I wonder if we can report the misogyny derails ...

I'm sorry, but you ARE tasting your own medicine for once [lol]

I'm not expecting this thread to last anyway, since an inability to discuss misandry calmly in one thread does not bode well for it in other threads.

All the same, I'd rather stick as closely to the topic of misandry in video games as possible.

[up][up] That seems like a good reason to keep it around. Keep the misandry talk contained.

I'd certainly like that.

@Karalora: Maybe you should make another one. Or one for this topic in media in general.

No thanks, I'm actually relishing this chance to join a discussion on the matter that someone else started.

I kinda get the feeling this topic is gonna descend into Strawmen argument vs. Strawmen argument though.

Not if we don't let it. We've had some interesting discussion already, about expendable male Mooks and such.

I really do wonder if we are hard wired as a species to feel a protective urge toward women.

I mean I imagine it makes sense back in our hunter gatherer days.

Kara making her own thread won't solve that.

Trying to get this back on-topic and on a much less serious topic, has anybody noticed that in games that feature character customisation or allow you to create your own often features more options for female characters than male ones? With the exception of facial hair, obviously. Female-only clothing options tend to be more prevalent in RPGs too.

[up][up]Perhaps, but it's not a very useful assumption to make. "Well, we can't help it" tends to lead to "So there's no point in trying to change it."

In what sense? I'm not familiar with many games that have customizable avatars. Do mean that there are more different body types, hairstyles, etc. available for female sprites than male ones? I think a lot of that is down to audience acceptance. I used to play Virtual Magic Kindom, a fairly unremarkable MMORPG based on the Disney Theme Parks, and it had that going on—female sprites could wear anything, but male sprites could not wear skirts or dresses. I can pretty much guarantee you, this was to prevent parental outrage. Boys/men wearing "feminine clothing" or hairstyles is still considered transgressive in a way that girls/women wearing pants or having short hair is not.

Its why I almost always make female characters in MM Os and RP Gs.

They are much more fun to customize and usually have cooler clothing options.

Men Are Strong, Women Are Pretty.

I hate it when customizations do that, too.

Guild Wars 2 can let you make some enfemminite men and the Norn can reach Amazoness territory.

And then there's Dragon's Dogma and Demon Souls. You could pretty much go wild with them.

From last page:

Why is that an issue?

Because women can never be portrayed as such?

So do you want the trope to happen or not?

Arguing with moderation is Too Dumb to Live? I have argued with moderation more than once here, it has even gotten me edit banned once. It also is the reason the forums have pages.

edit:But for the sake of it, I think there was some ruckus raised when Legends Of Wrestlemania and the Parallel Smackdown vs Raw game removed the ability to dress men in women's clothing, meaning several Gorgeous George characters, among others like the flying nuns, were pretty much impossible to depict, I guess reversing the previous limit to women C-A-W choices in the Smackdown-Raw-DOR era.

I get censor ship issues, if someone's crotch can be covered by something but another's cannot it makes sense not to let men wear it, or at least to give them a bigger version, but Day Of Reckoning generally took the bigger approach despite what it lacked(it was a better day for a man C-A-W). Currently, I have no idea what WWE 13 is doing and All Stars Has No Women.
