverse, especially for major franchises, this trope is in play. It can sometimes go hand-in-hand with Retro Universe.

Also, this example I plan to add to that same page:

I want to check these fit to avoid Square Peg Round Trope and an Edit War.

[up][up]It's not an Idiot Ball if they have a reasonable cause to think the way they do. Idiot Ball does not work on audience omniscience (nor on speculation). The characters need to be uncharacteristically stupid for them to even begin to qualify for the trope.

A Fatal Flaw is a flaw central to the character. It's not an idea that only shows up for a specific plot event. It's usually the one flaw the hero needs to overcome to solve the plot (or fail, in a tragedy).

Neither trope is accurate.

[up] Twilight's over-idolization of her mentors and others is a constant flaw of hers ("Lesson Zero" is her trying to live up to her expected standards). The next episode is about her overcoming this and standing up to them. Removed Sunburst through.

IdiotBall.Western Animation

  • Every mane character in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic holds the Idiot Ball at some point, no exceptions. Even characters that would formally know better get turns to be a silly pony (usually in their own limelight episodes for spotlighting the character's personality flaws).
    • This can be justified if you consider that one of the main goals of the series (at least in season 1) was to teach young girls about common mistakes, so that they can avoid them and become better friends.
    • The entire mane cast is handed an idiot ball in the first episode of Season 2, where Discord manages to fool all the main cast but Twilight with tricks a person with half a brain wouldn't have fallen for. Twilight, the smartest of the group, somehow manages not to notice that all of her friends have turned some shade of gray and are now acting in a manner that is the complete opposite of how they usually act. And at some points Discord manages to trick them when he outright shows up in front of their faces. Yes, your ancient enemy whom you know loves sowing chaos is someone who is perfectly legit, guys. You can totally trust this guy. Admittedly, it didn't work on Fluttershy... so he just slaps a brainwashing spell on her face.
    • Special mention goes to The Cutie Pox, since Apple Bloom's entire family and everyone at school doesn't show even the slightest concern that she's been endowed with two cutie marks. That's the equivalent of someone's child growing an extra arm, and everyone just saying "He'll be a great piano player!"
    • The second season finale has everypony play a game of "toss the idiot ball", with Celestia tossing it to Twilight, Twilight tossing it to her friends, her friends tossing it to the local Big Bad, and the Big Bad simply taking the ball and running home with it. To elaborate: Celestia responded to a threat by increasing security for a wedding and tensing up Twilight, who then proceeds to accuse the bride of being evil based off her jerkass tendencies. This then led to her friends walking out on her despite a few factors that should have convinced them otherwise (the fact that she was a jerkass to them is one), which leads to the bride launching an all-out invasion now that her cover is safe... Unfortunately, she got handed the ball and caused mistake after mistake to happen.
    • Spike holds it in Inspiration Manifestation, since it's fairly obvious Rarity has gone mad with power, but decides to not tell anypony about it because he's afraid that Rarity won't consider him a friend anymore.
    • The fourth season finale has just the Princesses playing around with the Idiot Ball while the premiere just had Twilight's friends toss it around. Letting Discord, an untrustworthy Trickster God, to go nab the Big Bad unattended led to his Face–Heel Turn in the former, while Applejack led away the only thing they need to stop the thorny vines from attacking Ponyville in the latter.

None of this explains why it's OOC. When have they displayed the level of competency to expect better of them? (First episode of Season 2; they didn't know Discord could mess with minds such or experience with such foes, Inspiration Manifestation; justified by Spike's feelings, premiere: they had a reason but Did Not Think This Through). I'll remove them unless anyone can explain what makes them OOC.
