Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Japanese Tourist's description says later portrayals include Chinese and Korean tourists, but I didn't see any examples of those in the trope list, so do those actually also count for the trope?

There are two entries on CharacterDerailment.Video Games for Mass Effect that look dubious to me:

  • How about Cerberus' top hitman Kai Leng, Who when introduced in Retribution, comes off as ruthless, intelligent and quite the manipulator. Come his appearances in Mass Effect: Deception and Mass Effect 3 Leng is stripped of any of his more engaging traits and is little more than his boss' named Elite Mook.
  • Liara T'Soni is a lesser example. In the first game, she's an innocent archeologist and rather naive about the various dangers present within the galaxy. By the second game, she has become a ruthless information broker and killing people in her way isn't an issue in her war against the elusive Shadow Broker. There's a bit of a Broken Base among fans debating whether or not this is Character Derailment or Character Development. The Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC would later make an attempt to reconcile these portrayals, with Liara admitting that her new persona was simply a front put on to survive in the criminal underworld, a coping mechanism to cope with Shepard's death, in addition to the lingering guilt over turning Shepard's body over to Cerberus, even if it was to prevent the Shadow Broker from acquiring it for the Collectors.

First of these has too little context; as is it looks more like a complaint that he's underutilised than actually derailed. The second admits it can be read as justified change.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

Does Composite Character actually apply to automobiles? Because these examples on the page seem questionable at best and shoehorned at worst to me. It feels like one degree away from IRL.

  • Chevy Colorado, after being discontinued in North America for years, has returned there, but it's based off of a Thailand-Brazilian GM project that had been released three years before.
  • The Ford Ranger is also from a similar background, only being available to this market after more than six years. The new North American Ranger is built on the international T6-based Ranger chassis which the rest-of-world Ford Rangers are based on, as opposed to previous-generation Rangers which were vastly different vehicles.

This is from a character sheet on Characters.RWBY The Heroes and is about a character death.

Isn't Cruel Twist Ending a plot trope about how a story ends? Is it misuse to use it for a character death?

Looking at the trope description, the trope seems like it's about when the story ends by subverting the ending that appears to be about to happen with a twist that is cruel to the protagonist for no other reason than to be cruel to the protagonist. This entry doesn't even try to explain what's cruel and why it's solely about cruelty and nothing else. As it stands, this is just a character death that occurs in a still on-going story that has in-universe reasons for occurring, but wasn't popular with the fandom.

  • Cruel Twist Ending: As a Robot Girl who seeks normal relationships with people, obtaining the Winter Maiden's power at the end of Volume 7 reaffirms what Ruby has always stated: Penny is a real person with a soul, regardless of her robotic body. However, in Volume 8, Watts hacks her body to force her to open the Vault of the Winter Maiden and then self-terminate. The heroes save her from this by using the Relic of Creation to transform her into a living person only for Cinder to subvert the Pinocchio ending by fatalling injuring her shortly afterwards. Penny convinces Jaune to speed up her death, thereby allowing her to pass the Maiden power to Winter in order to protect them from Cinder.

[up] Yep, it's an ending trope (ending of episode, arc or overall story/work).

If the character death overshadows the other aspects of the ending for that installment (volume 8?), it might qualify. But, if so, the example should be written with that context in mind.

If not... doesn't sound like a valid example.

And either way, it's not really a character trope that should be on a Characters page.

Yes, it's Volume 8, which is already troped as a "Ray of Hope" Ending because of what the villains achieve (Penny's death is just one several really big things that knock the heroes back), but with a small sliver of hope to suggest the surviving heroes might be able to come back from this later on. Volume 9 then deals with the primary heroes reeling from Volume 8's ending before concluding with a Surprisingly Happy Ending due to the heroes being back on form and ready to get back into the fight.

I've removed entry for not being a character trope, and because the volume's ending is troped as a different kind of Ending trope.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse:

  • Continuity Lockout: While the plot of the film is perfectly coherent as long as you've watched Into the Spider-Verse, but the film is absolutely loaded with references to previous Spider-Man movies, comics, video games and cartoons - which you won't be able to appreciate if you're not a voracious consumer of all things Spider-Man. Miguel's explanation of "canon events" won't mean as much to you if you haven't seen/read/played a good chunk of Spider-Man material before.

The reason I doubt this entry is because a similar "the plot is coherent but you won't appreciate the references that drive the plot forward" entry was cut from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, despite that seemingly having a bigger effect on the Critical Dissonance. Is it because the tenets of the Spider-Man "canon events" rely on you to understand past Spider-Man canon? Because as someone who's never seen any Spider-Man media firsthand (but knows the basics of Peter's backstory), I thought the movie was completely comprehensible, barring a few references to villains I didn't know.

I don't think the "bazillion spidermen" aspect of it counts — they're really easter eggs that don't cause any 'lockout' to the plot — but I can see the argument for keeping the 'canon events' because that's the emotional crux of the film. It's something that might come off as arbitrary if you haven't seen all those police captain deaths and such in prior media. The film busts out a bunch to try to get you to feel the weight of it, though.

IIRC, there's a trope currently in TLP that may better fit the Spider-Verse/Mario movie "there's an enormous amount of continuity references and in-jokes that aren't essential to the story but are more appealing to long-time fans" thing than Continuity Lockout would.

Oh that's perfect to hear — I've been thinking we could use an item like that, as there's a lot more Continuity Porn in franchise media lately and in the case of at least Mario it definitely affected its Critical Dissonance.

In Harvest Moon, is this a proper use of Awesome, but Impractical?

* Awesome, but Impractical: The golden hammer lets you smash large boulders in a single hit, with less stamina cost than hitting them six times with the small hammer. However, by the time you can get it, you'll probably have removed all the large boulders from your property already; the only real use for the hammer at that point is to remove broken fence pieces, and the small hammer works just fine for that (and costs less stamina per hit). The only real reason to upgrade your hammer is because you get 20 happiness points for doing it.

It kind of reads more like Useless Useful Spell since ABI is for useful and powerful tools/weapons but with costly drawbacks for balance purposes.

I still had no idea how nobody mentioned this, but there is a tropeslash (due to ambiguous trope) in Pokémon Vietnamese Crystal (and it's SELF-DEMO PAPER), and Tropeslashing is frowned upon according to How to Write an Example.

Cue Card Pause / Verbal Back Space :
Silver: I AM ... I AM A MONSTER
[next page]
Silver: ...COACH
Admittedly, the former trope does actually contain the same example on the Video Games tab, but the latter does not. However, the Funny page instead potholes the Verbal Backspace trope instead.

Can a separate line not coming out in the initial text due to game size limitations be considered as a Cue Card Pause?

Also it could use a better context because just simply quote is in ZCE risk, but my best description is that it's not only the time it happens, and it frequently happens due to both the Translation Train Wreck and in-game textbox message limits. (This is only for the original page though, the SDA version does have some words on it)

Star Trek: Resurgence

  • Improved Second Attempt: The TNG episode,The Last Outpost, was meant to introduce a formidable new threat to oppose the Federation with the Ferengi, but due to how absurd many found their design and heavyhanded characterisation as a criticism of rampant capitalism, this didn't work out. Resurgence instead uses the Scions of the Flame, a fanatical sect of the Tkon, also introduced in the same episode as a long dead but powerful precursor civilzaion, who seek to restore their empire. With their technological superiority, and insidious method of conversion, the Scions succeed where the the Furengi failed, in being a serious threat.
