Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?
Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?
Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?
Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.
Useful Tips:
- Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
- Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
- Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
- Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
- Wrong: Badass Adorable
- Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
- When is normally far less important than How.
- A character name is not an explanation.
- Wrong: Full Moon Silhouette: Diana
- Right: Full Moon Silhouette: At the end of her transformation sequence into Moon Princess Misty, Diana is shown flying across the full moon riding a rutabaga.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.
Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.
For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

Two Narm entries from YMMV.Voltron Legendary Defender:
- The entire hostage exchange incident. From the sheer ridiculousness of Zarkon showing up in person and demanding Voltron in exchange for a single scientist, to the fact that the fully armored god emperor, who had previously had no trouble shrugging off attacks from the Red Lion, is ultimately killed with a sharp wooden stick.
- Keith's declaration when in the Quintessence Realm that Voltron "has more powers than we could ever imagine", punctuated by it firing Eye Beams. In addition to being already a fairly mundane attack to add to the show's obsession with Beam Spam, the fact that it also lets off a Rocket Punch and Sword Beam imply that the Paladins have to risk getting Drunk on the Dark Side just to use the most basic Super Robot weaponry.
The first entry misreads the situation (the "single scientist" is the father of one of the main characters, the sharp wooden stick is the final blow of a Rasputinian Death). The second is just Complaing, with no mention of unintentional comedy. Should I cut?
Cut them both. That's not what Narm is.
Narm in general has been widely misused for over ten years. I don't think it would hurt to start a cleanup thread for it.

You can find me here now. With respect to Changeling, Tabletop RPGs have always had a bit of a problem with Troper Tales because they don't always contain a lot of narrative in and of themselves, so people trope their game experiences as if they were objectively part of the work itself. This is wrong and should be nuked wherever found.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I deleted the Troper Tales. Thanks for the input.
Troper Tales about Tabletop RPGs is kind of like fanfics for source works: If the actual campaign as played by a group of people (like Critical Role) has a page, they can be listed there, but not on the game work page itself.

Check out my fanfiction!I remember that back in Troper Tales days, the strongest argument offered to keep them was precisely to give home to such gameplay examples.

Found this on Characters.NiGHTS into Dreams...:
- Stealth Pun: [Reala] Wears black-and-white makeup that makes him look like he's in KISS, and could be called a crazy, crazy NiGHTS...
NiGHTS is the name of the protagonist, and the character in question, Reala, is an Evil Counterpart of them.
I have no idea how popular KISS is in Japan, but regardless, this really seems like a stretch to me. This is what Reala looks like◊. He's not wearing makeup, that's just what he looks like, and KISS's makeup is a lot more elaborate than Reala's markings anyway.
And speaking of NiGHTS, I found this on YMMV.Sonic Shuffle:
- Counterpart Comparison: Lumina has been called a NiGHTS ripoff by fans, especially considering that NiGHTS replaces her when the game is played on Christmas Eve. She has also been compared to Cosmo despite the latter having made her debut after Lumina.
Lumina (and Sonic Shuffle in general) was heavily inspired by NiGHTS, so is it really accurate to call her a "ripoff" when the game openly acknowledges it by giving NiGHTS a cameo appearance?
I haven't really seen anyone talk about her similarities to Cosmo, so I can't comment on that, but shouldn't that go on Sonic X's page anyway, since that show came later?

Are the following examples being used correctly?:
From Slender Man:
- Audience-Alienating Premise: The film being centered around Slender Man would have been a big selling point in around 2012-2014 when games like Slender and the web series Marble Hornets were popular, but the character has fallen out of popularity in recent years (not least because of an attempted murder done by two schoolgirls so that they could "meet" the Slender Man which their intended victim barely survived), meaning that it would likely be unable to attract an audience. The fact that it was picked up by the very much unpopular Sony Pictures, which has become infamous for producing some of the Internet's most reviled movies in recent years, doesn't really help.
- Memetic Mutation: Cracking jokes about how dated the film is has become pretty popular.
From Mission: Impossible – Fallout:
- Memetic Loser: Jeremy Renner became a real life one when it was revealed Brandt wasn't included in the film because they figured he'd be busy with Avengers: Infinity War... except then he wasn't in that movie either!note
- Tough Act to Follow: Trailer-wise. The second trailer was still warmly received, yet many liked the first trailer better, all because of its soundtrack and pitch-perfect editing that didn't give away too much of the plot.
Reala generally looks like a clown/jester. I guess if he wore leather and spikes, a case can be make. Also, I don't think there's no wrong answer for Counterpart Comparison since it's fans compering one character to another.
Question about Franchise Killer. Does it need some kind of official word on the matter? And how do killing parts (Batman & Robin is listed despite the Batman franchise as a whole being uninterrupted, just the film medium)?
Delete the Memetic Mutation example. Making jokes about how dated the film is isn't a meme in itself. Also, delete Tough Act to Follow because I don't think that could apply to trailers.
While an official confirmation is preferred, I think it's safe to list Franchise Killer if the most recent installment was a flop and an abnormal amount of time passed without even news of a new installment (I'd say 5 or more years is safe) or if the next installment is some sort of Continuity Reboot. And I believe Franchise Killer can apply to the plug being pulled on only certain sections of the franchise.

I went ahead and deleted the Stealth Pun entry, but I'll leave the Counterpart Comparison one up for now.
This was added commented out from YMMV.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 8 E 16 Friendship University:
- What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: Oh dear sweet Celestia, please nobody draw analogies between Friendship University and Cozy Glow's implied collusion with Flim and Flam and American politics.
Is this possible ROCEJ worth keeping if it doesn't explain the connection and they weren't even sure enough to add without commenting out?
Doesn't really explained what's going on. Delete.
What about the Audience-Alienating Premise and Memetic Loser examples I brought up ()
Don't think an Actor can count as one. Could violate the real life issue.
The following example in Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS Ep 60 Brave Max The Loser:
- Easily Forgiven: Kusanagi cares more about the fact that Yusaku and Takeru both returned safely (after Bohman's second defeat) than Yusaku's failure to obtain a lead on Jin's memories.
Is this an actual example?
Doesn't look like an example.
@Andrixx: Audience-Alienating Premise is for works that are targeted at the wrong audience, or there's something obviously weird or unpalatable about the work. That example seems more like something that just jumped on the bandwagon a bit too late.
"It's just a show; I should really just relax"Does Freudian Trio still apply when the three characters in question are parts of a Literal Split Personality?
I was thinking about adding this to Sonic Shuffle, with Lumina being the Superego, Void being the Id, and Illumina being the Ego. Illumina is the original, whole character, and she splits into Lumina and Void at the beginning of the game.
From The New Mutants trivia page:
- Follow the Leader: Rumors suggest that the reshoots being done are to make the movie more of an adventure-horror experience akin to Stranger Things and IT, but with superpowers, as opposed to the horror movie that the project was originally set to be.
To me this seems like Speculative Troping. I don't feel it's worth mentioning if it's only rumors, and I think we should wait until the film is actually out before deciding if it qualifies for this trope. But I wanted to consult with the thread first before cutting.
I agree.
Frankly, I think all pre-release media should be barred from examples until the media is released.
These entries violate the rules that forbid Troper Tales and the use of This Troper, in addition to being a nattery mess. They should be deleted.
