Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

That's a little irritating because Cool People Rebel Against Authority is an aggregate trope, for which only particularly illustrative examples should be listed. However, as written, it looks like it fits the criteria.

That's one reason I made a point of checking (though I'm admittedly not sure what you mean by aggregate trope in this case). My understanding is "Well-liked/"cool" character who rebels against authority" which HP definitely fits. I might wait to post it to see if next week's updates give anything else that can be added to it beyond speculation.

Though as a central character and with Alt Text getting in on the action, I think we have "particularly illustrative" covered.

Should there be a Jimmy Neutron section for the Western Animation part of the Four Temeperaments page? If so, I think it should be like this:

Jimmy and Cindy (choleric) Carl (melancholic) Seen (sanguine) Libby (phlegmatic)

Is this right?

That is a Zero Context Example. In addition, I don't think multiple characters per temperament are allowed.

~Pinkie Cake 207

For clarity's sake, a "Zero-Context Example" is a trope example that tells the casual reader nothing about how/why a trope and work go together.

In this case saying "this Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius character fits this temprament of a Four-Temperament Ensemble" means nothing to someone unfamiliar with the show, the trope, or both.

Also the main trope page itself has these notes in them, though they aren't visible unless you look at the page source or edit the page

  • All examples that have more than four characters are to be deleted.
  • All examples that use more than the original four temperaments are to be deleted.
  • All ZCEs that don't explain how the characters fit the types are to be deleted.

So the trope, in order to be an example requires an explanation of how four characters, and only four characters, fit into the four tempraments, and only the four tempraments.

Your specific example has the four tempraments, but names five characters and does nothing to explain why they fit.

Portal Crossroad World

Does Portal Crossroad World need arrivals to be able to leave?

I made this:

Thinking about adding Fanfic.Tales Of The Canterlot Deportation Agency, what with hundreds of humans coming from multiple other worlds to Equestria... But leaving is the tricky part...

Super-Sargasso Sea calls itself Portal Crossroad World, except "it's easy to enter but significantly harder to leave"... but Super-Sargasso Sea's laconic is:

"A place where all lost and forgotten objects and beings go."

Pun-Based Title and Double-Meaning Title.

I called this a Pun-Based Title, but does its literal accuracy make it more a Double-Meaning Title?

I'm wondering if this example from Hypocritical Fandom in YMMV.My Hero Academia was rightfully deleted?

An infamous example emerged on April 8, 2018 when Horikoshi tweeted a drawing that consisted of the female cast in bathing suits to celebrate the start of Season 3. Several fans criticized him for it, claiming that the drawing sexualized the female cast. Ironically, the same fans who attacked him were posting yaoi of the male cast.

The person who deleted it gave this reason.

Yeah, that's not hypocritical. A: There is a difference between female and male characters being sexualized. B: Yaoi isn't inherently sexualizing. C: There is a difference between the author and a fan creating this kind of art.

I feel it's still an example since it's not like fandom don't sexualized characters in show.

From YMMV.Mamma Mia Here We Go Again

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: A prequel to an extremely divisive show/film, with Meryl Streep's character being dead, and built around ABBA songs that either weren't popular enough to make it in the first time or, like "Fernando", could only be very awkwardly made to fit in. Alternatively to the second point, Here We Go Again having to rely on several ABBA songs that weren't used the first time around made some people (read: ABBA superfans) very, very happy...

Is this really the case? Cause the reception of the film sure makes it seem like the audience wasn't alienated at all.

[up][up]A) is simply not true, that is a Double Standard. B) is also inaccurate, as yaoi is almost always about sexualisation. C) seems like a valid reason though.

[up][up] I think the first sentence would cause alienation to fans. The rest sounds confusing.

[up] Would it still count as Hypocritical Fandom? I mean if fans who have sexualized creators' creations getting mad at the creator doing the exact same thing, though fans are known to go further, it would look Hypocritical.

[up][up] Enjoying something in fanon doesn't mean wanting it in canon. This applies to a lot of things - NSFW, darkfic, etc. For example if a source material has kids among its target audience, it's reasonable for people to expect it to remain kid-friendly even if those same people create or enjoy NSFW fanworks for it.

YMMV.Star Wars 9

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • After the backlash Rogue One got for its Uncanny Valley inducing attempts to digitally recreate the likenesses of Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher, and also out of respect for Fisher's passing in late 2016, Lucasfilm has made it clear that they will not attempt to digitally recreate Fisher's likeness or performance for Episode IX.
    • Although The Last Jedi basically erased any possibility of this movie being overtly similar to Return of the Jedi due to the nature of that movie's Wham Episode ending, Rian Johnson outright confirmed that the movie will not have another Death Star-like weapon shortly after the release of his movie. However, Johnson has stated he has no control over where the franchise goes after his turn on Episode VIII. So take this with a grain of salt.
    • One of the complaints concerning The Last Jedi was that the friendship between Rey and Finn was mostly ignored, keeping the characters separated until the very end, culminating in a single hug. JJ Abrams has promised that Rey and Finn will spend more time together in Episode IX. When Daisy Ridley and John Boyega found this out, they were both elated they would get to spend more time on screen together as they had during TFA.
    • One of the main concerns over Episode IX is that aside from Chewie and the droids, it seems as if the heroes from the Original Trilogy will all be absent from the film (Han was killed by Kylo, Leia will be out of the picture and most likely dead due to Carrie Fisher's death, and Luke is one with the Force, although he could possibly come back as a Force Ghost). And at the same time, one of the more minor complaints about the first two sequels is Lando Calrissian's absence from them. Lando has been since confirmed to be returning for IX, played by Billy Dee Williams, no less.
      • And shortly before filming began, they had the decency to confirm Luke is indeed in the film as a Force Ghost, and they were even able to repurpose some deleted shots of Leia from The Force Awakens to give the character a proper closure.

