Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

I don't think that Hercules example would hit the radar, nor that it's an attempt at getting something past the radar, so no Getting Crap Past the Radar.

I think the Hercules example is trying to imply rape, which the censors would've forbidden if it was too blatant. I think it counts for Getting Crap Past the Radar, but not Rape as Backstory (because it isn't made explicit).

In general, I would agree with this (specific situations would cause me to differ from my general principle).

[up] - So, isn't Rape as Backstory then Implied, and therefore valid? Or is it too ambiguous?

Rape as Backstory isn't just "off-screen rape". It requires an explicit or implicit link between the trauma and the character's backstory. Given that Megara appears to be Hades's go-to suductress, I'm not convinced there is a link between rape and her personality.

There needs to be a connection made between that act and their personality. In Hercules, the rape is implied, but given her deceptive personality, I don't see a strong enough link between her pessimism/misongony/angst and the trauma of rape. Further material gives a different justification for her personality.

In The Loud House episode "One Flu Over the Loud House", the healthy siblings were trying to escape the sick siblings and they were trying to keep them out of the way by squirting them with squirt guns full of chicken soup. Is it an example of Soup Is Medicine? I can't tell, even though I wrote the trope. On the one hand, chicken soup + sick people. On the other hand, they're not really "taking care" of them.

Character: Coco Adel from RWBY

This character used to be troped as The Fashionista. Someone just rewrote the example, pointing out that Action Fashionista is more appropriate given that she's a fighter. I rewrote the example because it had grammar issues and then read the trope description.

The fashionista tropes require regular wardrobe changes that are not for plot-related reasons. The school students have two costumes in the work: their school uniform and their signature battle costume; although there have been occasional plot-significant costume changes here and there, there is no example of non-plot costume changing. Coco has only ever been seen in her signature costume — not even in a school uniform — so she has no costume changes, and certainly not the regular wardrobe change that the trope requires.

So, my question is this: is there a trope that the following example can fit to salvage it? Or should it be scrubbed entirely?

She does have a Girly Bruiser entry that is practically a Zero-Context Example. I'm not sure if Girly Bruiser genuinely applies to her, because I'm not sure we know enough about her personality. I'm thinking that, if it does, perhaps rewriting the Action Fashionista entry to fit the Girly Bruiser trope might be the best option, thereby killing two birds with one stone (save the example and fix the Girly Bruiser entry). What do you think?

  • Girly Bruiser: Likes clothes? Check. Hates it when said clothes or the places she acquires them are destroyed? Check. Fights with a big honking minigun? Check.

  • Action Fashionista: Although she's training to become a Huntress that protects humanity by fighting the monstrous Grimm they share the world with, Coco dresses very fashionably. She wears a beret and sunglasses at all times, even into battle, and her weapon is designed to look like a satchel that blends in with her clothing choices. The ammunition for her mini-gun is incorporated into her sense of fashion, becoming part of her belts and satchel strap. When the Grimm invade Vale at the end of Volume 2, she informs an Ursa that it should prepare to die because it has destroyed her favourite clothing store. During the tournament, she initially compliments Emerald's gunslinger style of fashion; however, when Emerald later smashes Coco's sunglasses, Coco completely changes her mind about liking Emerald. Her fans in the tournament stands reveal their preferences by wearing berets of the same style she chooses, strongly indicating that her reputation among tournament fans is based equally on her combat skills and her sense of fashion.

Can a rumor of something in an upcoming episode count under Urban Legends or is that just a false rumor (or maybe even incorrect speculation)?

Rumors do not make urban legends unless they are passed down for a long time and become part of the culture.

Is Turned Against Their Masters strictly a robot trope? I was thinking of a Justice League episode when the characters end up in the alternate world and there is the Justice Guild who are re-creations of the originals by a man-child with incredible mental powers. They turn against the one who gave them life again to save the world from him.

[up]If they can be redeemed, at all, they're disqualified from Moral Event Horizon.

[up][up]I don't think it's strictly a robot trope, as it describes itself as being about artificial beings, which can be biological. I'm not sure how pets or slaves count, but there are examples of those on the page.

[up][up][up]Depends on what's there. We do trope unpublished works if there's enough information about them to trope them on it. However, that only goes for the material that's actually there, and not what was planned to be (unless it's a trope specifically about could've beens).
