The in character version: My fellow revolutionaries! Too long have work names languished in potholes, making searching impossible! The first instance of a work name when it is listed as an example of a trope should not be locked behind a pothole that only makes sense to people familiar with the series! I'm making it my life's mission to free all of those so falsely imprisoned! Now who's with me?
The boring version: When you Entry Pimp a work name on a trope page, please leave the work name un-potholed, and if you come across any such potholes, please free the work name from said pothole. This makes the wiki less confusing overall for everybody.
Here's an example of how to liberate works names. On the page Absent-Minded Professor, Professor Oak was once listed as an example with nothing but:
It's since been changed to:
- Pokémon Red and Blue's Professor Oak is so absent-minded he doesn't remember his own grandson's name, leaving it up to the player to remind him.
(Of course, you don't have to be fancy when you liberate a pothole, but sometimes a little bit of elaboration is helpful.)
Until the wiki as a whole decides to adopt this as a matter of course, please be a roaming works name liberator like I am. (Current project: Liberating Punctuated! For! Emphasis!.)
FWIW, with my various rename/namespacing efforts, when I see those hidden work wicks I usually do reveal them, even if not directly connected to the focus du jour of my editing efforts. I forget where the page on the issue is, off the top of my head, but that is in the official policy guidelines.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpYou want some real work? Morally Ambiguous Doctorate is plagued by this. Are there any brave souls to make the move?
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerUnfortunately, spot-cleaning is all I'm open for at the moment. I still have another 500 ATLA wicks to move (minus some archive stuff), my plate's pretty full at the moment.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpFixed. And now I am really going to cheer once the expanded Natterfy comes in to use.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIf you're going down a list of examples checking the work names, it would be nice if you could also keep an eye out for and correct work names which aren't Wiki Words. All work names (with the exception of those cut by the P5) are supposed to be Wiki Worded.
Most Annoying Sound is another page plagued with potholes.
Really, even those with no article?
Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.I don't think it was ever formally decided.
"Polite life will fill you full of cancer." - Iggy Pop "I've seen the future, brother, it is murder." -Leonard CohenYes, even redlinked works, for two reasons: first, someone may see the redlink and make the page; second, if (when) the page is made, the redlinks will automagically become blue, giving the new page a whole raft of wicks right off the bat. There's no easy way to search for non-wiki-worded works names on trope pages.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Yes, even for ones that don't have pages. The idea is that the redlink will encourage someone to start the page; plus, if a page ever is created (even if not from the redlink), the links will already be in place, both giving the page creator some ready-done tropes to crosswick and preventing the necessity of having to comb through the wiki trying to find pages where the work is mentioned to bluelink the title.
EDIT: Ninja'd by the mod. Oh well. Have the information twice.

It's rather comforting that we both said the same thing.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Sorry, should have been more clear, I meant with respect to P5-cut works.
"Polite life will fill you full of cancer." - Iggy Pop "I've seen the future, brother, it is murder." -Leonard CohenFirst, I want to say that I approve this effort. I try to fix these sorts of potholes when I spot 'em, but sometimes they slip past me. The more eyes, the merrier.
Second, a reminder: if you're going to redlink works for which we don't have a page, please use namespaces! The only time you should leave out the namespace is if the page exists and hasn't yet been moved (and even then, it's better to go ahead and move it, if you have time).
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.I give up on Most Annoying Sound. First my browser crashed, then I accidentally reloaded the page mid-edit.
Some other brave soul will have to tackle it.
No worries. I've got it taken care of. You can relax now.
@OP: fully agreed. I try to fix these potholes whenever I come across them.
It does not matter who I am. What matters is, who will you become? - motto of Omsk BirdQuestion: I've been doing a lot of work on moving around band namespaces, and sometimes, things like this happen:
- Pete Wentz xxxxx.
Is this still an acceptable pot-hole? Or should I rewrite things like:
- Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz xxxxx.

I wouldn't do it. Still needs a hover to find out where it comes from.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAwesome. I have a project to take me into the end of the year! XD
I tend to frown upon these kinds of wicks.
While I've been on wick migration efforts, I've seen wicks like [[DeusEx Warren Spector]], [[SouthPark Isaac Hayes]] and [[MontyPython Eric Idle]]. The works tend to be the ones the respective people are known for, doesn't mean that it refers specifically to a work, particularly if an entry refers to something else entirely. I'd say if you come across such a thing, remove the reference/wick to a work.

I now go by Graf von Tirol. The main thing about that is just that if the link is relevant to the example and the linked words.
A character or actor can accurately be linked to many things, but it doesn't necessarily make sense in context. For instance, linking a character to tsundere might be a good idea if it's about a love and/or denial trope, but if the example is on the Action Girl page it wouldn't fit. On that page, maybe a weapon trope or something would be better, as it would give a hint about what sort of Action Girl it is, without necessarily having to clarify it in the example text.
Check out my fanfiction!^^ Potholing to the other works of people (that is, in an example for Work A, a pothole is made to Work B, which involved the same person) is also sinkholing, as I understand it, so they're subject to removal anyway.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpThought occurred to me. For works pages of a series with multiple individual works (like, say, Honor Harrington), is there a problem with having the series wick as a potholed with the individual work's title displayed?
Using the HH example, to make clear what I mean, like this: On Basilisk Station
All your safe space are belong to TrumpIt's still the name of the work. For singular episodes, less so, though.