These were commented out arguing "Authors Saving Throw happens when an author makes a change in the work based on an Audience Reaction. This is more than just "listening to fans complain". Since it is about changes after the fact, anything written before the work reaches the audience is exempt even if it addresses potential complaints." These are supposed to address complaints from prior works, so what is the line between listening to fan complaints and fixing them? Should I just remove them because we can't tell if it will succeed until it releases?

That Hypocritical Fandom example from YMMV.My Hero Academia sounds like an example the way it's written.

A is just not true, or at least not true in a way that matters for the trope.

B is only true if you use a specific definition of sexualised that ignores that yaoi is explicitly a genre that's about relationships in certain sexualised patterns. It also ignores that the example implies it's sexualised.

C can be debated, but considering the author's piece here was a tweeted drawing rather than something from the work itself, I think it's easily comparable to fanart. The issue here is more whether it was the same fans who complained and posted the yaoi. The example claims it's the same fans, so going by that it fits.

Whether fans want something different in the original work as they want in fanworks is irrelevant. It's still hypocritical, as long as it's the same fans. To judge further would require more context, such as exactly what those complaints were, and at what ages the yaoi is appropriate for (although both are still presumably appropriate for the fans who create the yaoi, so it probably doesn't matter).

I'm wondering if I didn't jump the gun a bit on removing part of this example from Adults Are Useless. I took out the second half, about Marika, because it didn't sound like an example at all. Not even a subversion since, as written and from my own fuzzy memory of the series, there was no expectation that adults would be useless. I'm also iffy on the first half with Ryousuke, but I've left it alone aside from adjusting the indentation and removing the word "twice" since adult intervention makes the difference there.

  • Subverted twice in Bokura no Hentai:
    • Ryousuke tries to avoid telling others that his mother has fallen mentally ill in the wake of his sisters death, and that he dresses up as her to appease his mom, however when his girlfriend finds out she confronts him about his crossdressing, learns his reasons why, and gets him to allow her parents to get involved. Ryousuke's mother is then sent to a mental health facility, where she's shown better later, and he gets sent to live his father.
    • Marika is transgender and was having fears about puberty. With the encouragement of her friend and his family she came out to her mom, who was understanding and took her to a doctor. She then began going to school as a girl. The adults treat her fine but some of her classmates on the other hand...

Music Genres aren't tropes, right?

Because they are listed in Music Tropes.

And used as tropes on VideoGame.Crypt Of The Necrodancer:

  • Music Tropes: The game includes a huge variety of genres in its soundtrack:
    • Blues: Deep Blues theme.
    • Chiptune: Jake Virt Kaufman's soundtrack.
    • Disco: Girlfriend Records' version of Zone 1-1's theme shows shades of this.
    • Electro House: A_Rival's soundtrack, combined with some Dubstep elements.
    • Genre Roulette: The OC Remix soundtrack in Amplified offers a variety of styles by various artists.
    • Heavy Metal: FamilyJules7X's soundtrack and Death Metal's theme.
    • Hip-Hop: Fortissimole's theme, which can vary depending on the soundtrack. For example, FamilyJules7X's version is Rap Rock.
    • Synthwave: Girlfriend Records' soundtrack, inspired by 1980s Synth-Pop and New Wave Music.
    • Trance: Zone 3-1's cold theme is influenced by this genre.

ReBokura no Hentai: I don't think either of them as written are examples. However, the Marika example I think would count. Marika is very scared of coming out to her parents considering her long history of being forced to dress/act like a boy, so it's a surprise when they are supportive and immediately let her transition. Not sure about the Ryousuke example, but in general it's a story where There Are No Therapists and all the characters have serious issues that go unnoticed and unaddressed by the adults around for most of the story, so it is a bit of a surprise when adults start to help with anything.

I'm not sure I agree. My understanding of Adults Are Useless is that the adults are consistently shown to either be incompetent, apathetic and/or their intervention actively makes things worse or more difficult.

None of those really apply in this case. The worst you can say is the kids' issues go unnoticed, as you noted. However, for Ryousuke, he was actively hiding what was going on from anyone who might help him. For Marika, her mother sincerely did fail to notice her issues. In both cases, though, once adults were made aware, they acted and acted positively.

Is this an example of Diabolus ex Machina in Anime.Darling In The Franxx

With a handful of episodes left, APE are suddenly revealed to be aliens, the Klaxosaur Princess posthumously leads Squad Squadron 13 to both a convenient spaceship and a convenient warp gate to the VIRM homeworld, and Zero Two physically transforms into Strelitzia despite has her soul ripped from her body remaining on Earth. and put into Strelitzia. This is all clunky setup for Hiro and Zero to carry out a Suicide Mission which (though your mileage may vary) is not doesn't really cohesive with fit the overall narrative or tone of the show and ends with their reincarnation souls reincarnating a thousand years hence, which isn't really consistent with despite the setting.show not dabbling in the metaphysics of the afterlife at all.

Before hand nothing was going right for the heroes to be a sudden tragedy.

From Sonic the Hedgehog:

  • Later-Installment Weirdness: The games from Sonic Adventure and on took the series in very different directions both in tone and gameplay, especially in the mid-2000s. Having human characters appear on a regular basis, the tone generally becoming more serious, the Chaos Emeralds being significantly played up in importance, and having new superpowered villains taking the center stage away from Eggman are just some of the many ways the later games contrast the Classic era of the series.

Considering the Classic era lasted only 8 or so years, and Adventure came out 19 years ago, wouldn't the Classic games be Early-Installment Weirdness?

[up]Does that account other adaptation of Sonic? I'm no expert but i think the comics dealt with serious issues and they came out around the classic era.
